Carl Critchlow was born at an early age in Liverpool in 1963,
{0 complete apathy from the comic art world, who, it would seem,
did not even know he existed, However, atthe age of three a momen

fof characters like Luther Arlucright and 2000 AD's Nemesis the
Warlock, It was through Bryan that the impressionable Carl became
aware that there was more (0 com ina bunch of superheroes
ouncing around in leotards. Inspired by his tutor, and by comics he
was now avidly consuming (food was expensive in those days), Carl
started drawing his own strips. And then, ona grey day in 1981 Theud
the Barbarian was bora! His first major appearance was in five-page
strip, which has appeared in the comics fanzine Arkensw ord and has
now been redrawn for reprinting in this very collection (ean you spot

AROUNO this time Carl moved on wart college in Liverpool, here
hhe continued to produce the occasional Theud stip. He aso com
bined with another ast, Euan Smith, to produce Dead Ard, 232 page
comic which included, among ocher delights, a 2-page-Thrud
anda 4-page strip entitled "The Black Current; which later ma
appearance inthe influential Warrior magazine. One day
hhouse he found himself icing though acopy ofa peculiar magazine
called Woite Dwarf, when hiseye was drawn, as if bythe
