Donato di Niccol di Betto Bardi, popularly known as Donatello, was born in 1386 in the city of
Florence in Italy, and died on December 13, 1466. He got his name from his father, Niccolo di
Betto Bardi and also his mother’s name is Orsa Bardi. He is regarded as the founder of modern
sculpture and was the first to sculpt in bronze. He is regarded as the most influential artist of
the 15th Century, influencing almost every painter and sculptor that came after him,
particularly those working in Florence and Padua. He was a master of sculpture in both marble
and bronze. He used his talent and unique style to produce imposing and lifelike sculpture.

DONATELLO'S EARLY YEARS:

Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, or mostly known as Donatello. This man left an extravagant
mark on the renaissance period with his contributions in art and the future of art itself. His first
academic setting was at a goldsmith's shop, where he showed interest in manipulating metals
and other substances. He then later worked for his mentor, Lorenzo Ghiberti, for a short while
and this is where he was introduced to fame. Brunelleschi departed for Rome after losing a
competition to Lorenzo Ghiberti. He went to Rome to study classical arts and Donatello tagged
along. The two became friends and professional rivals.

DONATELLO'S MIDDLE YEARS:

His success continued throughout his middle years. In these years he made illustrious works
such as Annunciation, Singing Gallery and Feast of Herod. He began a partnership with architect
and sculptor Michelozzo. The two collaborated on the tombs of Pope John XXIII and Cardinal
Brancacci. Donatello's innovations in burial chambers became a big influence in tomb makings.

DONATELLO'S ADVANCED AND LAST YEARS:

He spent 1443-1453 in Padua, where he completed one of his greatest and most admired works
, the Gattamelata. Donatello also completed the high altar of st. Antonio and 7 other life sized
sculptures, which includes the Madonna and the Child and The Crucifixion. By 1455, Donatello
returned to Florence and completed the famous work Mary Magdalen. The artist died on
December 13, 1466. The work "The 2 Bronze Pulpit/The Pulpit of San Lorenzo/The Passion
Pulpit" was his last work and was finished by his pupil, Bertoldo di Giovanni. As of this day
Donatello's talent remains in our history.

SOME FAMOUS WORKS OF DONATELLO

-MARY JOY DELOS REYERS:

- DAVID

David is a bronze statue style in a year of 1440s. The bronze David is renowned for being the
first large scale freestanding nude statue since antiquity. It depicts David, in the story of David
and goliath, holding the sword of his defeated enemy and with his foot on goliath's severed
head. David is completely naked, apart from a laurel topped half boots. The well-proportioned
and delicate figure of the statue beats a contrast with the giant sword on his hand perhaps
indicating the assistance of God in his achieving the incredible feet. Donatello also produced a
marble statue of David in gothic style earlier but it is nowhere as famous as this work which is
being considered his most influential work and his greatest masterpiece. It is resides in the
Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.

- PENITENT MAGDALENE

Penitent Magdalene is a wood statue type in a year of 1453-1455. This work of Donatello
emphasizes the humanity of biblical characters. In his sculpture the Mary Magdalene appears
penitent for her sins, with the expression of asking forgiveness. And now the sculpture of this
can be found on the Museo dell'Opera Del Duomo. Penitent Magdalene present as a relatable
figure to be pitied and admired on a human level as well as idolized on a saintly level. The work
was also painted, adding an unprecedented level of detail and realism, especially seen in the
whites of the eyes and the pupils. Donatello veered from legend and preconceived notions
about his subject and depicted Magdalene as an old, starving woman rather than the more
common young and beautiful nude fed by angels.

- SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST

St. John the Evangelist is an Italian Renaissance marble sculpture created by Donatello from
1408 to 1415. The colossal marble piece was placed initially at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
in Italy. Donatello portrayed St. John as a noble and introspective prophet. Donatello portrayed
the apostle as an aging prophet holding the bible. He is seated in traditional flowing robes that
hide his body but show off a gracefully sculpted arm and torso. This statue represents one of
the clearest examples of how perspective is achieved.

