B.J. HABIBIE

B.J Habibie is the third president of the Republic of Indonesia to be appointed after President
Suharto stepped down. He is also known as the father of aircraft because he succeeded in
creating Indonesia's first aircraft.
His full name is Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie. He was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi on 25
June 1936. His wife's name is Hasri Ainun Habibie, and he has two children named Ilham
Akbar and Thareq Kemal. His father, Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and RA Tuti Marini
Puspowardojo, was a farmer from Gorontalo of Bugis descent and his mother was a Javanese
noblewoman from Yogyakarta. His parents met while studying in Bogor. When he was 14
years old, Habibie's father died.
After graduating from high school in Bandung in 1954, he then entered ITB. He received a
Diploma from the Technische Hochschule, Germany in 1960, which later received a
Doctorate degree from the same place in 1965. BJ Habibie studied Mechanical Engineering at
the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1954. However, he only spent six months there for his
studies. This is because a year later he chose to continue his education at the Rheinisch
Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen, Germany.
In the Indonesian government, BJ Habibie's career began during the reign of President
Suharto. He was asked to return from Germany and served as Minister of State for Research
and Technology from 1978 to March 1998.
During the 1998 crisis, Suharto stepped down and appointed BJ Habibie as the 3rd President
of Indonesia from 1 May 1998 - 20 October 1999. Habibie served as the 7th Vice President
from 14 March 1998 to 21 May 1998 in the VII Development Cabinet under Suharto.
Before returning to Indonesia, Habibie had a career in Germany. It is known that the former
president had worked in various airlines and aircraft construction companies in Germany
after marrying his wife, Hasri Ainun Besari. BJ Habibie had designed the CN-235 aircraft
project with engineers from the Spanish company, CASA, whose prototype was successfully
airborne at the end of 1983. With his intelligence and experience, the figure of BJ Habibie
finally succeeded in making Indonesia's first aircraft, namely the N250 Gatotkaca, in 1995.
Together with his team from the Nusantara Aircraft Industry (IPTN), BJ Habibie designed a
propeller plane with a carrying capacity of about 50 passengers and can be enlarged to 70
passengers named the N-250 Gatot Kaca. With various achievements and his great role for
the Indonesian people, the life story of BJ Habibie was also made into the big screen.
Not only about his inspiration, but Indonesian people also know BJ Habibie because of his
love story with his wife Ainun. This faithful love story was immortalized in a film called
'Habibie & Ainun' in 2012, which was adapted from a book by BJ Habibie himself.
Even until the end of his life, Habibie's love story still inspires many people. BJ Habibie is
buried next to his wife Ainun in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery slot 120. Apart from that, he
also wrote several books. One of them is famously titled Detik-Detik Yang Determining:
Indonesia's Long Road Towards Democracy (Decisive Moments: Indonesia's Long Road
Towards Democracy) that recalled the events of May 1998.
