BIO 401 Assignment Solution

Question 1 Part(a): Marks:

5+5=10
The following data give index numbers of 40 commodities in a certain year. Classify the
following marks in a frequency distribution
138 164 150 132 144 125 149 157 146 158 140
147 136 148 152 144 168 126 138 176 163 119
154 165 142 173 142 147 135 153 140 135 161
145 135 142 150 156 145 128

Also give the class boundaries, cumulative frequency and relative frequency for all the
classes.

Question 1:Part (b)

The following data represent weight measurements in kilogram of forty individuals in a

locality. Construct a stem-and-leaf display of these weight measurements.
48 53 49 52 51 63 60 53 64 59 58 47 49 45
79 65 62 60 68 65 73 88 69 83 78 81 86 92
81 77 82 76 75 91 73 92 64 52 75 85

Question 2: Marks: 5+5=10

(i) Construct the (i) Frequency polygon (ii) Ogive for the following distribution:

Class Limit 8-12 13-17 18-22 23-27 28-32

Frequency 5 1 3 6 5

Find Range

Arrange the data into ascending order so you can get Minimum value and t Maximum
value to find the Range. Let's arrange data into Ascending order

119 125 126 128 132 135 135 135 136 138 1 140

140 142 142 142 144 144 145 145 4 14 147

148 149 150 150 152 153 154 156 158 161 163
164 165 168 173 176

As we can see that the Minimum and maximum say to find now let's put these values in
the formula to find the Range Range= Maximum value —Minimum

Range= 176 - 119 Range is 57

Step 2 Find the Class width th is
To find the h we need to use its mu at is h = Range/k where k is the number of classes you
want to make so let's make 6 classes will take k as 6

h = 57/6 we get ro d is value so we get h = 10

Step 3 Make a frequency distribution table

As we h a out class width that is 10 we are going to make class intervals for

Example As we least value 119 so we will start interval less than 119 so we took 118.
Class
Intervals
118 -128
129 -139
140 - 150
151 -161
162 -172
173 - 183

Step 4 Create Class boundaries

As we have created class Intervals so we can make boundaries around them there is we
simple rule that subtract
0.5 from the minimum value of class interval and add 0.5 to maximum value of class
interval For example the

Class Boundaries

117.5-128.5

129.5-139.5

140.5-150.5

151.5-161.5

162.5-172.5

173.5-183.5
Step 5 Cumulative Frequency

Class Boundaries Cumulative Frequency CF

4 4 4

7 4+7 11

16 11+16 27

7 27+7 34

4 34+4 38

2 38+2 40

Step 6To find the Relative Frequency

Relative frequency means you need to divide each frequency with sum of the frequency
column its formula is
R.F = class frequency / sum of frequency suppose our first class frequency is 4 and sum is
40 we going to divide like 4/40 we get 0.1 lest make its column so you can easily understand

Class intervals Given Data Frequency

4 4/40 0.1

7 7/40 0.75

16 16/40 0.4

7 7/40 0.175

4 4/40 0.1

2 2/40 0.15

n=40 n=1
