14. Valve Mechanism and Camshaft
14.1 Valve mechanism
14.1.1 Description of valve mechanism
‘The valve mechanism consists of valve tappets (11) ofthe piston type
moving in separate guide blocks (7) of east iron, tubular push rods (4)
‘with ball joints, nodular castiron rocker arms (3}journalled on arocker
arm bearing bracket (18), and a yoke (14) guided by a yoke pin,

14.1.2 Dismantling of valve mechanism.
Hl Remove the covers of the valve mechanism and camshaft
from the eylinder concerned.
1 Tum ne crankshatt toa postion where the valve tappet rollers
ofthe valves are on the base eirle ofthe ear.
Unscrew the nuts (1) and remove the rocker arm bearing
bracket (13) from the eylinder head.
Remove the retainer rings (2) and rocker arms (3). To remove
the retainer rings, use pliers A40 DIN 5254.
Remove necessary pipes.
El Remove the push rods (4) and the protecting sleeves (5).
EZ Unscrew the nuts (6) and remove the guide block (7)
El Remove the cover (8) and the guiding pin (10). An M6 screw
‘can be used to remove the pin,
EZ Remove the valve tappet (11) and dismantle by removing
‘the bearing journal (12). Before dismantling, mark the parts for
‘mounting into the original positions
14.1.3 Inspection of valve mechanism parts
Hl Clear the rocker arm bearing bush and the journal and
‘measure for wear. When cleaning, pay special attention to the oil
holes,
1 Clean and inspect all pars of the valve tappet and guide
block. When cleaning, pay special attention to the angled oil holes,
Measure the vaive tappet bearing bush and the journal as
‘well as the cam roller for wear,
‘Change the O-rings of the cover (8) if they are damaged or hard,
14.1.4 Assembling of valve mechanism.
Tl ubsicate the parts of he valve tappet with clean engine oil
and assemble, Observe the marks for ret poitions
E1insor the valve toppet (11) into the guide block (7) and apply
the guiding pin (10).
EX Mount ne cover.
E Mount the guide block to the engine block and tighten the
nuts 6).

Camshaft
\4.
1 Description of camshaft
‘The camshaft is built up of one-cylindor camshaft pieces (1) and
separate bearing journals (2). The drop forged camshaft pieces have
integrated cams, the sliding surfaces of which are case hardened. The
bearing surfaces ofthe journals are induction hardened. The camshaft
is driven by the crankshaft through a gearing at the driving end of the
‘engine, At this ond the camshaft is equipped with an overspeed trip()
and a helical gear (8) for driving of the speed governor. At the free end,
‘the camshaft has an extension (5) with acam for operating the starting
air distributor,
‘On V-engine, B-bank the camshaft has only an axial baring situated
at the driving end,

14.2.2 Removing of camshatt piece
Hl Remove te camshatt cover, injection pup and guide blocks
from the cylinder concerned.
Unscrew the flange connection screws (3) from both ends of
the camshaft piece by using the tol 4VSNGI7. Th langeconnection
screws are treated with locking compound and ean be used only
Remove the cover (6) stom the starting air distributor and
Tncerew the rocker arm bracket faotening nutoof the eylinders in
which the camshaft i to be axially displaced. Move the pat ofthe
Camshaft locating towards the free end ofthe engine 18 -20 mm in
direction ofthe fee end by sing a suitable lever.
El bisengage the camshatt piece fiom the centerings and f=
{ng pine (@) and remove it aidewaye
The rocker arm beating brackets towards the free end side has to
be removed if he crankshaft is fumed, otherwise there will be
Contac! between the valve and piston
14.2.3 Mounting of camshaft piece
Clean and de
threaded holes.
EZ insert the xing pins (4) with retainer rings, the longer part of
‘he pin in the bearing journal
Mount the comshatt piece (1) on the fixing pin and centering
av either end, then press the camshaft together. Use two or three
‘mounting serews, not the fastening screws, because they are applied
teith locking glue.
Insert the flange connection screws, dry and tighten by us
Ing the tool 4V80G17. The lange connection screws are treated with
locking compound and ean be used only once.
1080 the flange connection surfaces and
Tighten the screws immediately to corect torque since the screws
‘ate lreated with @ locking compound.
