Motivation: Into the future

Thinking about the future can be scary yet preparing for it is imperative. If you are to bring three (3)
things (you currently have) to the future, what are those?

 Water & Foods

 Money
 Medicines

Processing Questions

DIRECTIONS: After accomplishing the start-up activity, address the succeeding questions substantially.
Write your answers on the provided answer sheet.

1. What factors have you considered in selecting the things you have listed?

-The factors I have considered in selecting the things that I have listed are the possibility that I we can
suffer hunger, poverty and having illness/diseases.

2. In what specific ways do you think each thing you have mentioned could help you in the future?
Elucidate your answer.

-I have chosen food because it has a possibility that scarcity of water and food in the future. Secondly is
money, because its hard to earn especially this time of pandemic, so I must secure money for future
purposes. Lastly, medicines, we all know that health is wealth so I should bring medicine to secure my
health against illnesses.

Are you situated in a sustainable state?

The Philippines faces a bleak situation on rice and other crop productions. Numerous typhoons and
droughts have caused local rice production to be delayed, or in some cases even halted. This has not
only affected businesses but primarily the farmers themselves. Belonging to a primary sector that
produces food, it is ironic that farmers hardly earn a decent income in the country.

DIRECTIONS: In reference to the abovementioned context, respond coherently to the following

questions on the provided answer sheet.

1. Which of the three main aspects of food security presented by the World Health Organization
(WHO) is/are NOT met or often neglected in the Philippine society? Expound your answer.
-Food access is one of the neglected by WHO because according to my research, around 64% of the
population nationwide which accounts for 54.9 million Filipinos are chronically food insecure (IPC-
Chronic level 2 and above). Specifically, this represents 39% mild, 17% moderate and 8% severe chronic
food insecure population. It was clearly shows that the number of most Filipinos has no food access and
still suffering hunger. Food utilization or consuming a nutritious diet was also neglected because twenty-
nine percent of all Filipino children under five years old have been revealed to have stunted growth. This
was based on a recent 2021 study on undernutrition in the Philippines that has been conducted by the
World Bank.

2.What do you think is/are the repercussion/s of the country’s failure to realize or meet any of the
aspects of food security? Provide concrete examples.

- The repercussion of the country’s failure to realize or meet any of the aspects of food security are the
following; first the people will suffer hunger as the news report shows that a national survey conducted
from April 28 to May 2 among 1,200 adults found that 16.8% of Filipino families experienced
“involuntary hunger” or hunger due to lack of food at least once in the past three months of 2021.
Second effect is malnutrition, as the survey shows that every day, 95 children in the Philippines die from
malnutrition. Twenty-seven out of 1,000 Filipino children do not get past their fifth birthday, a third of
Filipino children are stunted, or short for their age. Stunting after 2 years of age can be permanent,
irreversible and even fatal. Furthermore, due to lack of food security, children who are food insecure or
come from families that are food insecure are more likely to require hospitalization and are at a higher
risk of chronic health conditions like anemia and asthma. They also have frequent oral health problems.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY

DIRECTIONS: In this module, you have learned “who is considered to be”; and “what it means to be” a
Global Citizen. Having the “characteristics of a global citizen” enumerated on page 14 as your checklist,
accomplish the following on the provided answer sheet:

1) Identify the characteristic/s that:

a) you have successfully attained;

- I have successfully attained the following;

 Aware of the wider world. As a part in our global community, I take a role in my community and
work with others by participating small events to make our world more peaceful, sustainable
and fairer.
 Respects and values diversity. To show respect for someone else's culture, we have to
recognize and understand our own culture and the value of diversity
 Has an understanding of how the world works. Being an adult, I have to be mature enough to
understand the world even it’s not working the way I want to happen. As much I am concern,
helping people even the strangers will make a change even in a small way.
 Willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place. As far I witnessed
unfair system in our country, I started to discipline myself to be fair even in small things, and for
sustainability, I extend my help to my family and friends’ when they need my help even though
they didn’t ask to.
 Being outraged by social injustice, for me the social justice in the Philippines is very unfair just
like the teenager that commits crime but couldn’t take in the jail due to juvenile law passed by
senator Pangilinan. That is why most of the teenager has the audacity to commit crimes because
they will not go to jail if they do so.

