Artist Statement

-Sophie the Hamster

I used many mediums to make my artworks. Some of these were clay, paint, pencil, papier-

mâché and cardboard, and online art. The medium I liked working with the best was papier-

mâché and cardboard. I liked to assemble it and add the papier-mâché. I also think that in the

end, these sculptures looked the coolest.

To come up with ideas I usually think of things in my everyday life. I like to choose things that

are important to me. I love my cat, so I include lots of cats in my artworks. I also like gardening,

animals, and nature, so I add these things, too. Sometimes I also get inspired by books and

movies. I plan things by drawing in my sketchbook or on a piece of paper. I plan what I will use

to make it, what colors it will be, and what textures it will have.

I find that lots of my artworks are funny and friendly. I like to include positive messages in my

pieces like, “Realize the good things in your life,” and, “You only have one life, so have fun.”

All the themes I chose were similar. The “Fishy” painting and the catfish very both fun and

pleasing. I portray the message by using bright colors and including animals. Only a few of my

pieces were serious. The Idea Art piece and my Mixed Media Piece were more on the serious

side. I like to make artworks that make you happy and some that inform you of things.
At the beginning of the semester, I didn’t like art. I didn’t think of myself as a good artist at all. I

never made any art. Throughout the semester I realized that I have good ideas and that I can

make art that I enjoy. Learning new things was exciting for me this year. I learned about how to

make clay sculptures, how to draw one-point-perspective, and about the several types of colors.

After doing so much art I feel that the skill I most improved was drawing. I am defiantly not a

professional, but I am now more confident about my artistic skills.
