David (1440-1460 Bronze)

- Donatello’s landmark work - one of the greatest sculptural works of the early
Renaissance
- The first freestanding bronze which means it is unattached to a support and
the first nude statue of a male in the classical sculptures of ancient Greece.
- The nude sculpture of David raised a dispute between the artists due to the
sexual connotations
- The work was commissioned by Cosimo de’Medici for the Palazzo Medici in
the year 1440 and was finished in 1460
- It was originally placed on top of a pedestal in the center of the courtyard in
the Palazzo Medici, so the viewer would be looking up at it from below.
- The statue’s pose is graceful and feminine. He is depicted with an expression
that suggests purity, youth, and innocence.
- Donatello's David is revolutionary since it is extremely realistic and a prime
example of Renaissance naturalism
- Donatello's David is now kept in the Bargello Museum in Florence
David is also a youth, inaassociate ni Donatello si David as young, heroic innocent
and virtuous. Since David appears to be so young, his muscles have barely
developed to hold the large sword. David’s body frame appears in a graceful position
standing on top of the decapitated goliath’s head that implies that his victory over his
larger enemy is due to God’s assistance.
Penitent Magdalene
- Penitent Magdalene, a polychrome wooden sculpture of Saint Mary
Magdalene by Donatello is thought to have been inspired by the Bishop of Florence
- Carved around the time of 1453-1455 after Donatello suffered a prolonged
illness in Padua
- The piece was received with astonishment for its outstanding realism which
gave a significance to the Magdalene art work
- Mary Magdalene had committed sin living as a prostitute. In Donatello’s
sculpture she appears penitent for her sins with a pleading expression. Therefore,
she is depicted as skinny and haggard figure with sunken eye, protruding
cheekbones and untidy hair. The Magdalene is also seen in hand position in prayer
however her hands does not touch each other.
- It is now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy

Michelangelo (1475-1564)
- Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarotti Simoni
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarotti Simoni or simply known as "Michelangelo"
- Born on March 6, 1475, in the Caprese, Republic of Florence [Italy] and died on
February 18, 1564.
- Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet.
who had an unmatched impact on the evolution of western art
- Greatest living artist
Many of his works in painting, sculpture, and architecture are among the most well-
known in existence. He was regarded as the "greatest living artist in his lifetime, and
ever since then he has been believed to be the one of the finest artists of all time.
- Side effect of Michelangelo's fame
is that his career was more thoroughly documented than any other artist at the time.
He was the first Western artist to have his biography published while he was still
alive.
- Michelangelo considered himself to be primarily a sculptor.
Michelangelo did not want to be known as a painter, and he would probably be
offended if you referred to him as a painter first, rather than a sculptor, it is also
because he had to put his sculpture career on hold to paint frescoes, as ordered by
the pope at the time.
- Most famous works (Frescoes, David, & Pieta)
The most famous painting is Frescoes, which is the iconic depiction of Adam's
creation from Genesis that can be seen on the ceiling of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel
(1508-12).
Among Michelangelo's most famous sculptures are David (1501), which is now kept
in the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, and
the Pieta (1499), which is now located in Vatican City's St. Peter's Basilica

Pieta (1498-1499)
Hello, today I will be discussing another famous sculpture by Michaelangelo called
Pieta or La Pieta, which means pity or compassion. pieta is a theme of Christian art,
ang ibig sabihin po nito ay isang sacred o sagradong sculpture na kung saan
ginagamitan ito ng tema at imahe na galing sa kristiyanismo
Depiction of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ, ito po ay isa sa
mga masususing pangyayari sa buhay ni Virgin Mary. Kinilala din po itong bilang
seven sorrows of mary, in which were the subjects of catholic devotional prayers.
The subject matter was one which would have been known by many people, but in
the late 15th century it wqs depicted in artworks more commonly in France and
Germany than Italy.
In 1497, a cardinal named Jean de Billheres commissioned Michaelangelo to create
nya.
• He carved La Pieta by using Carrara marble, which is the "most perfect" block he
used it means po na ang block ng carrara marble na ginamit na dito sa pieta ay ang
pinakamagandang bloke na nagamit nya at mas maayos ang pagkakagawa nya dito
unlike sa ibang statue na nagawa nya.
• Widely represented in both painting and sculpture, the resulting work, la pieta
would be so successful that it helped launch Michaelangelo's career unlinke any
previous work he had done, it means that his work, pieta helped him a lot especially
in his career, isa rin po itong tagumpay para maging successful ang kanyang career
unlike po sa ibang gawa nya.
• One of the most poignant visual expressions, in her utter sadness and devastation,
she appears to be accepting of what has transpired while still feeling pain and
devastation. The Virgin and the Christ, who both preserve a sweet tenderness
despite the tragic nature of the scene, which demonstrate Michaelangelo's mastery
in sculpting.
• Michaelangelo's pieta has inspired emotion, faith and imitation, he was deeply
relegious, and the pieta is an expressive piece that was clearly by his deep and
abiding faith and through its elegant depiction of the Virgin Mary and Christ.
