Full Lesson Plan Overview
Completely Customizable!

The A Doll's House lesson plan is downloadable in PDF and Word. The Word file is
viewable with any PC or Mac and can be further adjusted if you want to mix questions
around and/or add your own headers for things like "Name," "Period," and "Date." The
Word file offers unlimited customizing options so that you can teach in the most efficient
manner possible. Once you download the file, it is yours to keep and print for your
classroom.

Lesson Plan Calendars

The Lesson Plan Calendars provide daily suggestions about what to teach. They
include detailed descriptions of when to assign reading, homework, in-class work, fun
activities, quizzes, tests and more. Use the entire A Doll's House calendar, or
supplement it with your own curriculum ideas. Calendars cover one, two, four, and eight
week units. Determine how long your A Doll's House unit will be, then use one of the
calendars provided to plan out your entire lesson.

Chapter Abstracts

Chapter abstracts are short descriptions of events that occur in each chapter of A Doll's
House. They highlight major plot events and detail the important relationships and
characteristics of important characters. The Chapter Abstracts can be used to review
what the students have read, or to prepare the students for what they will read. Hand
the abstracts out in class as a study guide, or use them as a "key" for a class
discussion. They are relatively brief, but can serve to be an excellent refresher of A
Doll's House for either a student or teacher.

Character and Object Descriptions

Character and Object Descriptions provide descriptions of the significant characters as

well as objects and places in A Doll's House. These can be printed out and used as an
individual study guide for students, a "key" for leading a class discussion, a summary
review prior to exams, or a refresher for an educator. The character and object
descriptions are also used in some of the quizzes and tests in this lesson plan. The
longest descriptions run about 200 words. They become shorter as the importance of
the character or object declines.

5
Daily Lessons

This section of the lesson plan contains 30 Daily Lessons. Daily Lessons each have a
specific objective and offer at least three (often more) ways to teach that objective.
Lessons include classroom discussions, group and partner activities, in-class handouts,
individual writing assignments, at least one homework assignment, class participation
exercises and other ways to teach students about A Doll's House in a classroom setting.
You can combine daily lessons or use the ideas within them to create your own unique
curriculum. They vary greatly from day to day and offer an array of creative ideas that
provide many options for an educator.

Fun Classroom Activities

Fun Classroom Activities differ from Daily Lessons because they make "fun" a priority.
The 20 enjoyable, interactive classroom activities that are included will help students
understand A Doll's House in fun and entertaining ways. Fun Classroom Activities
include group projects, games, critical thinking activities, brainstorming sessions, writing
poems, drawing or sketching, and countless other creative exercises. Many of the
activities encourage students to interact with each other, be creative and think "outside
of the box," and ultimately grasp key concepts from the text by "doing" rather than
simply studying. Fun activities are a great way to keep students interested and engaged
while still providing a deeper understanding of A Doll's House and its themes.

Essay Questions/Writing Assignments

These 20 Essay Questions/Writing Assignments can be used as essay questions on a

test, or as stand-alone essay topics for a take-home or in-class writing assignment on A
Doll's House. Students should have a full understanding of the unit material in order to
answer these questions. They often include multiple parts of the work and ask for a
thorough analysis of the overall text. They nearly always require a substantial response.
Essay responses are typically expected to be one (or more) page(s) and consist of
multiple paragraphs, although it is possible to write answers more briefly. These essays
are designed to challenge a student's understanding of the broad points in a work,
interactions among the characters, and main points and themes of the text. But, they
also cover many of the other issues specific to the work and to the world today.

Short Essay Questions

The 60 Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence
answer. They ask students to demonstrate a deeper understanding of A Doll's House by
describing what they've read, rather than just recalling it. The short essay questions
evaluate not only whether students have read the material, but also how well they
understand and can apply it. They require more thought than multiple choice questions,
but are shorter than the essay questions.

6
Multiple Choice Questions

The 180 Multiple Choice Questions in this lesson plan will test a student's recall and
understanding of A Doll's House. Use these questions for quizzes, homework
assignments or tests. The questions are broken out into sections, so they focus on
specific chapters within A Doll's House. This allows you to test and review the book as
you proceed through the unit. Typically, there are 5-15 questions per chapter, act or
section.

Evaluation Forms

Use the Oral Reading Evaluation Form when students are reading aloud in class. Pass
the forms out before you assign reading, so students will know what to expect. You can
use the forms to provide general feedback on audibility, pronunciation, articulation,
expression and rate of speech. You can use this form to grade students, or simply
comment on their progress.

Use the Writing Evaluation Form when you're grading student essays. This will help you
establish uniform criteria for grading essays even though students may be writing about
different aspects of the material. By following this form you will be able to evaluate the
thesis, organization, supporting arguments, paragraph transitions, grammar, spelling,
punctuation, etc. of each student's essay.

