Lanthanide shift reagents

Most Ln3+ complexes are strongly paramagnetic

do not give useful NMR spectroscopic data - unusual shifts and broadened

lanthanide shift reagents – can be added to diamagnetic samples and induce

chemical shift changes via through space interactions
most common reagents are based upon Eu3+ and Pr3+ ions short relaxation times
reducing broadening in 1H NMR spectra
Eu3+ down field shifts and Pr3+up field
coordinated by e.g β-diketonate (acac) ligands
