The USA is the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada and China). Including the states
of Alaska and Hawaii, the US covers an area of 9 million square km. It borders on Canada in the North.
Besides, it is such a great nation that it covers 4 time zones. If we look at the map of the USA, we can see
lowlands and mountains. The center of the country is drained by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. The
Mississippi is one of the world is greatest rivers; it was known to American Indians as the “father of
waters”;. The USA is one of the greatest industrial nations in the world. The USA is the world leader in
many branches, for instance, biochemical and genetic engineering, aerospace research and development,
communications, computer and information services, and similar high-technology fields. The USA is also
the world is leading agricultural nation, which not only feeds her own people but many other people in the
world as well. The largest cities of the USA are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia,
Detroit, Houston, Baltimore and San Francisco. The United States is a federal union of 50 states, each of
which has its own government. The seat of the central (federal) government is Washington, DC. According
to the US Constitution the powers of the government are divided into 3 branches. The 1st branch is the
Congress. The Congress is a meeting of representatives from all states. The Congress is divided into two
parts, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Every state, no matter how large or small, sends two
people to the Senate. These people are called senators. There are one hundred senators in the Senate. A
senator is term is six years. Each state also sends people to the House of Representatives. They are called
congressmen or congresswomen. The number of congressmen from each state depends on the number of
people who live in the state. All in all there are 425 congressmen in the House of Representatives. A
representative is term is two years. The Constitution gives many powers to the Congress. One important
power of the Congress is the power to declare war. The 2nd branch of government is the President. He
carries out the laws that the Congress makes. The President signs bills and then they become law. The Vice
President and the members of the Cabinet help the President to make decisions. The US President is
Commander in Chief of the country's is armed forces. A person who wants to become President must
be at least 35 years old and must live in the United States for at least 14 years before becoming President.
The President's is term is four years and one can be President for one or two terms, but not longer.
The 3rd branch of government is the Supreme Court. It is made up of nine judges. They have to make sure
that the President and the Congress follow the Constitution. Americans are very proud of their
Constitution. It was written more than 200 years ago and it is still working. The Bill of Rights guarantees
individual liberties: freedom of speech, religion and so on. The flag of the USA is called "“Stars and
Stripes"”. In the USA the American flag is a very important Symbol of the country. There are two main
political parties in the USA: the Republican and the Democratic, though there's is hardly any
difference between their political lines. At first the USA consisted of only 13 states on the Atlantic coast of
America. Those were English colonies, but they fought against England and in 1776 became an independent
state. They won the victory and a new nation was born. As the time went on, settlers from all the countries
of Europe moved to the west until the nation reached from the Atlantic to the Pacific. One by one new
states were added to the first 13. Much land was taken from the Indians. Some of the territories were
bought from France in 1803, others were taken from Mexico. Alaska was bought from Russia in 1817. It
became the 49th state of the USA, in 1859. The same year in 1859 the territory of Hawaii was added to the
USA as the 50th state. The capital of the USA is Washington, in the District of Columbia. It is located on the
north bank of the Potomac River. The USA Congress has its seat in the Capitol, and the White House is the
residence of the President. It has many famous monuments: the Library of the Congress of the USA, the
Washington Monument, the Abraham Lincoln and others. Until 1800 the United States of America had five
"“capitals"” or meeting places of the Congress - Princeton, Annapolis, Trenton, New York and
Philadelphia. For various reasons, none of these cities offered an ideal seat of government for the new
nation. Southern states protested that they were all too far north. After the Constitution was adopted, the
establishment of a new city was considered President Washington pinpointed the exact location, and the
Congress passed a bill for a federal city and capital on July 17, 1790. The city of Washington was called just
"“The Federal City"”. It didn't gain its name until after the first president's is death.
The architect of the new city planned straight streets with trees on both sides, beautiful buildings, and
monuments. The buildings for the Congress of the United States and some other buildings were built on a
hill. These buildings were called the Capitol. Then the hill was renamed Capitol Hill. In 1800 President John
Adams, the second president, and other members of the government moved to the new city of Washington,
D.C. (District of Columbia). The city is divided into four sections: NW(north-west), NE, SW, and SE.
Numbered streets run north and south: First Street, Second Street … Lettered streets such as A-street, B-
street run east and west. Bear in mind that every section has an independent street system. If you're
looking for Third Street, you need to know what section of the city it is in. Washington is one of the most
beautiful and unusual cities in the United States. The Washington Monument, the tallest stone structure in
the USA, was opened to the public in 1888. It is called the "“Pencil"” because of its shape. The
Lincoln Memorial is in the west of the Washington Monument. It is designed like a Greek temple. The
dominant figure is the realistic figure of Abraham Lincoln seated in the centre of the open temple. The
Jefferson Memorial is worth seeing, too. It is situated south of the Washington monument near the
Potomac River. The Library of Congress contains millions of books and manuscripts. People are also
interested in churches and cathedrals. Thousands of tourists visit Washington every day. People from all
parts of the United States come to see their capital and the monuments to those who in past centuries
struggled for the independence of their country.
