Assignment 1

Communication Theory
EC5.203 - Spring 2022

Date: 18 Jan 2022 Deadline: 25 Jan 2022

Topics: Class 1 - 5 Marks: 50 (10 each)
Instructions:
• Clearly state the assumptions made (if any) that are not specified in the question.
• For analytical problems, write your answers on A4 sheets and scan them in pdf format. Submit pdf file
(named as ‘Rollnumber Assignment1’) through Moodle by the submission deadline.
• For simulation problems, please write the codes in Matlab. In addition to codes, provide a report
(in pdf format) including the analytical description (if any) and clearly depicting the generated plots
with appropriate labels. Ensure that the simulation setup and parameters are clearly mentioned in the
report. Submit a zipped folder (named as ‘Rollnumber Assignment1’) containing the both repot and
codes through Moodle by the submission deadline.
• Please do not copy from your peers or online. Copied assignments will fetch zero marks.

1. Find the Fourier Transform of the following signals. Prioritize using properties of Fourier Transform for
solving.
(a) (A + M cos (ωm t + ϕ)) sin (ωc t)
(b) sinc3 (t)
(c) tsinc(t)
(d) t exp(−αt) cos (βt)u(t)
R∞
(e) 0 exp(−αt)sinc2 (t) dt
R∞
(f) 0 exp(−αt) cos (βt) dt
2. Find the energies of the signals shown in Fig. 1. Comment on the effect on energy of sign change, time
shifting or doubling of the signal. What is the effect on the energy if the signal is multiplied by k?

2t + 2 −1 ≤ t ≤ −0.5

3. Consider the trapezoid signal s(t) = 1 −0.5 ≤ t ≤ 0.5

2 − 2t 0.5 ≤ t ≤ 1

(a) Find and sketch the Fourier transform S(f).
(b) Compute the 99% energy containment bandwidth in kHz, assuming that the unit of time is millisec-
onds.
4. Consider( the signal
e−at t ≥ 0
x(t) =
0 otherwise
What is the bandwidth required to transmit 95% of the signal?
Hint: It will be a function of ’a’.

5. (a) Prove that cos nω0 t and cos mω0 t are orthogonal for all m ̸= n.
(b) Prove that sin nω0 t and cos mω0 t are orthogonal for all m and n.
(c) Prove that < x(t), x∗ (t) > is the energy of signal x(t)
(d) Find the power of x(t) = cos(nω0 t) + sin(nω0 t) using the result shown in part (b)
