CRIMINALISTICS 3 JANUARY 24, 2021

Ballistics (REFLECTION)

The previous discussion tackled about parts of firearm, classification of firearm and further
more. The basic parts of firearm is chamber, extractor, and leed. We also discussed about the anatomy
of the gun that include the parts of revolver and the parts of semi-automatic pistol. There are
classifications of fire arm according to bore; first is rifled bore fire arm. Rifled Bore Firearms are those
that contain rifling inside the gun barrel. Examples are pistols, revolvers, and rifles. Rifling conssist of a
number of helical grooves cut in the interior surface of the bore. The rifling in firearms may be divided
into the following: stype, smith and Wesson type, browning type, colt type, Webley type, and army type.

Another classification is smooth bore firearms. It is those that have no rifling inside the gun barrel from
the breech end up to the muzzle of a firearm. Ex. Shotguns, Muskets. A gun with a smoothbore that
shoots cartridges that contain "shot" or small metal pellets as the projectiles. The internal diameter of
the smooth bore gun is smooth and have no grooving inside the barrel. Examples of this is shot guns and
other country made fire arms. Firearms also have different mechanical operations to include single
action, double action, gas operated, single action semi automatic, blowback, automatic, semi-automatic,
and recoil operated.

Firearms identification is actually a form of tool mark identification where the firearm, because
it is made of a material harder than the ammunition components, acts as a tool to leave impressed or
striated marks on the various ammunition components that come into contact with the firearm. Tool
mark produced on the cartridge cases will be in two basic form: striated action marks, and impressed
action marks. The term "cartridge" evolved from about the turn of the sixteenth century. The earliest

small arms ammunition or cartridge consisted of a pre-measured charge of powder wrapped in paper.
Technically speaking, the term ammunition refers to a group of cartridges or to a single unit or single
cartridge-meaning a completed unfired unit consisting of a bullet, cartridge case, gunpowder and
primer. The term may also refer to a "single round". There are also different part of a cartridge; bullet,
cartridge case and gun power. There are also different types of cartridge: pin fire, rim fire, and center
fire.
