Digital Citizenship Collaboration-Plagiarism and Citation

Workshop Description:
Workshop Title: Giving credit where credit is due
Curriculum Level: Digital Citizenship
Grade Level: 6th-8th grade
Time Frame: 2 hours

Stage One: Identify Desired Results

The following ISTE Standards will be addressed during this workshop:

2. Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and
working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal
and ethical.
b. Students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the
permanence of their actions in the digital world.

Workshop objective:

1. Understand why you cite sources


2. Understand when citations are needed in an assignment

Understandings

Participants will understand that:


1. You cannot take other peoples work without giving them credit
2. You cannot change a few words or sentences on an assessment and call it their own

Essential Questions:

1. How do you avoid plagiarism?


2. When do you give credit?
3. How to you give credit
Knowledge and Skills

Participants will know:

1. What plagiarism is.


2. What happens when you plagiarize

Students will be able to:


1. Identify plagiarism when they see it.
2. Give credit where its due in order to avoid plagiarism

Stage Two: Evidence

Performance Task

Learners will have to show their knowledge of citing sources through the successful completion
of the module one. They will be required to show when citation is needed and where it is not
needed. Students will need to understand the legality behind citing your sources.

During the workshop, participants will:


1. Explain when it is necessary for an individual to cite their sources (explain)
2. Discuss why it is legally important to cite you sources (Perspective)
3. Explain the reason for using cited works (explain)

Evidence of Performance Task


1. Learners will answer padlet question showing their understanding of plagiarism
2. Learners will answer google forms explain:
a. Their understanding of when and when not to use citation
b. Identify within the text situations in which citation is required
Stage Three: Plan Learning Experience ( 3 days, 40 minutes each)

1. Explain and guide students through video presentations


2. Facilitate class discussions about plagiarism and when to cite

Day One:

1. Discuss with students the purpose of the module


a. I Do (script): lately we have been requiring you all to start giving sources when
we ask you to write research paper. The reason is that we want to ensure that you
are using sources that are reliable so that you are learning the right information.
The second reason is that we want to ensure that we given credit to the individuals
that we got our information from. We dont given credit to those people its called
plagiarism. Through our unit you all are going to learn what plagiarism is, and
make sure that you do not do it? On your website, I want for you all to put your
headphones on and watch the video on the first module.
2. Students review the video
a. They Do Alone: Watch the video of what plagiarism is
3. Discussion over key topics on the video
a. I Do (script): Now that we understand what plagiarism to discus with you elbow
partner what plagiarism
b. They Do Together: Discuss plagiarism with their partner
c. We Do Together: Class discussion on what they noticed about the video, and what
they discussed with their plagiarism
4. Assessment
a. They Do Alone: students will now answer to padlet question of What is
plagiarism? (checking for understanding)

Day Two
1. Discuss with students the purpose of todays module
a. I Do: Yesterday we discuss the Plagiarism. The main reason was to ensure that we
give credit to our sources when needed. However, now we need to find out when
it is needed. Is it all the time? Or is it some of the time? At this, I want you to put
your headphones on and watch the video under module two

2. Understanding Citation
a. They Do alone: Students will watch video on citation.
3. Discussing Citation:
a. They Do Together: Now I want you to turn to your elbow partner and discuss
what you learned, and found interest in the video.
b. We Do: As a class we will discuss the questions of: When do you cite your
sources? Why do you cite your sources? (check for any misconceptions)

4. Assessment: Students will complete assessment on citing

5. Encourage students to review of videos tomorrow in preparation for their test on citation.
(Analyze students assessments from lesson1 & 2. Use information to suggest which
videos students should focus on)

Day Three
1. Explain the purpose for the day:
a. I Do (script): Alright class, over the past two days we have been discussing
plagiarism, the reason for citations, how to cite, and the proper times to cite.
Today I want to you to show me what you have learned over the course of this
unit. You will be given the whole class period to take your assessment so take
your time. (extended time accommodation).

2. Final Assessment
a. Students will be given the full class time (35 minutes)

3. Use the data from the assessments to determine if the learners have mastered the
standards for the unit.
4. Encourage students to review the curated list of tools on citations and plagiarism,
specifically students that did not do well on the module
