B. Make an essay presenting your arguments regarding the issue on the Cry of Balintawak or Pugad
lawin.

THE FIRST CRY

The issue on the Cry of the Balintawak of Pugad Lawin was still a controversy. There are many
accounts of sources that can prove where and when did that happen. Has the first Cry happened in
Balintawak? How can Masangkay prove his version? Is it matter to know when and where did the first cry
happen?

Some people say that it is in Pugad Lawin and some say that it was in Balintawak. There are many
accounts of sources but there are only two accounts that have the potential to be more credible than the
other, it was the account of Pio Valenzuela and General Guillermo Masangkay. The version of Pio can be
reliable, why? It is because he said that he is an eyewitness of the event, but the place he said was different
to Masangkay, he said that the first cry was in Pugad Lawin. Pio also change the date and place of the
event and wrote in his second version. As an addition to this, if we read his work, we can’t find the name
of Masangkay who was also there, and that makes us confused. On the other hand, the account of
Masangkay who claimed that the cry happened in Balintawak had given a lot of details in the said event,
which makes it less of confusions and more credible. He said that the cry happened in Balintawak and also
said that he was with Pio at that time. Lastly, is it a matter to know when and where did the First cry
Happen? It doesn’t even matter at all if when and where did it happen, the important there was the
revolution conducted by Andres Bonifacio and his men. When they tear their cedulas as a sign of their
revolt, it was the start that the Katipunan became the revolutionary government to get freedom from the
Spaniards.

Many sources give us ideas and confusions about the first cry that leads to controversy. The
account of Pio may be credible but his work was lack of consistency because of changing the place and
date of the said event. On the other hand, the account of Masanglay gives a lot of information. However,
among those accounts, still, what matters the most is that we get freedom from the Spaniards because of
the braveness and heroism of our heroes, specifically Andres Bonifacio and his men.
