HSC (HIGH SPEED CRAFT)

Lesson I

Prof.  Igor  ZOTTI,  University  of  Trieste

1
HSC  DEFINITION
•  According  to  HSC  2000  code  of  SOLAS  (Safety
of  Life  at  Sea),  a  HSC  is  a  craE  having  a
maximum  speed  (m/s)  exceeding  3.7  ∇0.1667  ,
where  ∇  (m3)  is  the  ship’s  displacement
volume.
•  Example  :
•  Displacement  (m3)  :    5   20   50   100   200
•  Speed  (kn)  :     9.4   11.8   13.7   15.5   20.2

2
HSC RULES
•  HSC rules can be found in :

•  2000 HSC Code

•  RINa : Rules for the Classification

of High-Speed Craft

HYBRID SOLUTIONS
•  In  these  cases  the  buoyancy  is  partly  generated
by  the  hull  volume  and  partly  by  the
hydrodynamic  forces  or  by  aerodynamic  forces.
In  many  cases  the  air  reduces  the  fricZon
components  or  the  liE  force  reduces  the
buoyancy  volume.
•  These  condiZons  are  called  SES  (Surface  Effect
Ship),  ACS  (Air  Cavity  Ship),  HYSUCAT    (Hydrofoil
supported  Catamaran),  Foil  Cat,  StolkraE,  etc….
