Lesson Plan for Digital Literature

Grade Level: 4
Length of lesson: 4 days; 30-50 minutes each day

3b- Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of
information, media, data or other resources.

Lesson 1
Grade Level 4

Warm up:
1. Students will answer the question on the nearpod: Who are some people in your life that
you consider trustworthy and honest?
a. After they answer the question, we will discuss why they chose the people they
did and share out some answers from the students.
2. “We will create a rubric to determine if a person is trustworthy or not.” On the next
nearpod slide they will write down one way a person could be considered trustworthy.
a. Some think abouts for them are:
i. Why is a doctor trustworthy?
ii. Why are teachers trustworthy?

3. Put the rubric together on a google document so the kids can see what they created.
4. “We want to see if websites are credible. What do you think credible means based on
what we have talked about so far?”
a. Credible means to be able to be believed. But not everything is credible.
5. Could we use the rubric we created earlier to help us?
a. Hopefully the answer is yes or you can use some parts of the rubric at least!
Exit “Ticket”: On the last nearpod slide, circle 3 synonyms for the word credible.

Lesson 2: (1 hour)
Grade Level 4

Warm up:
1. Revisit the rubric created the day before and review what was discussed yesterday.
2. Answer the poll about who is the most credible. PollEv.com/madisonnitti602
a. A doctor
b. A politician
c. Your parents
d. A teacher
e. A salesman
Content:
3. Introduce the 5 W’s to help the students add to the rubric. (Who, what, when, where,
why)- watch a short video and the students will fill in on their resource what each W
represents. After the video review the answers and information the students gathered.
b. Who: who wrote the article, what are their credentials, are you able to contact the
author
c. What: What does the URL tell you?
i. .com=commercial
ii. .net=network
iii. .edu=education
iv. .k12.(state).us
v. .gov=government
vi. .mil=military
vii. .org=nonprofit organization
viii. what is the author’s purpose (persuade, entertain, inform) be careful that
the author is stating facts not opinions
d. When: when was the information published on the site. The more recent the
better.
e. Where: where does the information come from? Look for works cited and
hyperlinks.
f. Why: Why is the information useful for your research?
6. We will look the tree octopus site together and determine if it a credible source using the
rubric and 5 W’s. Together, we will complete the chart so the students can then
complete it on their own.

7. The students will look at two different websites in pairs. One is for Club Pet Resorts and
the other is Dog Island. The students will use the 5 W’s and rubric created in order to determine
which website is credible and which is a hoax.
a. Mention to the students what the word hoax means.

2. They will complete the charts on the google slides that have their names on them.
Closing:
We will look at each other’s google slides as a class and determine which was the real website.

Lesson 3: (45 minutes)


Warm up:
1. Introduce the following assignment:
a. The students will be researching an explorer and determining why the explorer
took the risks they did to explore new land.
2. The students will be able to use the following websites:
a. http://www.ducksters.com/
b. https://www.allaboutexplorers.com/explorers/
c. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_explorers
d. http://famous-explorers.org/
e. They may also use books from the library to help them research.
3. Remind the students to be sure the sites are credible and select the most credible one
before they begin researching.
4. Use the rubric and within the websites find the following information:
a. Where are the explorers from?
b. What did they have to explore and why?
c. What did they have to gain from their exploration?
d. Why do you think they were motivated to complete their exploration?
5. The students will create a google slide to compile the information they find.
Content:
1. The students will have 35 minutes to work on identifying the most credible source and
finding the information.
Closing:
1. Write down one website you decided was most credible.

Lesson 4: (45 minutes)


Warm-up:
1. Review the guidelines for the assignment.
Content:
2. The students will have 20 minutes to complete their assignment. By the end of the 20
minutes they should have the slide completed and the most credible website identified.
3. Discuss the websites they were able to use to help them with their assignment.
a. Which ones did they find the most credible and why?
b. What made them use one website more than the other?
Closing:
1. We will present our slides to the class with the information found.