-WARREL GUZMAN:

- SAINT GEORGE

It is a marble type in a year of 1415-1417. This statue is considered his earliest work which
displays his radical move away from the prevalent Gothic style. In this, Donatello showcases
deep knowledge of the human figure at rest and brilliantly captures the tension between
repose and action. It is not only among Donatello’s masterpieces but also had a profound and
long lasting influence on Renaissance sculpture. He was commissioned to carve the sculpture of
the patron saint, which is the St. George, for the exterior of the church of orsanmichele in
Florence, but was moved in the 19th century to a museum. Saint George is sculptured as a
young, brave, determined and strong man in armor.

- SAINT MARK

Saint Mark is a marble style and the year of it was known in 1411-1413. Donatello's saint mark
is also known for its natural pose, detailed realism and a much more naturalistic style than the
prevalent in the age. It has an approximate height of seven feet and nine inches. It was
commissioned to him by the linen guild. Donatello's Saint Mark was the first of three pieces
completed for exterior niches of the church of Orsanmichele. It is now located on the
Orsanmichele church.

- THE FEAST OF HEROD

It was created by Donatello in 1427. It is one of the Donatello's earliest relief sculptures and his
first bronze relief. It depicts an executioner presenting the severed head of John the Baptist
after Salome asked king Herod Antipas for John's head on a platter. The sculpture means the
episode in the Gospels following the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. The sculpture is 60 by 60
centimeters.

-ANIKA MASIGLAT:

- ZUCCONE

Zuccone is a marble type and in a year of 1423-1425. Donatello created five statues for the
campanile or bell tower of the Florence cathedral in Italy. It is considered as one of the most
important marble sculptures of the 15th century. Even though it is not known with certainty,
many believe that it depicts the biblical figure Habakkuk which is why it also known as the
statue of the prophet Habakkuk. The popular name for the statue zuccone known or means
pumpkin and it comes from the fact that its figure is bald. This statue is known for it's realism
and naturalism. Also it said that is was Donatello's favorite and he used to swear by the
sculpture, "By the faith I place my Zuccone". Zuccone is now located in the Museo dell'Opera
del Duomo.

- JUDITH AND HOLOFERNES

Judith and Holofernes is the bronze sculpture was made by Donatello at the end of his career.
This was made in 1457 to 1464. This statue was commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici as a
decoration for the fountain in the garden of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi. This masterpiece
depicts that assassination. It is remarkable for being among the earliest freestanding bronze
Italian renaissance statues. The sculpture is located on Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte.

Donatello was commissioned to create this sculpture for the duomo in florence in around the
time of 1433. this work is nicknamed as the " singing gallery ". he carved the dancing children in
simple garments. this work of his measures 3.48 x 5.70 meters.

- Equestrian statue of Gattamelata

This statue was completed between 1447 to 1450. This work of Donatello is located in the
piazza del Santo, Padua, Italy. This is the bronze statue of the Venetian condottiere Erasmo da
Narni who served the republic of Venice which ruled Padua at that time, was portrayed. It was
popularly known as the name "gattamelata". This was made to show the sign of gratitude and
respect after erasmo of nami's death in 1433.

- Saint Louis of Toulouse

He started working on this statue around 1421 to 1425. This bronze work of his goes to many
phases before finally being coated in bronze. He created his first gilded bronze sculpture as a
commission from the Parte Guelfa. It has measure of 2.26 m high and 0.58 m wide. This
sculpture has the shimmering feel due to the various techniques that Donatello used in the
process of making this. This statue is unique because the material used was an alloy metal of
bronze. He used the piecing technique to put Saint Louis together since it was a large sculpture.
And the lost waxing technique used in alignment with the alloy made it possible for Donatello
to bring out the shimmering effect.

- Pazzi Madonna

This relief sculpture of Donatello was made around 1425 to 1430. The sculpture shows the
Virgin Mary is shown three-quarter-length, holding the Christ Child in her arms. It was originally
produced for the private devotion in the palazzo pazzi della. It expresses the tenderness and
intimacy.

highly influential artist worldwide. His works were truly magnificent and it brings out a new
and different perspective when it comes to understanding his works. His admirable works
