Hypothesis Testing: Test for Mean Difference of Two Samples with Variances Unknown (t-Test)

The t-test is used to validate the hypothesis that the mean difference of independent
samples from two populations with unknown variances are equal. It uses the sample means and
variances to facilitate the test that is based on a desired level of probability or p-value.

Software: MSExcel
Apparatus: Computer
Scheme: Individual

1. Use the weight data in Activity 6.1. Encode in an MSExcel worksheet.

2. Test the hypothesis that the difference in mean weight of the two color sets is 1.02 grams by
clicking Data on the main menu. Then, Data Analysis to show the window option for the
Analysis Tools. Based on the results in Activity 5.3, choose either t-Test: Two-Sample
Assuming Equal Variances or t-Test: Two-Sample Assuming Unequal Variances and click OK.

(Sample Screen)

3. In the t-Test window, enter the Input Range for Variable 1 (weight of color 1) and Variable 2
(weight of color 2). Then, input the Hypothesized Mean Difference which is 1.02 grams. Then,
click OK.

(Sample Screen)

4. Copy the results in the space below.

t-Test: Two-Sample Assuming Unequal Variances

  Variable Variable
1 2
Mean 474.286 406.974
Variance 84352.74 151692.2
Observations 15 15
Hypothesized Mean Difference 1.02
df 26
t Stat 0.528457
P(T<=t) one-tail 0.300832
t Critical one-tail 1.705618
P(T<=t) two-tail 0.601665
t Critical two-tail 2.055529

5. The P(T<=t) two-tail is the resulting p-value of the test. If the p-value is less than or equal to
0.05, the test’s level of significance, accept the Hypothesized Mean Difference. What is the p-
value of the test? Is the Hypothesized Mean Difference accepted or rejected?

Since the P(T<=t) two-tail is considered as the resulting p-value of the test, then the
p-value from the data analysis that was performed is equal to 0.601665. Therefore, since the
value is greater than 0.05, we reject the Hypothesized Mean Difference.