b) you are still trying to attain;

 Participates in the community at a range of levels, from the local to the global. I’ve been
participating small events from the local, but I haven’t reached the global range, yet I’m trying
my best to take a part to help and contribute to best that I can.

c) you admittedly failed to attain [Explicate all your answers]

 I admittedly failed to attain taking responsibility for one’s actions because for me, I don’t have
to take someone’s action, unless it’s my own action, if I did it myself then I take responsibility of
it but others did it then they should take responsibility of it.

2.) Considering your answers in item one (1), respond lucidly to the question: “What makes you a
global citizen?”

-Being a global citizen, I’m trying to understand other people and have empathy for them and I act fairly
in my choices, decisions, and words and that makes me a global citizen. I am willing to help and
cooperate with others. And I have my own ideas and express them, but I am open to changing them if
they are proved wrong. Being curious and want to learn more about the world. Moreover, I look after
the environment and don't waste things. As I am aware of the wider world and has a sense of my own
role as a global citizen. I respect and values diversity, and has an understanding of how the world works
economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically, and environmentally. I am outraged by
social injustice participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global,
and willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place.

Synthesis

While countries aim to have a strong economy, it has, in effect, sidelined the protection of the
environment. The usage of fossil fuels such as coal; clearing of forest lands for timber; and mining
practices are causing continuous environmental damage.
DIRECTIONS: Applying your major takeaways from this module, compose a speech concerning the
aforesaid dilemma from the perspective of a student. You may address it to your community, to political
leaders (local/national), or the world in general (Choose one). The speech should be written in a short
bond paper and should only comprise 300-500 words. Attach your output with the answer sheets
provided.

In structuring your speech, be guided with the following questions:

1. What is the current dilemma all about?

2. Who should be held accountable for the dilemma?

3. When does nation-states’ urge for economic growth become detrimental to the world?

4. What s plans do you propose to address the dilemma?

5. What specific research topic/s should be investigated to attain sustainable development?

Nowadays we’re facing global dilemmas in our environment, these problems include global
climate change, the usage of fossil fuels such as coal; clearing of forest lands for timber and mining
practices are causing continuous environmental damage.

Clearing of forest lands for timber in our province is very chronic, the mountain is now totally
bald that causes landslide whenever there’s a calamity of typhoon and heavy rain. These environmental
problems are serious matter that need to address by the local government. By the cooperation of the
residents, it has a high possibility that it will back to normal that the mountain will restore again to
prevent landslide and deforestation by the illegal smugglers. In the leadership of the local government
officials this problem will resolve all the way by giving punishment to those illegally cutting trees and
burning the grass on mountains for personal agenda. Secondly, giving mandatory tree planting over the
mountains and giving seminars for addressing the concern of environmental issues for the knowledge of
the people all over the society for the betterment of surroundings. For the sustainable development
attainment, the government should focus research about climate change that caused by cutting tress
especially in the forest and mountains. It was given that we’re are now in the latest technology that
even the nation-state urges for economic growth to build infrastructures by diminishing the agricultural
lands and mountains but it become detrimental to the world when the people themselves are affected
by high risk caused by the climate change in the future.

We as a global citizen has our own responsibility and obligation to our society as an initiative
action to help our global dilemmas. The initiative starts in ourselves by having discipline, because being
disciplined will fall everything into place, like you know your part as a citizen and willing to participate in
the community at any range of levels, from the local to the global, by willing to act to make the world a
more equitable and sustainable place and taking responsibility for one’s actions. By being aware of the
wider world to have a brighter future for the next generations.

Therefore, we must show our value to our environment that we live in, take the first step upon
our journey in making our world the best place to live in. Stop being selfish, instead be the volunteers to
take the first step for making better change in our society.