Quizzes/Homework Assignments

The Quizzes/Homework Assignments are worksheets that can be used in a variety of

ways. They pull questions from the multiple choice and short essay sections, the
character and object descriptions, and the chapter abstracts to create worksheets that
can be used for pop quizzes, in-class assignments and homework. Periodic homework
assignments and quizzes are a great way to encourage students to stay on top of their
assigned reading. They can also help you determine which concepts and ideas your
class grasps and which they need more guidance on. By pulling from the different
sections of the lesson plan, quizzes and homework assignments offer a comprehensive
review of A Doll's House in manageable increments that are less substantial than a full
blown test.

7
Tests

Use the Test Summary page to determine which pre-made test is most relevant to your
students' learning styles. This lesson plan provides both full unit tests and mid-unit tests.
You can choose from several tests that include differing combinations of multiple choice
questions, short answer questions, short essay questions, full essay questions,
character and object matching, etc. Some of the tests are designed to be more difficult
than others. Some have essay questions, while others are limited to short-response
questions, like multiple choice, matching and short answer questions. If you don't find
the combination of questions that best suits your class, you can also create your own
test on A Doll's House.

Chapter Abstracts
Act 1 Part 1
• Nora comes home from Christmas shopping and Torvald chides her for being a
spendthrift.
• Torvald has been promoted to manager of the bank which means no more financial
worries after his first paycheck next quarter.
• Torvald gives Nora extra money for household expenses and talks happily of tonight's
Christmas Eve, reminding Nora how she locked herself away to make gifts last
Christmas, only to have them destroyed.
• Two guests arrive, an unexpected stranger named Mrs. Linde, and the expected family
friend Doctor Rank.

Act 1 Part 2
• Mrs. Linde is Nora's childhood friend Christine, who has been widowed and worked to
support her now deceased mother and now grown brothers.
• Nora tells her friend that Torvald was ill and had to go away to Italy for a year to
recover, lying that the money came from her father and then later confessing that she
borrowed the money herself and has worked to pay it back, including secluding herself
last Christmas to do copying work.
• Krogstad, a widower with children who works at the bank, arrives to see Torvald, and
both Nora and Mrs. Linde, who once knew him, seem nervous at his presence.
• Doctor Rank comes out to talk to Nora, as Krogstad goes in to see Torvald, and talks
about the desire to "live" both as a drive of the ill and as a reason to work.

• After Krogstad leaves, Torvald comes out and agrees to give Mrs. Linde a job at the
bank.

Act 1 Part 3
• Krogstad, revealed as the source of Nora's loan, tells her to convince her husband not
to fire him from the bank, threatening her with the knowledge that she forged her
father's signature on the loan papers.
• Nora lies about Krogstad's visit, but Torvald realizes he's been there to ask Nora to get
his job back.
• Nora asks Torvald to decide on her costume for the fancy dress ball coming up.
• Torvald tells Nora that Krogstad was guilty of forgery and worse, lied to conceal it,
making Nora wonder if she's a corrupting influence on the children.

17
Act 2 Part 1
• Mrs. Linde comes to help Nora prepare her costume as a Neapolitan fisher-girl for the
party, where Nora will dance the Tarantella.
• Mrs. Linde suspects that Nora got her loan from Doctor Rank, who admires her, but
Nora discounts the idea, reveals that Doctor Rank is dying, and conceives of asking
Doctor Rank to pay off her loan for her.
• When Torvald returns, Nora tries to convince Torvald to let Krogstad work at the bank,
while not telling him the true situation, but he refuses and mails off Krogstad's dismissal.

Act 2 Part 2
• Doctor Rank visits and tells Nora that death is near for him, and he fears that Mrs.
Linde will replace him as the Helmers' close friend.
• Nora tries to ask Doctor Rank for the money to pay back the loan, but when he
confesses his deep feelings for her, she cannot ask him the favor.
• Nora receives a note from the maid and asks Doctor Rank to distract her husband,
lying that a new dress Torvald should not see has arrived.

Act 2 Part 3
• Nora sees Krogstad, who plans to blackmail her husband with the loan bond to secure
a high position at the bank, and Krogstad puts a letter to Tovald revealing everything in
the letterbox.
• After Krogstad leaves, Mrs. Linde promises to talk to Krogstad and try to get him to
take his letter back unread.
• Nora distracts Torvald from the letterbox by coercing him to help her with her dance,
which she performs manically.

• When Mrs. Linde returns, she says she's left a message for Krogstad, who was away.

