Plant and Animal Cell Structure

Learning Objective

Differentiate plant and animal cells according to presence or absence of certain organelles.
(S7LT-IId-4)
Sub-Tasks:
1. Identify the parts of the plant and animal cells;
2. Compare and contrast the structure of plant and animal cell;
3. Construct a cell model with organelles; and
4. Suggest ways on how to take good care of our body.
Time Allotment: 2 hours

Key Concepts

● All organisms, big or small, are made up of cells.


● Cell organelle are small membrane-bound structures that perform specific functions that
make life possible.
● Prokaryotic cells lack distinct nuclei and have few organelles that are not membrane-
bound.
● Eukaryotic cells are complex and highly organized,due to the presence of
numerous and varied structures called organelles.
● Nucleus, cell membrane and cytoplasm are the 3 basic parts of the cell.
● Nucleus controls all the activities of the cell.
● Cell membrane encloses the cell and separates the internal organelles from its
sorroundings. It also controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell. The plasma
membrane allows entry of materials needed by the cell and removes those which are not
needed.
● Cytoplasm is consists of a jelly-like substance where all the other parts of the cell are
located. It does not include the area where the nucleus is located. Many different
activities of the cell occurs in the cytoplasm.
● Animal cell is a eukaryotic cell that has no cell wall. It is enclosed by the cell membrane
and they have centrioles use for cell reproduction. It has irregular shape.
● Plant cells have cell walls and chloroplasts that are not found in animal cells. The cell
wall is made of rigid material that forms the outermost part of plant cells. This gives shape
and protection to the cell. Chloroplast functions in carrying out photosynthesis. Plant
cell has regular shape.
● Vacuoles are present in both plant and animal cells. In plant cells, they have large vacuole
and normally occupy more than half of the cell space. They play an important role in
storing nutrients and increasing cell size during growth and it stores water, thereby
maintaining rigidity to cells and provide support for plants to stand upright. While small

vacuoles in animal cells are called vesicles. They serve as storage of water and food. It
also functions in the excretion of waste materials. They also contain toxic substance to
serve as defense mechanism against animal and plant eaters.

2. Complete the Venn diagram using the following words in the box by filling up
the cell organelles found only in plant cell and found only in animal cell. Then,
at the common center, write the cell organelles found in both cells.

Activity 3. The Amazing “Cell Model”

Construct a model of a plant cell or animal cell using recycled or indigenous materials
or any available materials found at home or in your locality. Label the cell organelles
properly. To score your activity please refer to the rubric below. After constructing the
model, answer the following questions. (Note: Attach a picture of your cell model or make a
drawing of it.

Reflection

Since the start of the year 2020, we had experienced the greatest challenge of global
health crisis the COVID-19, an infectious disease. People were threatened due to the
increased of the number of deaths not only in the Philippines but in the whole world. With
this, we need to wear face mask and face shield in public places ,wash our hands regularly,
but most of all we have to take good care of our body because taking care of our body means
taking care of every single CELL inside.

1. Similarities : Both plants and animal cells have cytoplasm, vacuoles, mitochondria,nucleus, golgi
apparatus and endoplasmic reticulum and cell membrane, lysosomes.
Differences : Plants have cell wall that sorrounds the cell membrane, while animal cell have cell
membrane alone.
Plants have one large vacuole for storage and maintain the shape of the
cell, while animal cells have many smaller vacuoles.
Plant cells have several chloroplast to maximize photosynthesis, while
animal cells don’t have. Animal cell have centrioles for cell reproduction.
