Assignment 3, Non-Verbal Communication

Identify or describe the meanings of the non-verbal cues given in the video. Make your personal
comment about the communication made by the communicators.

The non-verbal cues in the video start when the customer wants to order and it is
observed that he has a speech difficulty. He raised his three fingers to show that he wants three
order of something then the cashier or the staff started to tell flavors and jump to conclusion that
it is the flavor that the customer wants. After that, it is clearly shown that the mentioned flavor of
the cashier is not the right order because the customer is waving his pointing finger and his hands
with the combination of his facial expression which means “no” or he was trying to say, “that is
not my order”. But the cashier did not pay attention and continue to guess the order. The next
non-verbal cue that was used by the customer is doing a hand gesture that looks like a gun and he
pointed his hand in his head and used it three times. This means that he wants to order three shots
and the cashier understand it. Suddenly, all the flavors that was mentioned by the cashier in the
video was considered as the order but the customer only wants to order three shots. In the end of
the shop scenario, the customer pays all the products.
This actively demonstrate that the communication occur was ineffective because both
parties fail to deliver or process the message. The cashier should pay full attention to the non-
verbal cues of the customer. The problem here is that the cashier is jumping to conclusions and
maybe distracted because there might a customer that will come in and time is very important to
him that’s why he wants to quickly process the order. The distractions can inhibit the cashier
from offering his undivided attention and may keep him from fully grasping what the customer
is trying to say that leads to misinterpret the information. In the side of the customer, he should
use non-verbal cues that is easier to understand. He can cross his arms across his chest and
slightly shake his head as a “no” and smile while nodding his head as a “yes” to easily
understand his respond.

On the other hand, the next scenario is about the communication between the customer
and the man that wants to cross to the lane but he cannot see the stoplight because of his
impaired eyesight. This scene also shows that they have an ineffective communication because
there was noise in communication that bars the effective process of communication between the
sender and receiver. The noise that is presented is the physiological barriers between the parties.
It is a challenge between the characters to understand each other. I can say that the man with the
impaired eyesight is impatient because he wants to quickly cross while the customer tries to used

a verbal cue but is misinterpreted by the receiver because he used a sound that can have different
meanings. I think if he tried to be silent on that time, the man with impaired eyesight may
understand that he can’t speak or he can’t tell him the right time to cross.

Taking everything into account, the characters are having problem in communicating
with each other because of the barrier and the needed understanding and patience that should be
present in the conversation. Furthermore, the attention or focus is also significant when
communicating with others. Additionally, the combination of verbal and non-verbal is significant
to establish a better perspective on the message and it shows that message can be interpret by
different meanings that is why we should use the right words, facial expression and body
language.