Act 3 Part 1
• While Nora and Torvald are at the dance, Mrs. Linde sees Krogstad and says she
wants to renew her relationship with him. She's decided he should not ask for his letter
back, though, because there needs to be honesty between Nora and Torvald.
• Nora and Torvald return from the dance, and Mrs. Linde tells Nora that while Krogstad
will not hurt them, he will not retrieve his letter.
• Doctor Rank visits to get a cigar, talking about the dance and revealing to Nora that he
knows he's about to die.

18
Act 3 Part 2
• Torvald gets the mail and finds cards with black crosses from Rank, announcing his
death.
• When Torvald goes in to read the mail, Nora determines to kill herself, but Torvald
emerges and detains her.
• Torvald is horrified at what Nora is done, calling her unfit to raise their children, but
when a letter arrives from Krogstad returning the bond, Torvald immediately forgives
her, as if nothing had happened.

Act 3 Part 3
• Nora changes her clothes and tells Torvald that they must talk, and that like her father,
he's treated her as a doll instead of a person, dictating her thoughts and actions.
• Nora says that she doesn't love Torvald and that she didn't know before now who he
really was, more concerned about his own reputation than about her.
• Nora says she must educate herself and learn who she is, and she cannot hope to
ever come back unless they both change enough to have a true partnership, a wedlock.
She leaves.

Character Descriptions
Nora Helmer
This character is sensitive, sensible, and completely unaware of any self-worth until the
last act of the play. Initially appearing flighty and excitable, this character is most
concerned with being the charming and perfect spouse. This person is also secretive,
forging a signature on a loan and lying about the source of the money, the household
accounts, and taking odd jobs to earn extra money.

Torvald Helmer
This character is a smug lawyer and bank manager who represents the prevailing social
structure. This reserved, conservative person establishes rules for the person's spouse,
such as no eating of macaroons, which are sometimes petty and demeaning, wants to
control passion, and rewards subservient behavior.

Nils Krogstad
This character is desperate and so initially appears to be a villain; in fact, this character
has been trying to make up for earlier mistakes. This person has also been
disappointed in love and is bitter, angry at being denied the opportunity to start over and
concerned about supporting dependent children.

Kristine Linde
This person is a childhood friend of a central character. This character's spouse is dead,
and the character is quite desperate for work. This person also prevents the delivery of
an important letter, moving the play towards its conclusion.

Dr. Rank
This character is a family friend, who is secretly in love with a central character. This
person suffers from syphilis inherited from a parent and is dying.

20
Object Descriptions
The Tarantella
This is an Italian dance that Nora performs at the neighbor's holiday party on Christmas.
She rehearses it throughout the play, using its intense music at times to delay Torvald
from discovering the truth of her past actions, and other times to play the dutiful doll to
her doting husband.

Italy
The Helmers spend a substantial period of time in this place while Torvald regains his
health and recuperates from his illness. Nora finances this expensive medical R&R,
although Torvald believes her father is the man behind the money.

The Bank
When Torvald is promoted at this workplace, he becomes the manager and is in charge
of hiring and firing employees. He plans to fire Krogstad after discovering his past lies
and forgeries. He intends to hire Mrs. Linde in his place.

Torvald's Study

Daily Lessons
Lesson 1 (from Act 1 Part 1)
Objective

In the beginning of Act 1, Nora hides her macaroons from Torvald and lies about them.
The objective of this lesson is explore the reasons for and morality of Nora's deceptive
behavior.

Lesson

1} Have a volunteer bring in macaroons to share with the class at the beginning of this
lesson. At the beginning of class, ask students to share their parents' restrictions (past
and present) on their diets. Have they ever broken the rules to sneak a treat?

2) Read the section of the play where Nora hides her macaroons from Torvald and later
lies to him about having bought them. Discuss with the class whether they think
Torvald's rule against sweets is fair, and why Nora hides the macaroons and lies.

3) Break the students up into groups. Have each group discuss when it's moral or
immoral to lie. Have the group write down their reasons for their decision. What makes
a lie moral? What makes a lie immoral? Have the groups decide whether Nora's lying is
moral and immoral, and have the group decide how they think Nora ought to handle
Torvald's dictate about sweets, which she obviously disagrees with. Have the groups
share their results with the class for discussion.

4) Homework: Rewrite the scene between Nora and Torvald, if Nora did not lie about the
macaroons.

Lesson 2 (from Act 1 Part 1)

nicknames. The objective of this lesson is explore what these nicknames reveal about
Torvald's attitude and Nora and Torvald's relationship.

