Lab Report effect of the surface Area on the rate of

Dissolution of an Alka-seltzer tablet

1. Data Collection:

Table 1. Time of dissolution (s) and presentation (pieces) of the substance.

Presentation of Alkaseltzer Time Time (s)

One piece 58 seconds 58
Two pieces 57.30 segundos 57,3
Four Pieces 49.46 sec 49
Six Pieces 42.82 sec 42,82
Eight Pieces 36,86 s 36,86
Powder 27,17 sec 27,17

2. Data Analysis:

Taking into consideration the previous data within the dissolution time of the substance and the
number of pieces in which it was presented, we can differ that the following operation will be needed
to determine the rate of reaction:

Mass of the substance

Rate of reaction=
Time

And if we apply this formula to our example of the 1-piece presentation of Alka-Seltzer, we would
have:
3,24 g
Rate of reaction=
58 s

Rate of reaction=0,056 g /s

Taking into account this example of time, the same was done for the rest of the times respectively:

Table 2. Processed data regarding the rate of dissolution of an Alka-Seltzer tablet according to its time and
presentation:

Presentation of Alkaseltzer (pieces) Time (s) Rate of Reaction (g/s)

1 58 0,056
2 57,3 0,057
4 49 0,066
6 42,82 0,076
8 36,86 0,088
Powder 27,17 0,119

Graph 2. Bar graph of the rate of reaction for the dissolution of Alka-Seltzer tablet

3. Conclusions:
a. As the number of pieces of the presentation increases, the time of dissolution
decreases.
b. The relationship between the rate of reaction and the presentation is directly
proportional.
c. The powder takes less time to dissolve than the other presentation because it is the
one with the highest surface area.
