Flashing or intermittent light be ready for abandon. Continuous siren

and red lights means abandon.

what are the main differences between hydrocarbon and cellulosic fires?

Cellulosic fire (typically wood, paper, fabric) which is

encountered in accommodations and which will take quite a long
time to build up high temperature.

Hydrocarbon fire which can raise maximum temperature within

seconds, especially jet fire (hydrocarbon fire under pressure from
the well which carries abrasive and mineral can cause severe
damages.

How would you apply an anti-foulant coating?

Anti foul ant paints contains toxic substance which
can impingent the Paint if it is directly applied on the
Painting system and can cause failure to the Painting
System, that’s why Tie coat to be applied before anti
Foul ant paints.

BGAS Grade-1 - MODEL EXAM No: 2

What is an encapsulated area, and how it may be encapsulated?

Production demands are higher and it may be required to blast and paint
in an encapsulated area.(Totally enclosed so as not to interfere with every
day operations. The enclosure may be made of wood or plastic but not
tarpaulin, the purpose being to pose no threat or hazard to working plant or
operations during blasting operations.)

Lead, arsenic, mercury, copper, zinc and tin.

Where are anti-foulants applied on an offshore structure?

Ship hull and platform jacket structure.

Which is currently the most popular PFP used offshore?

Intumescent and cementitious

Name 4 types of anti-foulants & describe how they work.

1,Self polishing or ablative.

2,Soluble matrix type.
3, Contact leaching type or insoluble matrix.
4,Foul ant release coating based on silicone technology.

Foulant release coatings-

1, no toxins, based on silicone technology,

2, Very low surface energy, due to which foulants cannot adhere
properly,
3, the foulants can be easily removed by scrubbing with brush or
sponges and leave the substrate intact,
4, This way is far less expensive.

BGAS Grade-1 - MODEL EXAM No: 2

Contact leaching type or insoluble matrix-

1, binder/bioactive ratio is virtually 1:1.

2, the toxin (cuprous oxide) is in the structure of the film,
3, particles progressively dissolve throughout the film they leave
honey comb structure of non-soluble binder.

Soluble matrix-

1, slightly soluble in the alkaline seawater.

2, binder dissolves, the toxins are released in to the surrounding
seawater.
3, as the binder dissolves the toxins are released to standing
water, these films are generally soft and protect the substrate
from foulant.
4, this system has short life of two years, so dry dock interval are
planned according to that.

Self polishing or ablate.

1, the acrylic polymers with organotin groups form copolymer.

2,This break down due to hydrolysis and the toxin is released in
a controlled manner.
3, slowly erodes ablates, giving a smooth surface beneath.
4, it is expensive and gives longer life.

Name and briefly explain the 2 main types of PFP?

Cementitous material.

Usually applied in a thick layer of between 12 and 15 mm and mainly works

on the insulation principle.

BGAS Grade-1 - MODEL EXAM No: 2

The material is usually Portland cement mixed with low density fillers and
either perlite or vermiculite which function as an insulation medium.

Two types of test slump and density test.

The studs or pins are stud welded or friction welded on to the substrate,
usually before primer application, in diamond pattern 300mm wide.
The mesh, usually plastic coated, is clipped or tied in position so that it
lies approximately half way into the required thickness. The coating is then
applied by spray or trowel.

Material is porous and needs application of sealer coat to prevent

ingress of water when cured.

Common faults cracks, voids, and spalling.

Repairs can be done by cutting with circular disk so that
damaged or faulty materials can be removed, like cross hatch
with a reverse champher to provide a key.

With cementitious coatings, when subjected to fire conditions they must be

replaced, not repaired.

In tumescent epoxies
1, principle - swelling
2, thickness 4 to 15 mm.
3, material 100% volume solid epoxy with high viscosity.
4, it shall be stored around 20degC,
5, some manufacture may permit to allow small amount of ad
solvent to mix and bring the material suitable for spraying
viscosity.
5, base and activators are heated separately and send to the
metering pump with the help of heated lines.
6, metering pump function is to feed the material in correct ratios,
from the metering pump it goes to the mixing unit.
7, the mixer head and the spray gun distance is very short.
8,tip size is 35 thou.

BGAS Grade-1 - MODEL EXAM No: 2

9, synthetic materials mesh.

10, application by spray or trowel.

temperature is around 200 to 250 degc.
12, these materials can be repaired and brought back to require
thickness after exposure to fire.
13, briefly describe how an in tumescent epoxy works?
Intumesces means swelling.

What is meant by the term Hp/A, and what is its significance?

HP/A ratio of the exposed heated perimeter of the steel members

divided by its cross sectional area, the smaller cross section area
heat will absorb very fast and that’s why thicker PFP required.

Name 3 different foulants

Animal foul ants= barnacles, mussels, tubeworms,

bryozoans.
Plant= green algae on the vertical area, brown & red
algae shaded areas.
Micro organism= bacteria, diatoms, moulds.

What does a stand by man and a radio man do?

These are a requirement that there be a Standby man at the point of vessel
entry in cause of emergency with all vessel entry permits.

While working on over side a Radio man must be in attendance, in radio

contact with a standby boat.

What are the regulations governing earthing of equipment offshore?

Blast cleaning and spraying equipment shall be continuously electrically

bonded from the nozzle to the surface being painted and backwards from
the nozzle to the compressor which shall be earthed.

What is the meaning of fire rating H-120?

Those divisions formed by decks and bulkheads which comply with the
following:

They shall be constructed of steel or other equivalent material.

They shall be suitably stiffened.

They shall be so constructed as to be capable of preventing the passage of

smoke to flame after 120 minutes exposure to a hydrocarbon fire test.

They shall be so insulated that, if the designated exposure faces are

exposed to the hydrocarbon fire test for two hours, the average
temperature on the unexposed face will not increase at any time during the
test by more that 139OC.

Name 4 factors which could influence the choice of thickness of a PFP?

1 fire likely to occur in the vicinity (especially offshore highest

risk is hydrocarbon and also cellulosic fire in accommodation
modules.
2, the core temperature at which steel will lose half
Of its strength around 400degC.
3, the length of time at which PFP has to maintain
the core temperature of the steel, usually up to
2hours for the evacuation of personnel.
4, HP/A ratio of the exposed heated perimeter of the Steel
members divided by its cross sectional area, the smaller cross
section area heat will absorb very fast and that’s why thicker PFP
Required.
What is the meaning of fire rating J-15 H-60?

J15/H 60 means jet fire last for 15 minutes ESDV valve will be
operated by reducing the pressure and producing hydrocarbon
fire which will last for 60 minutes.

Briefly describe how intumescent epoxy works.

In tumescent PFPS used this property of swelling along with

other to perform its function

Steps involved are as follows.

when subject to flame the resins in intumescent epoxy start to
soften there by releasing acids.

these acids react with spumific materials releasing non

combustible gases such as CO2, NH3, H2O vapour.

these gases cause the material to swell to many times to its

original thickness.

these materials form a carbonaceous char which insulates the

steel under protection.

as the char progressively ablates, it exposes new surfaces to

react in exactly the same way.

it prevents rise in temperature and avoids access of air and so

avoid combustion, thus retarding the temperature rise of the
steel.