Lesson

1} Have each student find in the play an instance where Torvald uses a nickname or pet
name to describe Nora. Go around the class and have the students read the pet names
they've found. Discuss with the members of the class why Torvald uses these pet

22
names for Nora. What types of characteristics do the pet names evoke? What is
Torvald's attitude toward Nora?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group make a list of the nicknames
identified in the play, and have the group write down what each nickname shows about
Torvald's attitude and about Nora and Torvald's relationship. Have the groups come up
with 5 additional nicknames for Torvald to use. What would each additional nickname
show about Torvald's attitude and relationship with Nora? Have the groups share their
responses with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Write 5 nicknames for Nora to call Torvald. What would these nicknames
say about Nora's attitude and relationship with Torvald?

Lesson 3 (from Act 1 Part 1)

borrow money. Discuss Torvald and Nora's differing attitudes toward money and
borrowing. What does Nora's attitude show that she values most? What does Torvald's
attitude show that he values most?

2) Have students come to the front of the class in pairs and role-play discussions
between Torvald and Nora. Have the student playing Torvald argue that they should
never borrow money, and have the student playing Nora argue the benefits of
borrowing.

citing passages from the play. Write students' thoughts on one side of the board, to form
an image of Nora and Torvald's idyllic image of their family life together. Draw a line
down the center of the board. Ask students to find hints or indications in the play of
problems in Nora and Torvald's relationship. Write down the problems that are indicated
on the other side of the board. Discuss with the students what the underlying problems
are. Why do Nora and Torvald not see or ignore these problems?

2) Break the students up into groups. Assign each group to either represent Nora or
Torvald. Have each group write down a description of Nora and Torvald's relationship
from their character's point of view. Then have the groups write down how they think the
author sees the relationship, and how they as audience members see the relationship.
Have students share their descriptions with the class.

3) Homework: Nora and Torvald discuss with happiness the future, where they won't
need to worry about money. Write your own prediction of Nora and Torvald's next
Christmas and compare it to the Christmas they currently envision.

about Nora's character.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the scene of Mrs. Linde's first visit to Nora. What is Nora's attitude
toward her friend? What questions does Nora ask Mrs. Linde, and what does Nora say
about herself? Go through the dialogue in the scene and identify when Nora is focused
on herself, and when she is focused on Mrs. Linde. Identify lines where Nora reminds
herself to focus on her friend. How much of the dialogue is about Nora and how much is
about Mrs. Linde? Discuss what this shows about Nora.

2) Break the students up into groups. Ask students to pretend they're Mrs. Linde, and
write down their responses and reactions to their conversation with Nora. Would they be
offended or upset? How would they respond?

3) Designate a student to roleplay Nora, and have each group send a representative to
role play Mrs. Linde. Have the student playing Mrs. Linde confront Nora about her
behavior, and talk with Nora about why she acts the way she does.

24
4) Homework: Based on Nora's conversation with Mrs. Linde, write a paragraph
describing Nora's character.

this lesson is explore Nora's hierarchies of values.

Lesson

1} Write the term "hierarchy" on the board. Ask students to define the term "hierarchy."
What is a hierarchy? Write students' ideas on the board, and create a class definition of
the word. Ask students how values form a hierarchy and how that relates to our actions.

2) Ask students to find examples in the play of what Nora values more or less, citing
specific lines or passages. Write down on the board the examples that the students
come up with.

3) Break the students up into groups. Have each group take the list of values, and
create a hierarchical diagram of Nora's values. Have the students share their
conclusions with the class for discussion.

4) Homework: Come up with three moral or ethical quandaries. Based on Nora's system
of values, how would Nora react to each one? Explain why you think Nora would act this
way.

Lesson 7 (from Act 1 Part 2)

about having borrowed the money to save Torvald's life. Ask students to cite words and
phrases Nora uses to describe the event, and write them on the board. As a class,
discuss how Nora feels about her own actions.

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group write a description of what Nora
did that she's keeping secret, and why she did it. Have each group decide whether they

25
think her actions were admirable or not, and why. Then have the students decide
whether Nora believes her actions were admirable, and why. Have students share their
results with the group.

3) Homework: Answer the following questions: Should Nora have done something
different when she discovered that Torvald needed a lengthy trip to a warmer climate for
his health? Why or why not? What would Nora think of your opinion?

Lesson 8 (from Act 1 Part 2)

Objective

The play uses foreshadowing in several scenes, by hinting at upcoming events and past
occurrences. The objective of this lesson is to explore the play's use of foreshadowing.

Lesson

1} With the class, read Nora's description of taking copying work at Christmas. Ask
students to identify the mention of this time period during Nora's earlier conversation
with Torvald. What new meaning can they apply to that earlier conversation now?

2) Write the word "foreshadowing" on the board. Ask students to contribute definitions of
the word and concepts related to the word, and write the students' contributions on the
board. Create a class definition of foreshadowing.

