THE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY DEPENDENCE ON SCHOOL

PERFORMANCE AMONG THE SELECTED GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF

ST. JOSEPH COLLEGE OF NOVALICHES, INCORPORATED AY

2020-2021

As our world changes over time, there is no doubt that technological

progress has indeed improved culture. Mobile phones and other

gadgets have become so ubiquitous in everyday life that many people

depend on them for everything. The internet is linked to

communication with loved ones, financial management, social media,

and GPS instructions, making access more important than ever. Any of

this leads to dependency on technology or dependence on technology.

The use of technology clashed with the students' everyday lives, but

Nicki Dowling, a clinical psychologist, thinks it might be too much to

mark it as addiction. Ms. Dowling continues to refer to it as "Internet

Dependency." There is a need for this field of study to be expanded

and for people to be aware of it by analyzing and investigating the

technologies that may affect the student's results. As a result,

everybody will be conscious of its impacts.

7 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

This study aims: 1.) What is the impact of technology dependency to

those less fortunate at the selected student? 2.) What is the impact of

technology dependency in the school performance to the selected

students?

The researchers used the case study in conducting the study. The

researchers purposively chose 30 respondents who are 11th graders

currently studying at St. Joseph College of Novaliches Inc.

According to the findings of this report, most students rely on

technology for education and information. It has also been shown to

help students improve their grades, and they both prefer using

technology and handbooks for their schoolwork.

The researchers recommend the students who struggle with their

devices and who are not satisfied with it, seek help from their friends

and parents, because in this time of pandemic, helping is a must,

especially learning online is not as easy unlike learning from the actual

class. Also, we recommend the parents to actively encourage their

children and find time to ask them if they are doing well with their

academics because not all students can comfortably cope with this

form of online-based learning.

The main objective of this study is to determine the impacts of

technology dependence on school performance among the selected

Grade 11 students of SJCNI.

CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As our world develops through the years, there is no question

that technology’s advancement has also enriched society. However,

this growth can also cost issues and disadvantages and perhaps has a

darker side ,especially for the younger generation. Some may become

concerned that people are losing essential aspects of human

experience as they are becoming more and more technologically

linked. Regardless of age, gender, economic status and other factors,

most individuals are smartphone/mobile phone users.

Currently, the term most often used to refer to mobile phones

are both smartphones (handheld computers that can run software like

a computer) and feature phones (which are used only to communicate

via audio and sometimes text). The use of mobile devices is now very

widespread; many people can access the internet and/or phone service

only through such devices (International Telecommunication Union,

2012).

10 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

  According to Statista.com, in 2017, around 42.06% owns a

smartphone, and by the year 2020, around 63.6% of the population of

the Philippines owns and uses a smartphone. By 2025, it is expected

that 77.1% of the entire population would be using smartphones. “In

modern life, mobile phones and other devices have become so

fundamental that many depend on them for everything. The internet is

connected to contact with loved ones, financial management, social

media, and GPS directions, making connectivity more essential than

ever before. All of this leads to reliance on technology or technology

dependence.

In 2010, The New York Times covered the topic of Technology

Dependence and the reporter interviewed Dr. Elias Aboujaoude,

director of the Impulse Control Disorders Clinic at Stanford. “We’re

paying a price in terms of our cognitive life because of this virtual

lifestyle”. People tend to spend a lot of time with their devices, and

studies indicated that dependency on mobile phones and technology is

linked to addiction. The use of technology interfered with the daily

lives of the students, but according to Nicki Dowling, a clinical

11 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

psychologist, it may be too far to label it as addiction. Ms. Dowling

prefers to call it “Internet dependence”.

There is a need for this area of research to have its boundaries

extended, and to let people know about this topic by examining and

exploring the technology that may impact the student’s performance.

With that, everyone will be aware of its impacts.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to recognize the impacts of technology on

students. Its objective is to answer the following questions:

1. What is the impact of technology dependency to those less

fortunate at the selected student?

2. What is the impact of technology dependency in the school

performance to the selected students?

12 | Page

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will focus on the impact of technology dependence on

school performance among the selected Grade 11 students of St.

Joseph College of Novaliches, Incorporated. The research is conducted

to have thorough knowledge about the benefits or problems of the

students on why they depend too much on technology for their school

purposes and if it impacts the quality of education between students

and teachers of the school. We limit our respondents to selected 30

grade 11 students of St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Incorporated.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Since the pandemic started, classes are being conducted online

thus lead to some students’ technology dependence. Students use

technology to communicate with teachers during classes. The study

will perceive the impacts of “technology dependence” on school

performance among Grade 11 students. Furthermore, this study will

be helpful to the following groups:

13 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

Students

- This study will inform the students on how technology impacts their

school performance. This study will also help them identify the things

that he/she should know for the student to be aware of his/her school

performance.

