Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to the following with 80% accuracy:
A. Define claim orally in 2-3 sentences through the given context,
B. determine orally whether or not the given examples are considered as claims
of fact,
C. give 5 examples of claims of fact on a ¼ sheet of paper;
D. demonstrate creatively the importance of claim of fact by providing real-world
scenario,
E. formulate claims of fact in a ½ sheet of paper out from the given social issue.

The teacher will divide group the class into five.

The teacher will distribute the illustration board to each group.

The teacher will give statements and the students will be given 5 seconds to answer if it is a
Fact or Bluff.

1. Presentation/ Discussion

What is a Claim?

 The word claim comes from the Latin word clamare, which means “to cry out, shout.”
 In literature, a claim is a statement that asserts something to be true and can either be a
fact or a judgment.
 According to del Gandio J. (2008), a claim is an arguable statement- an idea that a rhetor
(that is, a speaker or writer) asks the audience to accept or an anticipation that they
should agree with it.
 It persuades, argues, convinces, proves or provocatively suggests something to a reader
who may or may not initially agree with you.
 It can be classified into three types (3); Fact, Value and Policy.

Characteristics of a good claim:


 argumentative and debatable
 specific and focused
 interesting and engaging
 logical

Here are three different examples of claim:


1. Covid-19 is deadly.
2.Covid-19 and flu spread in similar ways.
3. You will have Covid-19 if you have low body resistance.
4. You should wear face mask and face shield.
5. Tawa-tawa is the cure for Covid-19.

What is Claim of Fact?

 It asserts that a condition existed, exist, or will exist and are based on facts or data.
 It is something that can be determined by careful observation of past,
present, or future.
 A claim whether something is true or untrue but there must always be potential
controversial, conflict, or change.
 It can be proven or disproved with the help of factual evidence
 Argument usually turns on strength of evidence presented as reason for arguer’s belief
in the claim.
 It must be proven absolutely true and the statement gives room for discussion.

Here are examples of claim of fact:


1. The home quarantine did not lower the number of COVID-19 infected
individuals.
2. Washing of hands is the most effective measure to prevent getting
infected from the virus.
3. Covid-19 and flu spread in similar ways.

2. Activity

The teacher will give statements and let the students determine if It is a claim of fact or
not.
a) Video games lead to the increased of violence among teens.
b) We should wash our hands to prevent diseases.
c) Climate change is exacerbated by people.
d) Oil prices will continue to rise.
e) Tuition at community colleges will be increased next year.

3. Analysis

The teacher will let the students watch a video about Cyberbullying.

(The students will write 5 claims of fact from the video they watch on a ¼ sheet of paper.)

4. Abstraction

Task: Signal your Claims!


The teacher will give statements and students will use their hand to make a “like” sign if it the
statement is a claim of fact, if it is not, they will execute “dislike” sign.

1. Schools must provide equitable and quality internet access to students in the
implementation of online classes.
2. The 20% of Americans believe that the U.S has never landed on the moon.
3. Iphone is better than Realme.
4. The home quarantine did not lower the number of COVID-19 infected individuals.
5. The death penalty does not deter crime.

The teacher will group the class into 5.
