The United States of America is a federation of 50 states.

Forty-eight of them are situated in the


southern part of North America – Alaska is in the northwest and Hawaii is and island in the Pacific
Ocean. The USA lie between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean, Alaska lies between the Pacific Ocean
and the Artic Ocean.The northern neighbour of the USA is Canada, to the west of Alaska there is
Russia and to the south of the USA lies Mexico. The USA covers an area of about 9,5 million square
kilometres, which is nearly the same as all of Europe.

The US ais the third largest country in the world in both size and population.

The central region is dominated by large plains. In the west are mountains and, in the southwest,
areas of desert. The lowest extreme is Death Valley in California. Mount McKinley in Alaska (6,194 m)
is the highest point in the US.

On the border with Canada there are five Great Lakes. Their names are Ontario, Superior, Erie, Huron
and Michigan. Between the lakes Ontario and Erie there are the Niagara Falls. Its a very popular
destination for tourists. The largest river is the Mississippi.

The weather varies from hot dry desert in the southwest to subtropical Hawaii to cold tundra in
Alaska.

The USA has one of the richest economies in the world. We can find almost all branches of industry
here. The main industries are manufacturing, steel, automobiles, machinery, clothing, electronics.
Agriculture also plays an imporant part in the economy. The main agricultural products are corn,
fruits and vegetables, cotton and tobacco. The USA is rich in coal, gold, copper and iron.

 Is one of Americas most visited cities. It is the seat of the federal government, Supreme Court
and the President of the US, there are lasko memorials to important figures and events
American history, superb museums and many other things to see. Most of the sites are
located on the National Mall, called the Mall, a boulevard between the Capitol and the
Washington Monument
 The Lincoln Memorial – honors Americas 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who was
president during the American Civil War, opposed slavery and was assassinated while
watching a play.
 The White House – is the symbol of the American presidency and the official residence and
workplace of the President of the US
 The Washington Monument – was built to honor the country’s first president, George
Washington. This 170 meter tall obelisk is the worlds tallest stone structure.
 The Capitol – is the political center of the US government, where the Senate and House of
Representatives meet to make the country’s laws.
 The Korean War Veterans Memorial – remembering those who served in the Korean War
(1950-1953)
 The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial – is the newest memorial on the Mall. It’s the first
memorial to honor and African-American and the only memorial on the Mall not dedicated
to a president or war. Dr. King led many non-violent protests against segregation and racial
inequality. At the age of 35 he became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr.
King was assassinated after giving a speech in Memphis in 1968.
 The Jefferson Memorial – is dedicated to the third president Thomas Jefferson who is known
for his contributions to the Declaration of Independence.
 The Smithsonian Institution – operates 19 museums and a zoo.
 The Washington National Cathedral - this limestone cathedral, where several past presidents
funerals have been held is the sixth largest cathedral in the world.

New York (New York) - It’s the most populated city in the US. You can find Brooklyn, Queens,
Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island in here. Almost 800 languages are spoken here. It was
originally named New Amsterdam. There are also the Empire State Building, Central Park and the
Statue of Liberty, greeting millions of immigrants coming to America.

Chicago (Illinois)- You can see the Willis Tower (Sear Tower), which was the world’s highest building
until 1998. It is also the city of jazz and blues clubs. It’s the third most populated city in the US. The
city is located near The Great Lakes.

Los Angeles (California) – This is the city of stars. It is known for Hollywood – it is the centre of the
American film industry. You can visit the Universal Studious, Disneyland and the Hollywood Walk of
Fame.

San Francisco (California) – the most famous landmark in this city is the Golden Gate Bridge, often
seen in movies. There is also the Alcatraz Island, one of the world most well-known prison

San José (California) – this city is best known as the heart of Silicon Valley, where are lots of tech
companies. There are headquarters of companies like Google and Apple

Los Vegas (Nevada) – This is the fastest growing city in the USA. It’s famous for its huge casinos,
which often look like top tourist attractions. For example, Luxor is in the shape of a huge pyramid. If
you want to have a quick wedding you can also go here, there are even drive-though chapels.

Seattle (Washington) – You can find the Space Needle – it is an observation tower built in the 1960s.
This city is also the home of Nirvana, a famous American band. It lies in the northwest of the USA.

Houston (Texas) – This city is the home of NASAs Space Center

Miami (Florida) – This city is found in the south. It is famous for its parties, beaches, and Cuban food.
There are many immigrants from Cuba.
