Independence Day (2016)
In the beginning of the movie when they are on the moon and the drill begins tipping
over there is force, momentum, acceleration, and collision all happening. At the beginning as it
begins to fall to the side there is a large for that it took to get it to start falling the way that it did.
The momentum then comes from the force that it is falling with and the mass of the object. At
the same time, it is accelerating because of the gravitational pull that the moon will have on this
object speeding up the acceleration. If it wasn’t for the spaceship, it would have made a collision
with the ground which would have been the only force stopping it.
Because of the spaceship being on the other side having time to slow down the fall and
creating a collision with the drill at the same force it can stop the fall. The momentum of the
spaceship must be the same to stop the drill from falling and more to push it the opposite way.
Another thing that is important is the acceleration of the spaceship pushing against the mass of
the drill is less, so its force and acceleration must equal the mass to be able to push it in the
opposite direction. As you can see the collision from the spaceship pushing into the drill brings it
back to an upright position.
In the scene where they are going to the moon in jets, they would have to have big
enough engines to accelerate through our atmosphere and make it to the moon. Now I understand
that the movie is fictional, but I do not see that the engines are large enough to have that type of
force and acceleration. The jets would have to be traveling at 5,364 kph to reach the moon safely.
This is also assuming the moon is at an ideal distance of 386,243 km away. Most Air Force jets
go around 3,000 kph and have enough fuel to take them around 6,000 km.
When Liam Hemsworth is bouncing the ball within his cabin, I found it interesting that
the ball bounced the same way it would on earth except they are on the moon which has a less
gravitational pull. If he would have not caught the ball on the way back up it would have hit the
roof of his quarters because the gravitational pull is less than that on earth. This brought me to an
interesting thought of playing basketball on the moon where you would have to make the playing
area bigger because it would be easier to jump and slam dunk. Also, if you were able to dribble a
basketball on the surface of the moon you better stop it because if you didn’t it would just
continue going up into the air.
The atmosphere of the moon is rising into orbit which would require force and
acceleration from an outside force. This also reminded me of a tornado affect where there is a
pull from the air, and it creates large amounts of circling acceleration.
Another interesting thing that happens in this film is the wormhole that opens and brings
in the new spaceship. A wormhole is an interesting topic, and many factors can go into it. Firstly,
a wormhole is a something that has been hypothesized could be traveled from one side of a
galaxy to another, however it has never been tested or proven. The problem with wormholes is
the gravitational pull that they have would swallow up all the mass and block any passage
through it because of the narrow gap in the middle. Obviously within this film the alien ship was
able to pass through the other side of the wormhole and make it to the moon cutting down its
travel time and distance. Wormholes are still a very theoretical thing, but if proven could change
all our lives.
When they shoot the laser at the alien spaceship the gun shooting it has a recoil to it that
will fire the laser at a certain speed towards the ship. The recoil will equal the amount of force
given off by the beam that was shot. Also the mass that is behind the laser must be able to
withstand the force given off.
Another showing of acceleration and force came after they took off from earth back to
the moon after picking up a few passengers. The aircraft that they are flying in must create force
off of the ground and accelerate to start its flight. Then after it is flying he talks about using the
power drive which will feed the engine more force and acceleration to break the atmosphere and
make it to the moon.
Something I found interesting was the alien spaceship that fired its own laser at the space
station on the moon. It would have also had a recoil that sent it backwards with the force that it
emitted. Obviously within the movie it stood still, but if it was scientifically accurate the force of
the laser would have sent it backwards. The reason for this being that it is accelerating and
pushing back on the ship.
On the other hand, when the aliens begin drilling into the ocean it would push back on the
ship also creating a “recoil”, but the ship has dug its feet into the ground pushing against the
recoil which would keep it from pushing back on it.
In one scene of this film the aliens create their own gravitational field pulling everything
up into the sky, and then sent everything back down. One quote from this scene is, “If it goes up,
it must come back down” this reminded me of an equal and opposite force. So once these things
were pulled up into the sky, they were sent back down with the same force. It was also
interesting to think that the gravity could be turned on and off like that. Imagine If we were able
to just lose gravity whenever we chose to.
Also, about the drill going into the ocean cutting into our core. I thought it was interesting
how he said, “they are going for our magna core”. What he meant by this is in the middle of
earth we have a core that is made of magna, and without it the planet is nothing. If the earths
inner core was to cool down it would have a lot of bad effects on the planet. One if which would
be our magnetic field would fail to protect us from the harmful particles from the sun. Another
thing that is interesting is that there would be fewer volcanic eruptions because the plates in the
mantle would not rub together any longer.
Another thing I saw was the sphere that made its way onto the planet and is being
detected by the mothership as a problem. The way that it is being tracked is by the electro-
magnetism that it is giving off. The mothership can see the magnetism signature given off. The
bomb that they are moving into position is created by the radio truck that give off an equal
magnetism signature that will lure the mothership towards it. Now the mothership obviously has
a strong interaction with the magnetism signature that will bring it towards each other.
I think that these aliens in this movie are way more common as to what I figured that real
aliens would look like and exactly what I figured they would try to do to our planet. I liked how
they brought in the hive aspect of it and showed that they had to beat to queen b of the hive.
Also, a lot of these sequel movies don’t do a great job going together but I thought this one did a
great job of bringing old and new elements into this movie. I also felt as though there were many
different physic aspects within this film that I was able to find. Specifically, a lot of instances of
acceleration, mass and force. Mainly coming from all of the gunfire and flights within the film.
