Year completed: 2017-2018 Number of Pages: 57

The study identified the profile of the RAMON M. DURANO SR.

MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL student in term of their age, gender,

year level, and daily allowance.

This study employed the descriptive experimental design of research

following the survey method. The identified independent variable are the

background characteristics of the students in terms of age, gender, grade level,

and the student’s allowance. The acceptability level of the students on

camotengturon in terms of texture, color, taste, order, size, price, nutritional

content was the dependent variable. The said method has been appropriate for

iii
this kind of research since it is involving with the experimentation and fact-finding

of observable phenomenon.

It was found out that most of the respondents are female, almost all of

their ages fall to the category of 14-15 years old, Majority of the respondents are

grade 9 and grade 11. Two-thirds of the respondents have the daily allowance of

5-15 pesos. Data suggested that no matter what age, gender, grade level of the

respondents, there is no significant relationship between their acceptability level

on CamotengTuron, but the daily allowance matters because it involves

monetary value in buying the CamotengTuron, so there is a need to lower the

price of the said product so that the students can afford it.

This study recommended that in order to help the students build

businesses on their own and help them sustain their monetary needs not just in

school but also in their community. so there is a need to lower the price of the

said product so that the students can afford it.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Rationale of the Study

Sweet potato is a dicotyledonous plant. It is an herbaceous perennial vine,

bearing alternate heart-shaped and medium sized sympetalous flowers. Sweet

potatoes are packed with healthy nutrients including protein, fat, vitamins, amino

acid, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and other minerals. It has a large starchy, sweet

tasting tuberous root. The edible tuberous root is long and tapered with a smooth

skin whose color ranges between, yellow, orange, red, brown and purple. In

addition, medium sweet potato provides over 300% of the recommended daily

intake of vitamin A which play a big role in our eye, bone, and immune system.

In the islands of Pacific Ocean, spreading from Polynesia, Vietnam,

Indonesia, India, Japan, and other Asian countries are large sweet

potatoegrowers and it became a very popular as a food crop. One of the reason

is that they were reliable crop cases in crop failure. In some Asian countries like

Taiwan, Japan, and Philippines and other neighboring countries, sweet potatoes

are featured in different favorite dishes. Unlike China, they used sweet potatoes

as a medicine.

In the Philippines, sweet potatoes locally known as kamote are an

important food crop in rural areas. They are often a stipe among impoverished

families in province. As they are easier to cultivate and cost less than the rice.
14

The tubers are boiled or baked in coals and maybe dipped in sugar and syrup.

Young leaves and shoots are eaten fresh in salads with shrimp taste or fish

sauce. They can be cooked in vinegar and soy sauce and serve with fried fish.

The stew obtained from boiling camote tops is purple-colored and is often mixed

with lemon as juice. Sweet potatoes are also sold as street food in sub-urban and

rural areas. Fried sweet potatoes coated with caramelized sugar and served in

skewers (kamote cue) are popular afternoon snacks. Bread made from sweet

potato flour is also gaining popularity. Sweet potatoes are relatively easy to

propagate, and in rural areas that can be seen abundantly at canals and dikes.

Sweet potatoes are not only an important source of nutrients. The great

thing about it is their versatility, which means it can be incorporated into wide

range of delicious recipes that are easy to make. In connection with this, the

researchers have the courage to conduct this study to empower and inspire the

students to build businesses that may help them have a source of income and

earn money on their own using sweet potatoes as a raw material.

Considering the advantages sought by the sweet potato to the lives of the

Filipino. These is, therefore, a need to conduct a study that could find ample time

to find products from sweet potato that could help the welfare of the Filipino.

However, finding product alone is not enough. One has to gauge the

acceptability of the product among the target receptions. Thus the conduct of this

study.
15

Theoretical Background

This study is premised by the following theories, results scientific

researcher and published articles that could help in scaffolding the structure of

the research.

Students sometimes find difficulties in school not because of the lessons,

projects or quizzes but because of the financial needs and some monetary

issues. Other students cannot sleep at night thinking of “When can I pay for my

monthly contribution?”, “To whom I can borrow money so that I can have a

photocopy for my reviewer?”, “When will I have MY school uniform considering

that I am not paid yet to the dressmaker.”, “My shoes is damaged when can I buy

new one?”, “Maybe I can’t take the exams because I was not able to pay for the

test papers.”, “I will be failed because I was not able to pay for the performance

test.”. As a matured and dependent daughter or son we just mind our problems

and worries by dealing with it alone for we don’t want to add the problems that

our parents are facing than ours.

That’s why our government implement the new basic education curriculum

the Department of Education’s K to 12 basic Education Curriculum, and one of

the major subjects is about Entrepreneurship. It is design for grade 11 and 12

senior high school students. It seeks to uncover the innate entrepreneurial

abilities of the students and have their skills and good judgment in findings

opportunities amidst crisis and turn them into profitable entrepreneurial ventures.

