IS IT IN PUGADLAWIN OR IT IS
BALINTAWAK?
NARRATIVES
• News about the discovery of the Katipunan spread to
Manila and nearby suburbs, and Andres Bonifacio
immediately called for a general meeting.
• Bonifacio hurriedly changed the Code of the Katipunan.
• Various wings of the Katipunan gathered at the house of
Juan Ramos in Pugadlawin on August 23, 1896.
• Bonifacio asked his men whether they were willing to fight
to the bitter end.
• Except Teodoro Plata, who thought that it was too soon
for a revolution.
• Bonifacio asked them to tear their “cedulas” (residence
certificates) to pieces.
• The men immediately tore up their cedulas, shouting,
“Mabuhay and Pilipinas”

• Was studying medicine in University of Sto.


Tomas when he joined Bonifacio’s
Katipunan.

• At that time, Katipunan was barely a week


old. As one of its original members, the
doctor took on the responsibility of
establishing factions of the secret society
in different parts of Morong or Rizal
Province and Bulacan.
PASYA, PAGPUPUNIT AND UNANG LABANAN

The debate has long been clouded by a lack of


consensus on exactly what is meant by the “Cry”.
The term has been applied to three related but
distinct events –

• the “pasya” – the decision to revolt;

• the “pagpupunit” – the tearing of cedulas; and

• the “unang labanan” – the first encounter with


Spanish forces.
READINGS
THE CRY OF PUGAD LAWIN

• The second and latter version of the rally of the katipunan


by Dr. Valenzuela

• Happened in August 23 1896

• Believe that in Pugad Lawin. Katipunero’s including


Andres Bonifacio tore their Cedulas and shouted “LONG
LIVE THE PHILIPPINES”

• Many historians believe that this version is true rather the


first one.
EVIDENCES
• It is written in the ‘’MEMOIRS OF REVOLUTION” where Dr.
Pio Valenzuela claims that the “CRY” was stagged in Pugad
Lawin.

• In Valenzuela’s Memoirs states that the cry took place on 23


August at the house of Juan Ramos at Pugad Lawin. The
NHI influenced by Valenzuela’s memoirs. In 1963 upon the
NHI endorsment, President Diosdado Macapagal ordered
that the Cry be celebrated on 23 August and that Pugad
Lawin be recognized as its site.
TEODORO AGONCILLIO
• Teodoro Andal Agoncillo was a
prominent 20th-century Filipino
historian. The author of 1956 Revolt
of the Masses.
• He believe the later version of Dr. Pio
Valenzuela about the first cry was in
Pugad Lawin. He emphasize tearing
of the cedula (tax receipt) before a
crowd of Katipuneros who then broke
out in cheers.
• Pio Valenzuela, Briccio Pantas and
Cipriano Pacheco issued a joint statement
to the effect that the “Cry” had taken place
not in Balintawak, where the monument
had been erected, but in “the place known
by the name of Pugad Lawin”. This is the
statement, as published in the Philippines
Free Press in November 1930.

• Valenzuela maintained that the Cry happened on
24 August at the house of Tandang Sora
(Melchora Aquino) in Pugad Lawin, which he now
situated near Pasong Tamo Road. A photograph
of Bonifacio’s widow Gregoria de Jesus and
Katipunan members Valenzuela, Briccio Brigido
Pantas, Alfonso and Cipriano Pacheco, published
in La Opinion in 1928 and 1930, was captioned
both times as having been taken at the site of the
Cry on 24 August 1896 at the house of Tandang
Sora at Pasong Tamo Road.
The CRY OF BAHAY - TORO
• The another version of the “CRY” which launched the
Philippine revolution that is written by Santiago Alvarez.

• Santiago Alvarez, a prominent katipunan warlord of


Cavite, son of Mariano Alvarez, and relative of Gregoria
de Jesus.

• Alvarez was not an eye witness.

• It is said that in the morning at the barn of Kabesang


Melchora at a place called Sampalukan bario of Bahay
toro. About a 500 Katipuneros arrived and eager to join
the The Supremo. The Supremo decided a meeting inside
the Big Barn and at 12:00 adjourned amidst loud cries of
“LONG LIVE THE SONS OF THE COUNTRY”
GREGORIA DE JESUS’ VERSION OF THE
FIRST CRY
• Gregoria De Jesus is the wife of Andres
Bonifacio, and the “LAKAMBINI OF THE
KATIPUNAN”.

• Custodian of the Secret documents, seal,


and some weapons of Katipunan.

• According to her version of her first


“CRY” it occurred near Caloocan on
August 25 1896.