Teachers

-The conclusions of this study will help the teachers adequately

educate students about the proper use of technology and its

limitations. It will give the teachers knowledge if a student can

perform better with the help of technology.

Future Researchers

- This study will be used as a future reference for prospective

researchers who will perform a research approach close to this study.

Future researchers may use the key topics in this study to achieve a

broader understanding of technology dependency.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Technology - refers to the usage and knowledge of tools, machines,

techniques, and systems to solve a problem, achieve a goal or perform

a specific function.

Dependence - being abnormally tolerant of and dependent on

something that is mentally or physically habit-forming.

Technology Dependence - it refers to the short-term or long-term

reliance on machines and technologies to determine, satisfy, or settle

problems.

School Performance - is a measure of a student's accomplishment

through recitations, cooperation, participation or interactions

Less Fortunate - students with old devices and students that

experience lag and delay on their devices

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review of related foreign and local

literature and studies particularly those with direct bearing to the

present study.

Literature broadly is any collection of written work, but it is also used

more narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art form,

especially prose fiction, drama, and poetry.

FOREIGN

  Raja, R. & P. C. Nagasubramani, (2018) As students prefer to

learn by the means of technology in our modern world and how it

impacts their learning ability, it was revealed that the use of modern

equipment and tools and interactivity of the students increase. They

also claim that it is much more interactive and fuller of interesting

ideas when it is aided by technology. The learning process becomes

easy and convenient, as well as effective. This means our minds tend

to work faster when assisted with the use of modern technology,

talking about education. The reliance and dependence of such

16 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

technology, makes life an easy, smooth journey and is completely

unavoidable these days especially in schools, universities and colleges.

Flanagan, J. L. (2018). Number of technologies has begun to

emerge in support of enhancing how students learn in schools. These

technologies, however, are not used to replace traditional teaching

methods, but instead used as methods to enhance student learning.

Technology is the technical means people use to improve their

surroundings and the use of it. Classrooms around the world have

applied various forms of technology to enhance student interest in

learning. Student achievement, engagement and interest had risen

and grades on the assessments had also increased due to the

presence of technology.

Study is the act of learning and spending time discovering

information or an academic work or investigation about a particular

thing or subject area.

17 | Page

FOREIGN

Harris, J. L. (2016). School officials and administrators have

tried sorts of remedies to promote student engagement and

achievement in the classrooms and this included the implementation of

technology into curricula. The United States Department of Education

(2002), the “No Child Left Behind Act” pursued to get rid of the digital

divide and to have student technologically educated by the end of the

grade level. Technology is such an asset to any school or classroom.

The use of technology allows teachers to fully differentiate and tailor

instruction to meet the needs of their students.

LOCAL

According to philstar.com (2014) there have been several

improvements in how students nowadays are getting their education.

These improvements, which have been noted by teachers and school

administrators, include the following:

18 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

Independence and information gathering

By connecting to the Internet, students learn how to do their

research. The wealth of information available on the Web plus the ease

of using search engines give students more independence and

confidence, as well as increased skill, when it comes to finding relevant

data and putting these data together to meet a learning requirement

or goal.

Critical thinking and reflection

With the large volume of information that they access, students

are induced to learn to think critically: Which information inaccurate?

Is this information useful to the homework or subject at hand? Is this

information validated by multiple sources and by the latest research

findings? Students learn not to simply accept any data, no matter how

readily available. With the guidance of their teacher, they can practice

critical thought.

19 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

Communication and collaboration

Through the exchange of ideas and messages—either by e-mail,

chat, or even social media— students are able to collaborate with each

other to test their understanding of lessons. They can more easily ask

questions to one another and provide answers and share research.

As a rule in the school of Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez

Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST), they recommend

the student’s study habit should have at least three hours and one and

a half hour out of class for every hour spent in class and Technology

(EARIST) also suggests that distracting noise should be minimized

however they said that there are some people need sound and some

like silence.

CHAPTER 3

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter represents the research methods and specific

procedures for gathering and analyzing data. The primary components

of this chapter will include the research design, the methodology that

will be applied in the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The main objective of this research is to learn about it and collect

data on the Impacts of Technology Dependence on School

Performance among Grade 11 Students. A case study is a

comprehensive study of a particular topic, such as an individual,

community, place, or phenomenon. Case studies are useful for

assessing and perceiving various elements of the research problem.

The researchers claimed that this design, with the Grade 11 students

of St. Joseph College of Novaliches Incorporated, is the most

appropriate solution, not just because it has been used by a group of

experts, but also because it explains the purpose of the situation.

21 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

RESPONDENTS

The researchers will be utilizing the selected 30 Grade 11

students of St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Incorporated.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

Purposeful Sampling was employed in our study because we are

talking about the impact of technology dependence among grade 11

Students of St. Joseph College of Novaliches Incorporated where we

use the method of collecting data by surveying the student. We select

students to answer our survey to understand what are the impacts of

technology dependence among grade 11 students of St. Joseph

College of Novaliches Incorporated.

