Research
Based on Application of
Research Method
Research Method

● A research method is a strategy

used to implement that plan.
● Research methods refers to the
tools that one uses to do
research
Three Types of Research Based on Research Method

01 Pure Research

02 Applied Research

03 Action Research
Pure Research
● Also known as “basic” or “fundamental”
research.
● Conducted without any practical end-use
in mind.
● It is driven by gut instinct, interest,
curiosity or intuition, and simply aims to
advance knowledge and to
identify/explain relationships between
variables.

Applied Research

● The study and research is used in

business, medicine and education in
order to find solutions that may cure
diseases, solve scientific problems or
develop technology.
● Applying the chosen research to societal
problems or issues
Applied Research

● Applied research “aims at finding a

solution for an immediate problem facing
a society, or an industrial/business
organization, whereas fundamental
research is mainly concerned with
generalizations
Examples

Development of strategies to introduce change

01 in Starbucks global supply-chain management
with the view on cost reduction

02 A study into the ways of fostering creative deviance

amongst employees without compromising respect
for authority
Action Research
● Action research is inquiry or research in
the context of focused efforts to improve
the quality of an organization and its
performance.
● It typically is designed and conducted by
practitioners who analyze the data to
improve their own practice.
● Action research can be done by
individuals or by teams of colleagues.

Research
Based on Purpose of Research
Four Types of Research Based on Purpose

Descriptive Explanatory

Correlational Exploratory
Descriptive

● focuses more on the “what” of the research

subject rather than the “why” of the research
subject.
● descriptive research primarily focuses on
describing the nature of a demographic
segment, without focusing on “why” a certain
phenomenon occurs.
● not cover any investigative details on “why”
the patterns exits
Examples

01 Characteristics of People Buying in a 7/11 Store

02 Attributes of Employees in EDSCI

03 Number of Students Enrolling in BHS

Correlational
● A researcher measures two variables,
understands and assess the statistical
relationship between them with no influence
from any extraneous variable.
● The distinctive feature of correlational
research is that neither of the variable
involved is manipulated.
● POSITIVE CORRELATION, NEGATIVE
CORRELATION AND NO CORRELATION
Examples

01 Level of being educated and the rate of crimes

Stress of organizers and the important guests and

02 events

03 Salary and Marriage

Exploratory
● Conducted for a problem that has not
been studied more clearly, intended to
establish priorities, develop operational
definitions and improve the final research
design.
● Possibilities
● Helps determine the best research design,
data-collection method and selection of
subjects.
Explanatory
● It determines the causes of the
phenomena, and generate a sense of
understanding.
● This makes the research highly structured,
which was lacking in exploratory research.
