LITERATURE REVIEW ON SELF ESTEEM 09/23/2021

Self-esteem can be defined as our general view of ourself, as well as how you feel

about our strengths and limitations, is referred to as self-esteem. When we have a healthy

sense of self-esteem, we feel good about ourself and believe that we are worthy of others'

regard. When we have poor self-esteem, we don't appreciate our own thoughts and opinions.

There is a link between adolescent self-esteem and the dangers and protective factors

that affect their health and well-being. The goal of the study was to find out how often poor

self-esteem is among secondary school students in Vietnam, as well as the sociodemographic

factors that are linked to anxiety, depression, educational stress, and suicidal ideation.

A cross-sectional study methodology was utilised to recruit 1,260 students from three

secondary schools in Camtho City, Vietnam, in both urban and suburban settings. All

participants were asked to self-report their responses using a questionnaire. To avoid

potential reporting bias and to keep information confidential, this was done after class or at

home anonymously. The Centre for Epidemiology Studies Depression (CES-D), the anxiety

scale, and the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents were used in this study, and a more

complete technique description is provided such as suicidal ideation, risks and protective

factors and more.

Adolescents with low self-esteem were found to be 19.4% of the time. Attending

supplemental classes was a protective factor for low self-esteem, but high educational stress

and physical and emotional abuse by parents or other adults in the household were substantial

risk factors. There was a link found between poor self-esteem and increased anxiety,

depression, and suicide ideation.

In conclusion, anxiety, sadness, and academic stress are all linked to low self-esteem,

which has a negative impact on students' quality of life and is linked to suicidal ideation. As a

result of these findings, a school-based or web-based programme aimed at proactively

enhancing students' self-esteem and skills for dealing with academic stress may be necessary.