3) Break the students up into groups. Ask the groups to go through Act 2, to try to find
foreshadowing of future events. Have each group make a list of foreshadowing they've
identified, and what they expect to happen in the future.

4) Homework: Write a short essay explaining why the author of A Doll's House might
have wanted to use foreshadowing. What does foreshadowing add to the play? Cite
specific examples in the play.

Lesson 9 (from Act 1 Part 3)

Objective

Nora has little conception of how the law works, or why the law works the way it does.
The objective of this lesson is to explore what implications Nora's understanding of the
law has about her character.

26
Lesson

1} As a class, read Nora's reaction to Krogstad's threat of legal prosecution for what
she's done. Discuss this reaction of with the class. What is Nora's perception of the role
of the law, and what's legal or illegal? Why might Nora have that perception?

2) Break the students up into groups. Give each group an example of a legal issue or
court case. Have each group decide what Nora's reaction to this issue or case. What
would Nora think the proper decision would be? How would it differ from the actual
decision or resolution? How would Nora's reaction relate to her values and her
character? Have the groups share their responses with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Pretend that you're Nora's defense attorney in a court case about her
forging her father's signature. Write a closing statement, making a case for Nora's
innocence.

Lesson 10 (from Act 1 Part 3)

Objective

Nora sees Krogstad only as a villain and an obstacle to her own happiness. The
objective of this lesson is to explore Nora's attitude toward Krogstad.

Lesson

1} As a class, read Nora's confrontations with Krogstad. Ask the class to find words and
phrases that indicate Nora's attitude toward Krogstad. Write the words and phrases that
students identify on the board. Have each student write a description of Krogstad's
character, as Nora sees it. Have the students read their descriptions of Krogstad to the
class.

2) Break the students up into groups. Have the students discuss their descriptions of
Krogstad, from Nora's point of view. Have the students identify reasons why Nora feels
the way she does about Krogstad. They should identify both aspects of Nora's character
and aspects of the situation or Krogstad's actions as reasons. Have the students decide
whether they think Nora's attitude toward Krogstad is fair. Have each group share their
results with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Write a letter from Nora to Krogstad, explaining her opinion of him. Write
Krogstad's responding letter to Nora.

27
Lesson 11 (from Act 1 Part 3)
Objective

After Krogstad leaves, Torvald catches Nora in a lie. The objective of this lesson is to
evaluate Torvald's attitude toward lying and deceit and his reaction to catching Nora in a
lie.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of Act 1 where Torvald reprimands Nora for lying, and the
section later on where Torvald discusses the evil of lies and deceit. Ask students to
explain Torvald's attitude toward lying. How wrong is lying according to Torvald?
Compare Torvald's mild and forgiving attitude to Nora's lie with his condemnation of
Krogstad. How are the two instances different, and why does Torvald react differently?

2) Break the students up into groups. Give each group a list of potential lies someone
might tell or deceitful action someone might take. Have each group decide what they
think Torvald's reaction would be to each instance of lying, and why. Have the groups
share their conclusions with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Based on Torvald's ideas about lying, how would Torvald react to finding
out Nora has been lying about buying macaroons? How would he react to finding out
that Nora lied about the Christmas presents being destroyed last year? How would he
react to finding out Nora's secret about borrowing the money to save his health?

Lesson 12 (from Act 1 Part 3)

Objective

Torvald lectures Nora on how parents' morality is passed down to their children. The
objective of this lesson is to explore the play's theme of parents' affect on their children.

Lesson

1} Ask students to talk about what they've learned from their parents. How have their
parents' ideas about life, justice, or morality affected their own ideas? In what ways do
they behave like their parents? Discuss with students how big an effect parents' have on
their children.

2) Ask the students to read the end of Act 1, where Nora becomes afraid she may be a
bad moral influence on her children. Discuss this section with the students. Is Nora a
bad influence on her children? Why does she think that her deceit will have the same
type of effects that Torvald ascribes to Krogstad's deceit? Is Torvald right or wrong in his
conclusions? Is Nora's deceitfulness comparable to Krogstad's?

28
3) Break the students up into groups. Ask each group to list characteristics of Nora and
Torvald. Which of these characteristics do they think will be passed down to Nora and
Torvald's children, and how? Have the groups share their responses with the class for
discussion.

4) Homework: Write a one-page description of how you envision Nora's children at 18

years old.

