Banana Leaf Dealer

Banana leaf is just one of the several leaves used in Odisha. In Odisha, the plates are
called Khali, and the small bowls are called dana. These were traditionally
synonymous with festivities and celebrations until plastic plates took over not more
than a decade ago.

It is still trendy in the eastern part of India and often used in snack stalls and temples.
But the only problem is one cannot comfortably eat Buffet-style. You have sat down
because the plates are not strong enough to hold too much food.

But given a choice between these disposable organic items and plastic, it's a minor
sacrifice.
The best thing is the manufacturing of these items can be both machine production as
well as handcrafted.

Even today, these leaf plates are an essential part of the cottage industry in these parts
and provide employment and steady income to a lot of women.

Banana leaves are large, flexible, and waterproof. They give a fragrance to food that is
prepared in or served on them. Cooking with banana leaves imparts a subtly sweet
flavour and aroma into the dish. The petals are not themselves consumed and are
dismissed later, and the contents are applied.

Besides adding flavour, the leaves keep juices in and protect food from burning, much
as foil does. In Tamil Nadu (India) leaves are thoroughly dried and used as packing
material for foodstuffs, and are also made into cups to hold liquids. The dried leaves
are called 'Vaazhai-ch- charge' in Tamil. Some South Indian, Filipino and Khmer
procedures apply banana sheets as a covering during frying. The leaves are following
removed. In Vietnamese food, banana sheets are used to cover meals such as cha-Lua.
