ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

 COURSE DESCRIPTION

Engineering Management is a specialized form of management that is


required to successfully lead engineering or technical personnel and projects.
The term can be used to describe either functional management or project
management.
Engineering managers typically require training and experience in both
general management and the specific engineering disciplines that will be used
by the engineering team to be managed.
The successful engineering manager must have the skills necessary to
coach, mentor and motivate technical professionals; skills which are often very
different from those required the effectively manage individuals in other fields.
This course that deals with the basic principles of engineering
management and organization. It attempts to facilitate understanding of the
managerial roles in a complex, contemporary and global economy. The course
also focuses on the different managerial functions with practical insights and
applications, primarily as these theories are being applied in the Mechanical
Engineering profession. A portion of Business Enterprise discussion will also be
discussed to assess the “entrepreneurial’ side of students as future
managers/leaders. At the end of the course, students will be more enlightened
as “what managers actually do” in their daily tasks.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students should have been able to have:

1. Acquire basic knowledge and understanding of the concepts of engineering


management and organization and apply the functions and roles of engineer
managers/leaders in and out of the campus.
2. Solve and analyze management case problems by using decision-making
tools/techniques.
3. Analyze and apply the different general management skills that are to be
needed as future engineer managers including the ability to plan, organize,
control, deal with ambiguity, lead, and communicate effectively.
4. Apply the principles of engineering management to analyze case studies.

 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Classworks:
1. Classworks (assignments/quizzes/exams) are posted through Google
Classroom.
2. Classworks should be accomplished regardless if it is submitted late or
not for the sake of those with limited internet connection.
3. Classworks will be provided to students who do not have the means to
access online and shall likewise submit a hard copy of their classworks.

Test/Quiz Policy:
1. At least two quizzes will be given for each period.
2. Make-up tests (midterm and final tests) may be given but there will be
no make-up quizzes.

The computation of Final grade is presented below:


Midterm Grade = 0.60 (Class Standing) + 0.40 (Midterm Test)
Class Standing = (45% of Quizzes) + (15% Assignments)
Final Term Grade = 0.60 (Class Standing) + 0.40 (Midterm Test)
Class Standing = (45% of Quizzes) + (15% Assignments)
Final Grade = 40% of Midterm Grade + 60% of Final Term Grade