Lesson 13 (from Act 2 Part 1)

Objective

During Act 2, Nora considers leaving her children to be raised by someone else. The
objective of this lesson is to explore whether this would be a selfish or a selfless act for
Nora.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the conversation between Nora and the nurse at the beginning of Act
2. Ask the students why Nora is questioning the nurse about her children being raised
by strangers. What is in Nora's mind? Ask the students whether they think Nora would
be making a good or bad choice by leaving her children to be raised by others. Why
might Nora want to leave her children?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group make two charts, one for Nora
staying with her children, and one for Nora leaving her children. In each chart, have
students list pros and cons of the option for Nora, and pros and cons of the option for
the children. Have each group decide which would be the better choice for Nora and
which would be the better choice for the children. Have each group share its
conclusions with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Imagine that Nora has left her children and that they've grown up without
her. Write a letter from one of the grown children to Nora.

Lesson 14 (from Act 2 Part 1)

Objective

Nora does not tell Torvald the real reason that she wants her husband to let Krogstad
keep his job. The objective of this lesson is to explore Nora's reasons for keeping the
truth from Torvald.

29
Lesson

1} Read the section of the play where Nora tries to convince Krogstad to keep his job.
Ask the students for examples of other reasons Nora could give Torvald, to try to
convince him to let Krogstad keep his job. Why doesn't she share with him the real
reason she wants Krogstad to keep his job?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group predict Torvald's reaction to
learning what Nora has done, and what might happen next. Each group should give
reasons for their predictions. Have the groups share their predictions with the class for
discussion, and as a class, decide on the best prediction.

3) Homework: Write a 1-page argument to Torvald, trying to convince him to let

Krogstad keep his job.

Lesson 15 (from Act 2 Part 1)

Objective

Nora and Torvald are the two central characters of this drama, which explores their
relationship's dynamic. The objective of this lesson is to compare Nora and Torvald's
characters.

Lesson

1) On the board, make a Venn diagram. Label one circle Nora and the other Torvald.
Ask students to find lines or passages in the play that reveal Nora and Torvald's
characters. Have the students read their lines or passages, and tell what characteristic
or characteristics it reveals. Add the character traits to the Venn diagram on the board,
prompting students to explain whether it applies to just one character or both. Construct
a complete Venn diagram this way, comparing Torvald and Nora.

2) Have each student write down a roleplay situation for Nora an Torvald. Then, have
students come to the front of the class in pairs, and assign each student to roleplay
either Nora or Torvald. Choose one of the situations at random, and have the students
roleplay the situation.

3) Homework: Write a short essay comparing and contrasting Torvald and Nora.

Lesson 16 (from Act 2 Part 2)

Objective

Doctor Rank discusses with Nora his suffering from syphilis, which has been passed
down from his father, but the discussion is covert, leaving much implied and little stated

30
outright. The objective of this lesson is to explore what the characters' treatment of the
topic of venereal disease implies about societal norms and cultural unspoken rules.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the discussion of Doctor Rank's syphilis between Nora and Doctor
Rank during Act 2. Then, read the discussion of the same thing between Nora and Mrs.
Linde earlier in the act. Ask students what Rank's father has passed down to him,
clarifying the passage as necessary. Ask students why the characters use euphemisms
to talk about Rank's father's "excesses." Why is Mrs. Linde surprised that Nora knows
"anything about such things"?

2) Break the students up into groups. Give each group a set of circumstances (such as
people at a dinner party, a woman in a doctor's office, etc.). Have the group write a
dialogue where the people in the circumstances talk about Doctor Rank's condition.
Have the groups read their dialogues for the class. Discuss how people talk about the
subject differently in different circumstances, with different people. Ask students why this
is the case.

3) Homework: What are the social and cultural rules or beliefs that cause the characters
in the play to talk euphemistically about Doctor Rank's disease and his father's
"excesses"?

Lesson 17 (from Act 2 Part 2)

Objective

Doctor Rank is Nora's closest friend in the play, as well as her deep admirer. The
objective of this lesson is to explore Doctor Rank's character traits.

Lesson

1} Have students go through the play and choose lines or passages that give
information about Doctor Rank's character. Have each student read his or her excerpt
and explain what it implies about Doctor Rank's character. Based on the students'
analysis, write descriptive terms about Doctor Rank on the board.

2) Break the students up into groups. Provide each group with two or three potential
situations. Ask the groups to determine how Doctor Rank would react to each situation,
and what about his character leads them to their conclusions. Have the groups share
their conclusions with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: What would Doctor Rank have done if Nora had asked him to help her?
How might it change their relationship?

