1.0 INTRODUCTION

This test method may be used to determine the in-place density and unit weight of soils
using a sand cone apparatus. This test method may also be used for the determination of
the in-place density and unit weight of undisturbed or in situ soils provided the natural void or
pore openings in the soil are small enough to prevent the sand used in the test from entering
the voids. The soil or other material being tested should have sufficient cohesion or particle
attraction to maintain stable sides on a small hole or excavation, and be firm enough to
withstand the minor pressures exerted in digging the hole and placing the apparatus over it,
without deforming or sloughing.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORKS

The method statement for field density test covers all the filling areas for each layer 300mm
compacted fill materials for sand replacement, soil embankment, surcharge, subgrade, sub
base, and road base.

5.0 METHOD OF WORKS

1. Select a location that is representative of the area to be tested.

2. Prepare the surface of the location to be tested so that it is a level plane. The base
plate may be used as a tool for striking off the surface to a smooth level plane.
3. Seat the base plate on the plane surface, making sure there is contact with the
ground surface around the edge of the flanged centre hole.
4. Dig the test hole through the centre hole in base plate, being careful to avoid
disturbing or deforming the soil that will bound the hole. The sides of the hole should
slope slightly inward and the bottom should be reasonably flat or concave. The hole
should be kept as free as possible.
5. Soil that has been excavated should be stored in a plastic bag.
6. Clean the flange of the base plate hole, invert the sand-cone apparatus and seat the
sand-cone funnel into the flanged hole.
7. Put sand in the sand container.
8. Open the valve and allow the sand to fill the hole, funnel, and base plate. Take care
to avoid jarring or vibrating the apparatus while the sand is running. When the sand
stops flowing, close the valve.
9. Take the remaining sand and store in plastic bags
10. Weight the soil sample and the remaining density sand. Record the data.
11. Take a portion from the soil sample and put it into the moisture cans to determine it
moisture content, weight the sample and place it into the oven for 24 hours at 110 ±
50̊ C.
12. After that, weight the dried sample and record the data. Do the calculation and
analyse the result.

6.0 SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 Conditions and precautions listed in the project specifications shall be followed as

minimum.
 All staff involved in the project shall be inducted on the safety, health and
environmental issues associated with the work.
 Only trained personnel with relevant experience shall be allowed to handle
machinery.
 Appropriate safety signboards, barriers and lighting and other safeguards shall be
provided as required by the nature of and location of the works. All operations shall
be carried out in accordance with the safety requirements.
 All field personnel will use PPE safety requirements like safety shoes, helmets, cover
all, dust mask, etc. required.

7.0 TRAFFIC CONTROL ( If required )

i. The plastic barriers shall be used for the lane closure.

ii. Safety cones shall be placed at 5 meter spacing to centre for taper and 10
meter spacing centre for lane closure.
iii. Excavations and trenches shall be adequately protected by barriers (string
delineator or plastic barrier) at all times as directed by the Engineer. All
hazards within a coned-off are shall be signed with lane closure barriers,
cones and flashing lamps, unless they are protected by a safety fence or
concrete barrier.
