BWRR 3033 RISK MANAGEMENT

Risk awareness among student of University Utara Malaysia regarding possibility of

losses associated with the destruction or theft of property in each inasis.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study

Risk is an uncertainty of an outcome. It is a situation where an exposure to loss
exists. One of classification of risk is personal risk. Personal risk is any risk that can
adversely affect the welfare of an individual. Lately, theft cases in campus of UUM have
become more frequent. Risk of losses associated with the destruction or theft of property
in each inasis can be referred to personal risk. Managing this type of risk is important to
protect individual’s belonging in future. Awareness among UUM student is our first line
of defense against losses of property in each Inasis following and enforcing policies or
action to prevent risk happen again. This risk can also be controlled by using one of the
risk control tool to minimize the losses.

2.0 PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

There are a few possibilities of problem from this research that have been
identified by us. Firstly, there is less awareness among students about theft cases.
Students usually do not care about theft cases occurring around them unless it is happen
on themselves. Besides, students are careless in protecting their own belonging
especially the valuable item such as laptop, handphone, printer, money and others. There
is a case where students loss their laptops and handphones when they are not in their
room (Ct Zahieyah. In Facebook [Newseed]. Retrieved September 21, 2016, from
https://m.facebook.com/groups/529453753799090?
view=permalink&id=1103850846359375).

Secondly, the security system of inasis or university is weak especially during

semester break. Security management of university for prevention the theft case is posing
a great problem because poor security system cannot core the cases in future. The

evidence is there is a case of vehicles losses which happened during Friday prayers where
we do not know who the theft is whether student or outsider (Muhammad Shafiq. In
Facebook [Newseed]. Retrieved from November 20, 2015, from
https://m.facebook.com/groups/529453753799090?
view=permalink&id=919376491473479).

Finally, there is no further action taken by the authorities for the theft cases.
Although it is difficult to find who is the theft whether among students or external parties,
an authorities must find an evidence to prevent it happen. They cannot let bygones be
bygones because that is their responsibilities.

3.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This following is objective of the research:

3.1 To identify the level sensitivity of students about the risk of losing goods.
3.2 To raise awareness among student about theft cases happen in each dormitory at
UUM.
3.3 To know which risk techniques and analysis is good in managing the risk. Loss
reduction is a risk control technique which can reduce the potential severity of
loss exposure.

4.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

University is an environment that houses thousands of students for carry out

academic activities. In addition to the students, a university also places various parties
such as staff, visitors, contract workers and so on. Therefore, an environment free from
discrimination, intimidation, or threats to physical and emotional well-being needs to
exist so that activities within the university are always running smoothly.

According to Roark (1993), a safe univerted environment is where students,

faculty and staff are free to conduct their daily business in and out of the classroom,
without fear of physical, emotional or psychological injury. Personal safety is a basic
human need that needs to be maintained if the university's mission wishes to continue in
the future.

The study clearly shows that university crime is an issue serious and worrying
about the university, students, parents of students, staff and the whole community as a
whole. Universities that have high crime rate will cause the community not to choose the
university, as well as prevent parents from sending their children to institutions that could
be considered unsafe.

Crime in the university turns out to be a worrying issue. If a crime occurs

frequently in university, it indirectly raises the issue of security of the students inside of
university. The issue of safety is not a new issue, it is even a major concern for parents
when their children go to college and university. In a study on parents' goals for students,
safety and health issues are getting higher perceptions than preparing for a job
environment.

But the question of security sometimes raises questions when data and criminal
statistics occur in universities in Malaysia is closed data or secret. This can be seen when
the crime statistics are going into the university is not easy to access and can not be
accessed via internet search. News of crime in the university is more published regularly
through newspaper reports and university bulletin boards.

3
BWRR 3033 RISK MANAGEMENT

Based on several security cases, it is clear that the security atmosphere at the
university needs better control. In dealing with security cases at the university, the
security forces are always blamed. However, there are some other factors that may cause
this to happen, examples of weaknesses in regulatory systems such as the lack of security
personnel, student negligence, and building infrastructure conditions or conditions.

There are some questions that arise from the statements that have been explained.
Did the university security department take that step effective in ensuring the safety of
students? With reports and information regarding non-open crime, does the student feel
that they are safe with the existing security controls within the university. Via of the
question, a major question what is the perception of the student against their safety at the
university.

Therefore, a study should be conducted to identify the perceptions of the students

against their safety from criminal aspects. In addition, the study was conducted can
identify campus security vulnerabilities based on their views students, as well as steps
that can be taken to improve the level safety in University Utara Malaysia.

5.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this study, primary and secondary data methodology is used to support data
accuracy. Primary data were taken from a small survey, using questionnaire instruments
to meet the objective. The questionnaire is divided into two sections, the first part is a
question about socio-demography and the second part is a question about perceptions and
suggestions to improve the safety and security level of each dormitory. Researcher uses
this method because it is more accurate and easy to get information from the student.
Secondary data is review from scholar journal related to our studies.

A total of 40 respondents participated in this survey, which consisted of students

of UUM both of which have experienced cases of theft in the dormitory or never. Not
only local students who participate but international students also participate.

7.0 CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS

In a nutshell, we conduct a study about the destruction or theft of property in each

Inasis among UUM students regarding the losses of property. The objective of the study
is to know which risk techniques and analysis is good in managing the risk. Loss
reduction is a risk control technique which can reduce the potential severity of loss
exposure. Besides, to give awareness among the students and this research is to overcome
and mitigate the theft or related case. We conduct a survey through a qustionnaire to
collect data which can support the research. The survey was developed based on cases
that have recently occurred in UUM and to identify the causes of theft cases and damage
to personal items that occurred in each student dormitory. The problems that have been
identified from the survey that both students and the responsible party should play their
role to reduce the possibility of losses of property.

We also discussed about the solutions regarding the destruction or theft of

property in each Inasis among UUM students. Some of the solutions are obtain from the
survey. The most important solutions are Inasis should improves the security by doing
patrol regularly and further action from authorized parties. Besides, students also must
make sure that they do not leave their room without lock the door and o not keep
excessive cash in the room. The respondants also suggested to install CCTV.
