ABOUT THE AUTHOR:-
Nick Middleton is a British physical geographer and supernumerary
fellow of St Anne College, Oxford. He specialises in desertification.
As a geographer he has travelled to more than 50 countries. Going
to Extremes is a television programme for Channel 4 about extreme
lifestyles, in which Middleton experiences life in the hostile
conditions other cultures must endures.

• He is adventurous and at the same time considers the travel a chance to
research on various topics like altitude and its effect on the human body. He
describes the journey and the hardships faced on the Silk Road.
Daniel - Author's friend-
• He accompanied him on the journey to Mount Kailash.
Tsetan - Driver-
• He was a driver hired by the author. He was a very good and efficient driver.
He drove the car very carefully considering the safety of the passengers.
During the journey, he spoke to the author and gave important details of the
places they were passing by. When he found the author was not well, he
took him to Medical College and cared for his health. He was a good
Buddhist and believed that death is not the end of life.

SILK ROAD INTRODUCTION:-

The story is written by Nick Middleton. This


chapter is about the narrator's journey from
slopes of Ravu to Mount Kailash to complete
the kora. To bid him farewell, Lhamo gave
him a long sleeve sheepskin coat. He hired
Tsetan's car for his journey and took Daniel
along to escort him to Darchen.

Silk Road summary is about the author's journey


which starts from slopes of Ravu to Mt. Kailash.
This was to complete the kora. Thus, it gives us
an account of the journey they experience.
Moreover. the main aim of the journey was
religious mostly. We see that the author wishes to
complete the journey to Mt. Kailash. Thus, in
order to embark on this pilgrimage journey, he
chooses a tough one.

Further, the author hires


Tsetan and takes along Daniel as an acquaintance
to chaperon him to Darchen. Consequently, was
learning about his journey and his experience
through the Silk Road. He mentions how the
people in hilly areas are rather sensitive. The
author goes on to witness the beauty of Lake
Mansarovar and Darchen. Moreover, he faces a
lot of difficulties but is able to complete his
pilgrimage due to his undeterred faith.
