Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie


People certainly know Mr.Habibie as one of the most genius engineer in Indonesia and his love
with Mrs. Ainun . Their love was one of the most inspiring love story for many people. But,
other than that, people also often talk about his political journey in Indonesia.
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie was born on June 25, 1936 at Parepare, South Sulawesi. Mr. Habibie
married to Mrs. Ainun on May 12, 1962, and had two sons. Habibie’s childhood was passed
along with his brother at Parepare South Sulawesi and then he moved to Bandung . After
graduating from highschool, he entered ITB (Institute Teknologi Bandung) but not finished his
study because he got scholarship to continue his study in Germany.
Habibie spent most his education and work carrier in Germany, until in 1974 Soeharto recruited
him to return to Indonesia as part of his drive to industrialize and develop the country. Two years
later he made Industri Pesawat Terbang Nurtanio (IPTN) which in 1985 changed its name into
Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara.
B.J. Habibie was appointed as Minister of Research and Technology in 1978 but still continued
to play an important role in IPTN. Under his leadership, IPTN has developed really well. As a
minister he also made technology in Indonesia continued to grow . That’s why he continuously
become a member of Indonesian Cabinets for over 20 years from 1978 until 1998.
In Soeharto’s era he was a member of the Golkar Organisation. While serving in government,
Habibie was also elected as the first Chair of the Indonesian Assasiation of Muslim Intellectuals
(ICMI) in 1990, until in 1998 Soeharto suggested that the next vice president should have
competence at science and technology. He did not mention anyname but its obvious he had
Habibie in mind. The suggestion received badly causing the Rupiah to fall. Despite this, Habibie
was elected as Vice president in March 1998.
On may 1998 just two months being a vice president, Soeharto announced his resignation and
then replaced by Habibie until 1999. B.J.Habibie also known for a controversial decision for a
referendum of East Timor . The referendum was held on 30 August 1998 and East timor become
independent in 2002
Despite the controversy, B.J.Habibie is still one of the most important people in Indonesia.
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie passed away in September 11 2019 because of heart failure at Gatot
Soebroto Hospital. His name will always be remembered by many people