Some entrepreneurial concepts that students can easily follow and possibly apply

at home, in school, and practically everywhere they go. Aided with appropriate

tools and technique, learners are assured to explore possibilities outside the

employed world-being entrepreneur. This is in the connection with the

curriculum’s goal of “Gearing Up for the Future” where students get to choose a

specialization based on their skills and interests. In addition, it seeks to contribute

to the realization of the K to 12 Basic Education Program’s outcome of producing

holistically developed students. More particularly, it will promote

Entrepreneurship and stir up entrepreneurial spirit.

In line with the Department of Education K to 12 Curriculum that intends to

contribute to the fulfillment of one of its goals of promoting entrepreneurship as a

career option and start building businesses among High School Students. This

defies the traditional mindset of getting ready for employment and challenges the

students, teachers, and parents alike to be witness, as entrepreneurship

becomes the catalysts for nation building.

Entrepreneurship has no gender preferences and your age doesn’t even

matter. And nor your poor or rich, what does your social status is. Everyone has

the privilege to build businesses. If someone who has the passion and courage

to try something that’s never been done before, and risk to achieve it.-

Allan…..After the conduct of this study then we will be able to know the

acceptability level of the students in Camoteng Turon thus we will be able to use

all our learnings in Entrepreneurship. We can start building businesses and earn

money on our own. With this maneuvered product Camoteng Turon. Gone are the

days of bothering on where we can get money for our projects so that it can be

passed before the deadlines. Gone are the days and sleepless nights to just
18

have enough fare on going to school. Gone are the days that we go to the school

with large and buggy eyes because of crying for the other night as you don’t have

allowance and don’t or you can’t afford to buy foods. Gone are those days and

nights that your pillow is wet of tears because of crying over night for you have a

debit from a friend to pay with.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method and Design

This studyemployed the descriptive experimental design of research

following the survey method. The identified independent variable wouldthe

background characteristics of the students in terms of age, gender, grade

level, and the student’s allowance. The acceptability level of the students on

camoteng turon in terms of texture, color, taste, order, size, price, nutritional

content was the dependent variable. The said method has been appropriate for

this kind of research since it is involving with the experimentation and fact-finding

of observable phenomenon.

Research Environment

This study would beconducted in Ramon M. Durano SR. Memorial

National High School. The said school is located at Cahumayan, Danao City

Cebu. The topographical characteristics is mostly mountainous and hilly. Ramon

M. Durano Sr. Memorial National High School is one of the public high School in

the Division of Danao that is approximately 16 kilometers away from the heart of

Poblacion, with a total land area of 20 000 square meter.Presently, the school is

compose of 30 teaching staff with 27 teachers, I principal and 2 assistant

principal. The school has 12 section that ranges from 40-45 student across all 6

years’ levels from grade-11 to grade 12. For school year 2017-2018 RMD

SR.MNHS has 654 officially enrolled students. The way of transportation of

students that came from different neighboring barangay such as, Masaba,

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The main instrument employed in this study was a researcher-made

Questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two (2) major parts.

The first part identified the profile of the grade-7 to grade 11 students such

as age; gender; grade level and daily allowance.

The second segment of the questionnaire were a set of questions that

would find out the acceptability level of camoteng turon among high school

students. The respondents would be given the actual product and they will

provide their acceptability rate according texture, color, taste, odor, size, price,

nutritional content.

Before the gathering of data, the instrument would be pre-tested to a

different set of grade-7to grade-11 students in RMD SR. MNHS who are not

include in the actual research respondents in order to determine the validity and

reliability of the contents. The entries in the questionnaires that would turn out to

be difficult to understand in the pre-testing will be properly modified, rephrased,

or corrected by the adviser and the researchers before it was mass reproducted

and fielded among the actual research respondents. The pre-test was only 10

students from senior high.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After the retrieval of the fielded questionnaires, data was arranged,

collated, and consolidated in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel.

25

Data which pertains to the background characteristics of the students\

respondents including gender, age, grade level and daily allowance was

analyzed through descriptive statistics such as frequencies, means, total, range,

weighted means, and percentage.

Weighted mean was utilized to measure the level of acceptability of

Grade-7 to Grade-11 students of the Camoteng Turon in terms of its texture,

taste, color, odor, size, and price.

To test the null hypothesis and determine any significant relationship

existing between the background characteristics of the students and the

acceptability level of the camoteng turon among high school students in terms of

texture, color, odor, taste, size and price. Correlation- coefficient was employed.

Data Gathering

A letter of permission was send to the principal of Ramon M. Durano Sr.

