CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The unemployment rate in the Philippines is believed to increase this year because
of the global pandemic. On April 2021 the unemployment rate records it's all time high of
17.7% or 7.2 million. This is due to the country-wide lockdown and strict travel protocol
implemented in the country. Also, lot of business organizations has forcedly decreased
their labor forces to cope up with the economic recession. But even before the pandemic
took place, there was already an extremely high unemployment rate in the country. The
unemployed Filipinos are considered unemployed based on two criteria, either they don’t
have a job, or they are currently looking for a job.
There are some factors that causes to increase the unemployment rate in the
country. This are as follows; a.) lack of education b.) overpopulation c.) economic
recession d.) lack of opportunity.
If the unemployment rate of the country is caused by several factors, then it has
several effects in the country too. For example, Unemployment is sometimes the cause of
crimes here in the Philippines such as theft. Sometimes unemployment can also
contribute to the mental illness of a person that can lead to depression and anxiety often
leading to suicide. These effects of unemployment may cause several reasons for the
economy to go down cause of how things will look bad for the country.
As unemployment affects so many aspects in our economy, knowing it root cause will
make the government to act quickly to response to the problem.
HYPOTHESIS STATEMENT
Null Hypothesis: The increasing unemployment rate does not affect the economy of the
Philippines.
Alternative Hypothesis: The increasing unemployment rate can cause several problems
that may cause decline in the economy in the Philippines.
Unemployed – this study is significant to the unemployed because this will give them
awareness on how unemployment affects a human being and the whole economy as well.
Employed- this study will provide information that employed people would face if ever
they lose their job in the future.
Students- education is very essential factor on having a good employment in the future.
This study will provide information or options for the students for their plans in the
future.
Future Graduates- Due to lack of opportunities, a lot of graduates are still jobless up to
this date. Sometimes because of not having a job for a very long time, A lot of graduates
have already given up on pursuing their careers.
Economy- the wealth and resources of a country or region, especially in terms of the
production and consumption of goods and services.
Unemployment Rate- The unemployment rate is the percent of the labor force that is
jobless. It is a lagging indicator, meaning that it generally rises or falls in the wake of
changing economic conditions, rather than anticipating them.
Philippines Statistic Authority- The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) logo signifies
its commitment to provide timely and quality statistics necessary for decision making in
all aspects of Filipino life
The unemployment rate in the Philippines is relatively high, several reporters stated
that we are somewhat recovering from the increase during the first month of the
pandemic.
(DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez told reporters, that DTI is proposing to allow businesses to
operate in all alert levels and only adjust the operating capacities for each level to ensure
business continuity and avoid job losses.
In the Philippines, most people want to work or want to have stable jobs. However, job
openings are not in abundant the country's industry and it does not have enough jobs to
offer thus creating an excess in manpower in effect pushes the laborer to go and seek
work abroad. The other unemployment that is present in the Philippines is the
Technological Unemployment. This occurs when there is automation or displacement of
old technology by a new one requiring less workers than before that's why one of the
causes of structural unemployment is technological change (Chand n.d.).