31
Lesson 18 (from Act 2 Part 2)
Objective

As soon as Doctor Rank professes his love for Nora, Nora realizes that she can't ask
him for help with her troubles. The objective of this lesson is to understand Nora's
reasons for refusing to ask Doctor Rank for help.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the scene where Doctor Rank professes his love for Nora, and Nora
decides not to ask Doctor Rank for help. Ask the students why they think Nora decided
not to ask Doctor Rank for help. Remind students of the hierarchy of values they made
for Nora. Does this hierarchy explain Nora's behavior? Does it need to be modified,
based on the information in this scene?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group predict what would happen if
Nora asked Doctor Rank for help. Are the predicted consequences good or bad for
Nora? Is Nora's decision based on potential consequences? What else might it be
based on? Have groups share their conclusions with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Write a letter from Nora to Doctor Rank, explaining why she refused to
ask him for help.

Lesson 19 (from Act 2 Part 3)

Objective

Once Krogstad puts his letter in the letterbox, a metaphorical clock starts ticking until
the time Torvald will discover the truth. The author uses this device to build tension in
the play. The objective of this lesson is to understand how the author uses the letter in
the letterbox, as well as the upcoming party, to build tension.

Lesson

1} Introduce the idea of suspense. Ask students to define suspense and what creates a
suspenseful scene. Have students provide examples of suspenseful scenes they
remember from movies or books. How do these scenes create suspense?

2) As a class, read the scene where Krogstad drops the letter into the letterbox. Ask the
students why the author has Krogstad put the letter in the box instead of giving in to
Torvald or going to talk to Torvald. How does the letter in the letterbox generate
suspense?

32
3) Break the students up into groups. Have each group make a list of reasons why the
author has Krogstad deliver the letter to the letterbox. Have each group come up with 3
alternative actions Krogstad might have made. How would these actions change the
story or the audience's experience of it?

4) Homework: Find 3 additional elements, besides the letter in the letterbox, that provide
tension or suspense in the play, and explain how they provide tension or suspense.

Lesson 20 (from Act 2 Part 3)

Objective

Krogstad is not simply an unfeeling villain, but a person with his own troubles. The
objective of this lesson is to explore Krogstad's character.

Lesson

1} Have students go through the play and choose lines or passages that give
information about Krogstad's character. Have each student read his or her excerpt and
explain what it implies about Krogstad's character. Based on the students' analysis,
write descriptive terms about Krogstad on the board.

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group create a Venn diagram
comparing Krogstad to Nora. Are Nora's crimes and Krogstad's crimes comparable?
What makes Nora more sympathetic, if she is more sympathetic? Are Nora's motives
more noble than Krogstad's?

3) Homework: Pretend that you are Krogstad's lawyer, defending him against a charge
of blackmail by Nora and Torvald. Write a closing argument defending Krogstad.

Lesson 21 (from Act 2 Part 3)

Objective

Nora's frantic dance at the end of Act 2 reflects the emotional turmoil that she's
experiencing and is an important symbol in the play. The objective of this lesson is to
understand the symbolism in the play.

Lesson

1} Have each student bring to class a definition of the term "symbolism" and an example
of a symbol. Have students share their definitions and examples with the class, and
come up with a whole-class definition of the term.

33
2) As a class, read the end of Act 2, where Nora dances the tarantella. Ask students in
what way the dance is symbolic in the play. What does it show about the characters and
the action of the play? Why does the author choose to end the act with Nora's dance?

3) Break the students up into groups. Have each group find three other symbols in the
play, and identify what the symbols mean. Have the groups share their conclusions with
the class for discussion.

4) Homework: Choose a symbol from the play and write a short essay about what the
symbol shows and how it enhances the play.

Lesson 22 (from Act 3 Part 1)

Objective

Mrs. Linde has an opportunity to save Nora and prevent Torvald from finding out the
truth, but she takes it upon herself to force her friend to a moment of honesty with her
husband. The objective of this lesson is to explore why Mrs. Linde decides not to save
Nora from the moment of revelation she dreads.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of the novel where Mrs. Linde meets with Krogstad. What
were students' reactions to Mrs. Linde's decision to ask Krogstad not to get the letter
back? What is Mrs. Linde's reasoning for exposing Nora to her husband? Is Mrs. Linde
a good or a bad friend?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have the students decide what they would do if
they were Mrs. Linde. Would they stop Torvald from getting Krogstad's letter or not?
Would they try to help Nora be more honest with her husband? Could Mrs. Linde have
promoted honesty between Nora and Torvald without leaving the letter for Torvald to
read? Have the groups come up with as many ideas as they can. Have the groups
share their ideas with the class for discussion.

3) Homework: Write a short essay telling whether you believe Mrs. Linde is a good
friend or not. Explain your reasoning, and use examples from the play.

Lesson 23 (from Act 3 Part 1)

Objective

Torvald's distaste for certain domestic chores, like sewing, is alluded to earlier in the
play, and during Act 3 Torvald explains his dislike for knitting as a graceless activity. The
objective of this lesson is to explore what Torvald's view of such domestic activities says
about his character.