Memorial National High School. The purpose of conducting the research would

be in the letter request. As a data gathering procedure, the researchers would

makea through explanation on the content of the questionnaire and the way in

should be answered and how data must be treated without most confidentially

and secrecy. Questionnaires would be retrieved and data was consolidated,

interpreted and tabulated in a spreadsheet/Microsoft Excel.

In gathering the necessary data, sample product was given to the

respondents to rate the actual product by its taste, texture, color, odor, size, price

and nutritional content and identify its acceptability level.

26

Scoring Procedure

To facilitate better understanding about the data, the following will be

scored based on the 5 points Likert Scale.

Weight Range Category Verbal Descriptions

5 4.20-5.00 SA StronglyAccepted

4 3.40-4.20 A Accepted

3 2.60-3.40 N Neutral

allowance were the respondents’ background characteristics that had a

significant relationship with their level of acceptability on Camoteng Turon . Data

also suggested that the price of the Camoteng Turon should be decreased so

that the students can afford the camoteng turon because majority of the students

of RMD Sr. MNHS has the daily allowance of 5-15 pesos only.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS,CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter discusses the summary of finding on empirical data, the

conclusions of analyzed data, and the recommendations propounded from the

conclusions.

FINDINGS

This section presents the findings in this study based on the descriptive

and inferential statistical analysis of the variables. The following empirical results

were found out:

1.The majority of the respondents were male; A lot of the respondents are aged

14-15 years old. These ages were typical or optimum for grade 7 to grade 8

students. Then a little more than one-eight are 16-17 years old and 12-13 years

old.The one-fifth of the respondents are aged 12 years old and below. And the

six percent of the respondents belonged to the ageclass of 18 years old and

above; In terms of the respondents’ grade level, data revealed that majority of the

respondents are grade 9. More than one fourth of them came from grade 7 and

grade 11 students. And the remaining grade level had a different distribution but

the difference is just small; and for the daily allowance, two-thirds or majority of

the respondents has an allowance that range from Php 5-15.Almost one-fourth or

24 percent of the respondents has a daily allowance of Php 16-25.A pair of

respondents has the allowance of Php 26-35 and a couple of respondents that

has a daily allowance that range from Php 45 and above. And the remaining

single respondent has a daily allowance that ranges from Php 36-45.
42

2. Data revealed that almost all of the respondent “Strongly Accept” the

Camoteng Turon in terms of its texture, color, taste, odor, size and its price.

3.It was found out that only Daily allowance were the respondents’ background

characteristics that had a significant relationship with their level of acceptability

on Camoteng Turon. The other remaining variables namely age, gender, grade

level doesn’t influence on the students Acceptability level on Camoteng Turon.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are reached profoundly:

1. Almost all of the respondents were male; Two-fifths of the respondents aged

14-15 years old; Majority of the respondents came from the grade 9; Almost all or

majority of the respondents have the daily allowance of Php 5-15.

2. Majority of the respondents Strongly Accept the Camoteng Turon.

3. Based on the findings presented, respondents’ gender did not play any

significant relationship with the respondents’ level of acceptability on Camoteng

Turon; Statistical results showed that respondents’ age did not affect their

acceptability level on Camoteng Turon. In other words, regardless of the

respondent’s age, their level of acceptability on Camoteng Turon would not

change; Students year level did not play any significant relationship on the

Acceptability level on Camoteng Turon; Daily allowance greatly influence on their

level of acceptability because data revealed that majority of the respondents has

the daily allowance of the students is 5-15 pesos only and they can’tafford the

price of the product.

43

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the conclusions, the researcher came up with the following

recommendations to the following group of people who were one way or another

or the reason for the conduct of this study.

1. Since respondents’ gender, age, grade level was not an affecting factor to their

level of acceptability of Camoteng Turon, the school administrator could create a

small business using Camoteng Turon as the product, they could freely sell

palatable and nutritious product inside the school premises. The school will be

the one to provide the raw materials (camote, cooking oil, wrapper, sugar, vanilla

and flavoring) and they will be the one to invest money for the capital of the said

business. As involvement for the students, they will be the one to make the

product and sell it for them to earn money and may help them for their studies

and other expenses. Their learnings on their Entrepreneurship subject will be

applied in this endeavor and be able to hone their entrepreneurial skills. This little

business that will be created hopefully soon, can greatly contribute for the

improvement of the school as this will be a source of income, and especially for

the students who have problems or cannot sustain their financial needs in school.

This will serve as a great opportunity for all the students to be more prepared and

globally competitive. This will not only circulate in the school but also in the

community as well.

2.Since the daily allowance of the students greatly influence their acceptability

level on Camoteng Turon, then there would be a need to decrease the price of

the product so that the students or the buyers can afford the product because the
44

majority of the students in Ramon M. Durano Sr. Memorial NATIONAL High

School has the daily allowance of 5-15 pesos only.
