In humanity we trust

“Human beings are not worthy of trust”

Dean Walcott

To trust somebody to do even the smallest things is something that many people struggle
with ,but that kind of confidence in something or somebody pales in comparison to the
amount of trust a patient puts in the hands and knowledge of his doctor. The patient’s present
and future lies in the hands of their doctor and the doctor’s team so it is no wonder that not
many a person are eager to have faith in the medical system.
Firstly, there are many situations in which a person will not go to the hospital ,even in
situstions that are critical for their well-being,just because the masses seem to have an
uninformed generalized fear of doctors ,as if they would be tortured in hospitals ,not
treated.Doctors make mistakes and going to the hospital is almost never a comfortable
experience but that doesn’t mean that the medical system should not be trusted.Even though
doctors should never do wrong on purpose ,that does not mean that errors never happen. In the
movie “Patch Adams” the dean of the Virginia School of Medicine tries to explain to his
students that humans should not be trusted ,because humans make errors and therefore he
would take the humanity out of them in order to make them perfect machines whom are not
able to make mistakes. While the dean surely had good intentions the method and his aproach
were primitive and cruel.
On the other hand, there have been many cases of malpractice in the past ,some because of
pure incompetence and some because of human error. These situations do not provide a solid
foundation of trust for patients to lay their trust on.The only problem is that when people
analyze a system or a person by looking at their past deeds they refuse to see the good
things, only having eyes for the bad things that happened. For example,if a surgeon operates
on a pacient and they die or are left with long lasting health problems the surgeon will be
judged taking into consideration only the case where something bad happened, while he
probably had hundreds if not thousands of previous succesful surgeries before the one he did
wrong. It is not fair to judge anybody only by the things they did wrong ,but also by the things
they did right.
To conclude,I believe that medicine is something so human that the thought of removing
the humanity out of medicine is prepostorous. It is wrongful to expect of somebody to never
make mistakes ,whoever that might be.