34
Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of the play where Torvald explains how ungraceful
knitting is, and recommends embroidery instead. Ask students whether the gracefulness
of embroidery or knitting is a good reason to approve or disapprove of these activities.
Why does Torvald judge embroidery and knitting by how someone looks doing the
activity, rather than the embroidered or knitted results?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group make a list of Torvald's
character traits, based on the play. Each group should identify which character traits are
indicated or supported by Torvald's perception of knitting, and how Torvald's opinion of
knitting shows these traits. Have the groups share their results with the class for
discussion.

3) Homework: Identify 5 activities that you believe Torvald would dislike, based on his
characteristics, and explain why you believe he would dislike them.

Lesson 24 (from Act 3 Part 1)

Objective

Torvald expresses throughout the play his belief that Nora should follow his wishes in
every way, and in Act 3, he clearly sees it as Nora's obligation to succumb to her
husband's sexual desires, regardless of her wishes. The objective of this lesson is to
explore Torvald's feeling of ownership of Nora.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the portion of Act 3 when Nora and Torvald come back from the
party, from when Mrs. Linde leaves to Rank's arrival. Ask students to interpret Torvald's
last line before Rank's arrival: "What's that? You're joking, my little Nora! You won't-- you
won't? Am I not your husband--?" Why does Torvald feel that Nora must follow his
wishes and desires?

2) Ask students to identify passages in the book where Torvald assumes that he can
control Nora's thoughts or actions. Go around the room and have students read the
passages they've identified, and explain what the passage shows about Torvald's view
of his and Nora's relationship. Write down notes on the board about Torvald's perception
of his marriage.

3) As a class, discuss the idea of marriage. What should a marriage be? Compare the
class's idea of marriage to Torvald's idea of marriage.

4) Homework: Discuss what Torvald's feeling of ownership of Nora shows about his
personality. Identify specific personality traits of Torvald and connect them with his
feeling of ownership.

35
Lesson 25 (from Act 3 Part 2)
Objective

When Torvald is reading the letters from the letterbox, Nora believes that she will kill
herself. The objective of this lesson is to discuss whether it's truly within Nora's
character to kill herself, as she has determined to do.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of the play when Torvald goes in to read the letters. Ask
the class what Nora is planning to do and why. Discuss with the class why Nora doesn't
leave immediately, if she is intent on killing herself. Ask the students whether they think
that Nora truly means to kill herself or not. Students' opinions are probably divided. If
not, you may need to appoint students to represent varying opinions.

2) Break the students up into two groups, based on their opinions of Nora's intentions.
Have the students in each group work together to find evidence about Nora's character
to support their opinion. Hold class debates about whether Nora intends to kill herself,
with each side presenting evidence from the play about Nora's character.

3) Homework: Write a one page description of Nora's character, citing evidence from the
play.

Lesson 26 (from Act 3 Part 2)

Objective

Torvald's reaction to reading the letter is in complete opposition to Nora's expectations.

The objective of this lesson is to compare Nora's expectations with Torvald's reaction.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of the play where Torvald emerges from the study and
reacts to what he's read in Krogstad's letter. Is this reaction in line with what they've
learned about Torvald's character? Ask the class what Torvald's reaction shows about
his character and what his character values.

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group write a description of the
reaction Nora imagined Torvald would have, using evidence from the play. Have the
groups decide what Nora thinks Torvald's character and values are, based on the
reaction Nora anticipates. Have the groups create Venn diagrams comparing Torvald's
real reaction and character to Nora's anticipated one. Have the groups share their
conclusions with the class for discussion.

36
3) Homework: How do you think Torvald ought to have reacted to the letter he received
from Krogstad? Describe what this reaction would show about Torvald's character and
why this reaction would be better than Torvald's actual reaction.

Lesson 27 (from Act 3 Part 2)

Objective

When Torvald realizes that Krogstad is no longer a threat to his reputation or position,
Torvald completely reverses his position. The objective of this lesson is to explore what
Torvald's reversal says about his character.

Lesson

1} As a class, read the section of Act 3 where Torvald undergoes a reversal, after
reading the second letter from Krogstad. Ask the students why Torvald's position
changes so drastically. What does this say about his beliefs?

2) Break the students up into groups. Have each group predict how Torvald would
explain his behavior, how Nora would explain Torvald's behavior, and how the group
would explain Torvald's behavior. Have the groups share their results with the class.

3) Homework: Predict what Torvald would do after he had time to think about the
situation, if he did not get the second letter from Krogstad. Would he follow through on
his proposed "solution"?

Lesson 28 (from Act 3 Part 3)