INSTRUMENT USED IN THE STUDY

In gathering the data, the respondents will be given a survey

that is related to the research topic. They will answer the topic via an

online survey to gather out the desired information from the

respondents' point of view.

22 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

CONSTRUCTION OF THE INSTRUMENT

Researches will provide set of questions to selected Grade 11

students in order to collect data and evaluate so that we can be able to

determine the impacts in their school performance when they depend

on technology as an instrument of learning.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

This chapter presents the summary of the data gathered

from the conducted survey.

1. The result of the survey indicated that most of the respondents are

currently using a laptop and/or a computer. More than half of the

respondents use a cellphone alongside their laptops or computers

this school year.

1.1 Most of the respondents answered the follow-up question

that they are satisfied with their device. Meanwhile, very

few respondents have answered that they are not satisfied.

They stated it was because they wanted better

specifications/specs, their device has an outdated processor,

and they had to use another gadget because their laptop

does not equip a camera and a microphone.

26 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

2. Out of 30 respondents, a scale of 4 out of 5 was the most voted by

13 respondents when asked how much they depend on technology

as a source of information. Followed by a scale of 5 that was voted

by 10 respondents. The rest voted for a scale of 3. Meanwhile,

there is one respondent who voted on a scale of 2.

3. More than half of the respondents answered yes that dependency

on technology can help improve a student’s grades. Others

answered no.

4. Most of the respondents voted yes as an answer to agreeing that

the student’s technology dependence might cause a bad influence

on their school performance and behavior. The rest voted no; they

do not agree.

5. More than half of the respondents answered that they feel

satisfaction when receiving their grades made with the help of

technology. Less than half of the respondents answered that they

do not feel satisfactied.

5.1 The follow-up question asks if they are confident of

receiving grades when it is purely done based on textbooks

and notes. Most of the respondents answered yes, the

others answered no.

27 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

6. Out of 30 respondents, 20 voted yes that they can do their tasks on

their own even without the technology. The remaining others voted

no.

7. Out of 30 respondents, 9 said they will depend on technology

because it’s easier to gain information and will manage or save

their time. 13 respondents said they rather use textbooks because

the information from books is accurate and correct. In addition, not

all information from the Internet is true and reliable. 8 said they are

going to use both to get more ideas and need technology since

nowadays we are in a pandemic, meanwhile, they also use

handbooks and take notes because it is traditional, and they are

fond of it.

28 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What is the impact of technology dependence to those less

fortunate at the selected students?

The grade 11 students of St. Joseph College of Novaliches Inc.

who do not have the same luxury or do not have full access to technologies,

internet connections and other factors as other students, tend to experience

less technology dependence. Hence, they make their school works without

the full use of the technology available to them. Aside from that, those less

fortunate students tend to be less attached to technology since it is not

always available to them.

2. What is the impact of technology dependence on the school

performance to the selected students?

The selected students who depend on technology as a means of

finishing their school works and tasks tend to be more involved in

technologies or devices available to them. Since they are more

involved, this may lead to certain circumstances in which they depend

on the technology around them to have a better school performance.

This reliance might cost them their independency resulting in students

being lazy to do their school works thinking they have the technology

always available around them to do the work.

CONCLUSION
29 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

Based on the summary of findings, the researchers formulated the

following conclusions:

1. The selected grade 11 students feel satisfied with their received

grades when it is purely done based on textbooks and notes.

2. The researchers conclude that most of the respondents said that

they depend on technology when it comes to source of

information and it improves the student’s school performance.

3. The respondents agreed that technology dependence might

cause a bad influence on their school performance and behavior.

RECOMMENDATION

30 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

The searchers made the following recommendations based on their

findings and the conclusions they took from them:

These recommendations are offered to the following population:

To the PARENTS, We recommend that you always check on your

children's school performance through their report card and take some

time and ask them whether they are really learning and if they need

help at least, especially in this time of the pandemic, they're just

learning through online platforms and not all of the students can easily

cope up with this kind of set up, so we recommend that you always

encourage and motivate them.

To the STUDENTS, since you are all using technology to study, we

suggest that you always evaluate yourself to see whether you are

gaining information or improving by online-based learning. We also

recommend that you continue to use the books that were provided to

you because not all of the details you need can be found on the

internet. Don't give up easily; you have goals to accomplish, so always

motivate yourself to achieve them, no matter how tough it is to study.

31 | Page
St. Joseph College of Novaliches, Inc.
Rainbow Village 5, Congressional Ave., Novaliches Caloocan City

To the FUTURE RESEARCHERS, we recommended that more analysis

should be conducted to learn more about the impacts of technology

dependency on students' school performance.
