Spoken vs. Written Language

OVERVIEW:

In early times, there was no writing, and people exchanged information only by
speaking. Through the historical stages of development, the writing system was shaped.
Nowadays, writing is an indispensable means of communication for people in life as well as
work. Parallel to writing, speaking has also become more adequate and perfect day by day. As a
result, research
into spoken and written language in English, the global language, has been properly addressed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After completing this module, you should be able to:

1. Differentiate Spoken and Written Language


2. Evaluate some differences between spoken and written grammar in English

Spoken Language
Oral language is typically associated by linguists with conversation that is
produced, processed, and then evaluated in the context of face-to-face exchange
and grounded in interpersonal relationships that are often clearly established.
Oral language is adapted to a specific audience and to socio-cultural settings and
communities that are presumably present, functioning in a context of here and

now.
Written Language

Written language is typically associated with language of books and explanatory


prose such as is found in schools. Written language is formal, academic, and
planned; it hinges on the past and is reconstructed in such a way that in the future
it can be processed by varied readerships

Both spoken and written discourse are two indispensable facets of


language in general, and of English in particular. Although there are considerable
differences between speaking and writing in terms of grammar, they are always
interdependent of each other. Furthermore, the English grammar taught at
school should be balance of both spoken and written language in order to
provide learners comprehensive and clear understandings about the similarities
as well as differences of spoken and written English.

Story-based Approach

OVERVIEW:

To learn a second language using stories can be one more tool to reach the curriculum
goals. Stories can be used to arouse interest and increase motivation among students who are
learning a second language.

Story-based Approach
Story-based Learning is an innovative training tool that is as old as it is new and everyone,
including adults, love its immersive aspect. Stories have been woven into our lives in the form
of: fables, bedtime stories; gripping novels; etch.

Why Tell Stories?


- Learners must see the relevance of something in order to feel persuaded to learn about it.
- Explaining concepts in the context of a story that leaners can relate to is crucial to the
learning process.
- By helping learners integrate knowledge into their mental models in meaningful ways, the
realistic context of a story makes information easier to remember.
- Most of us intuitively know it is easier to remember the gist of a story and its lessons
compared to a list of miscellaneous facts.

How to write a story?


Think of:
- Setting
- Event (problem)
- Development (Action and Consequences)
- Climax (Lesson Learned or Problem Solved)
- Ending

The added element of interactivity helps the learner make decisions that control the
movement of the story, as it were. The story was able to successfully transport the learners
into authentic settings and into the lives of interesting, believable characters. The visual
imagery and the audio helped bring the learning content to life and achieve interactivity in the
true sense of the word. The effect will be better learning and improved performance.

When following a story-based approach, unit topics must be meaningful, at this


approach provides students with a link between their experiences and interest and the English
Language. Using stories as a point of departure from traditional units is an appealing way for
tackling topics, learning vocabulary and grammar and engaging in activities using a more
interactive manner than those implemented by simply following the course book.
