What I Learned from Midterm Class In IMC

I have several learnings that I get from Midterm Class in IMC. First, I learned how to
find the safest place to get away from danger and to locate the safety equipment like
Immersion suit, life jacket, life boat, life ring, Thermal Protective Aid, etc. I also
learned a lot of ships nomenclature and fittings like galley that compartment of a ship
where food is cooked and prepare, cabin is room for seafarers that were you can
take a rest. And deck is a permanent covering over a compartment or a hull of a ship
and lastly, the bridge is a room of platform of a ship from which the ship can be
commanded. Inside the ship, we need also to provide the neatness and cleanliness
just like in our own home to avoid getting sick. And I also learned that in every
emergency situation there is a different task of every officer and non-officer aboard in
ships. I also learned that in every different ship has its purpose and has its own
usage. Here are some examples of ships that are familiar to us. First, Log Ship this
ship is a type of cargo ship and its function is to transport logs and lumbers. Then,
Bulk ship are type of ship that transport cargoes and bulk quantities. Also, General
Cargo Ships this is the type of ship that use to transport cargoes from one place to
another like furniture, clothes, foods, etc. Next example is Roll-On/Roll-Off Ship
(RORO) is a designed ship that carry wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks and semi-
trailer trucks, trailers and railroad cars can drive on and off of the ship on their own
wheels through vehicle platform. Lastly, Container Ship is a type of ship that built to
accommodate and transport huge amounts of cargo. I have learned that being a
seafarer we will face several risks while we are boarding in a ship. I have learned
that being seafarer we need to be friendly with our co-workers to know and
familiarize the different cultures and the different language for good communication
with them. Before I had not yet known that there is a lot of job opportunities of being
seafarer but now, I learned that I can be a Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy,
Ship Operation and Management and soon. I also learned the different kinds of
terms in ships dimension like baseline, amidship and lent overall. I have also
acquired the knowledge about the MARPOL or Marine Pollution on how it is
developed or started by International Maritime Organization or IMO to minimized the
pollution of oceans and seas like dumping, oil and air pollution. I also acquired the
knowledge about summary of MLC or Maritime Labor Convention how it is widely
known as the “Seafarers’ Bill of Rights”. I have also learned that MLC or Maritime
Labor Convention covers almost every aspect of work and life on board like
minimum salaries, hours of work or rest, payment of salaries, on board medical care,
food and catering, and accommodation. And I also learned the UNCLOS or United
Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This UNCLOS is an international
agreement for the rights and responsibilities of nations and their use of world’s
oceans. I also learned about COLREG or International Rules for Preventing
Collision. COLREG function is for the rules of navigation that is to be followed by
ships and other vessels at sea. This is also prevented collision between two or more
vessels.
