CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The study entitled the correlational study between financial

management and purchasing habits of the selected senior high school
students of Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High School. Purchasing habits
are one of the most desirable ways of dealing with factors that will lead to
financial management. Therefore, financial management depends on the
ability of an individual to manage and take control of their finances or
liabilities to improve their financial decision-making and financial status.

Young people today have a greater obsession with purchasing

dispensable items and have developed an addiction to them. Financial
management practices the youths to balance the increasing range of
unnecessary spending. It also balances the purchasing behavior of a
student and creates budget management and financial control. With this,
the student of Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High School will develop the
essential skills and knowledge when it comes to budgeting, purchasing,
and appropriate costing. Now that the world is more advanced because of
technology including the online shops that are now very popular.

Some students spend a lot and purchase unessential things just

because it is popular or trending, but they do not have enough budget to
spend because they are still studying. They must be financially literate to
know the value of the management on spending money on needless
items. This study focuses on being practical and prioritizing the basic
needs of every day. It provides management learning to the student that
helps them understand their experiences.

12

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Background of the Study

According to Tungsriwong, Pathak, and Temsawat (2016), a

budget is one of financial planning which is aimed at planning by setting
goals and an controlling the plan so that the set target can be achieved. By
comparing actual data with allocated or prepared plans, budget planning
can reveal potential problems and helps control the financial planning to
achieve the goals already set up. Tungsriwong, Pantuak, and Temsawat
(2016) also added that a budget system can also use as a tool for efficient
financial management and for planning in the other aspects of life.

Financial knowledge is one of the aspects that need to be concern

by an individual to manage their finance. Financial is very effective in the
area of budgeting in the process of financial knowledge that also affects
the financial decisions of a person. According to Mouna and Jarboui
(2015), a lack of financial knowledge and skills can result in poor financial
behavior in gathering and digesting all important financial information and
thus, leads to inappropriate financial decisions and achieve less efficient
wealth allocation accordingly.

Insufficient financial knowledge also may affect people’s health

physically, economically, and psychologically because of the difficulties in
their finances (Jorgensen and Savla, 2013). Therefore, many researchers
suggest that the implementation of financial education is one of the best
remedies for proper and effective decisions with all financial resources
available. Financial education could prove to have a powerful effect on the
employees’ behavior through a variation of training and programs which is
provided by their employers (Bayer et al., 2014).

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides an overview of related studies and literature

that support the research that will be conducted. With this, the researchers
aim to gather related information that would further expand the knowledge
of those who will benefit from this.

Related Literature

According Kwahk & Kim (2016), traditional brick and mortar stores
continue to play an important role in purchasing decisions of buyers today.
However, the many benefits of online shopping have created a significant
shift in the way people shop. Not only people can browse their favorite
stores on the internet, but now they can find and follow a vast number of
stores on social media. Due to this shift, users are exposed to more
products than ever before. This creates more opportunities for purchases
to be made, whether the buyer initially intends to make a purchase or not.
One of the main features of social media is that individual users can share
their knowledge and opinions with those who have similar interests and
needs.

It was also pointed out that the young generation rarely practiced
basic financial skills, such as budgeting, developing a regular savings plan
or planning for long term requirements, based on (Birari and Patil, 2014).
Also, in the literature, there are many studies investigating the relationship
between personal financial management behavior and personal
characteristics such as financial knowledge, Ibrahim & Alqaydi (2013).

According to Gangai and Agrawal (2016), the recent years have

witnessed sweeping changes and rapid development in Chinese society.
With a better life quality, more and more Chinese senior high school
students are gaining stronger purchasing power and thus spending more

19

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

time and money on purchasing. Therefore, the research topic of impulsive
buying behavior has been receiving much attention in recent years. Also,
when compared to the normal buying process and impulsive buying is a
kind of activity that takes less time to decide, therefore, it is always
unexpected and unanticipated. Some pervious literature has already
explored the possible effects of lack of self-control exerts on the impulsive
buying. The research shows that there is a significant correlation between
personality traits and consumer impulsive buying. Risk-taking has also
received some attention regarding the impulsive buying of senior high
school students. Risk-taking can occur frequently during the life period of
adolescence and early adulthood since young people tend to be more
adventurous and favor thrilling entertainment.

The importance of financial management for students, first and

foremost, students need to manage their finance wisely. Mohd Rafi (2016)
mentioned in his study that “in fact, one-third of our students are having
student loans, of which more than half are concerned that they will not
able to pay off those loans. Many of them were associated with ineffective
financial behaviors, including low saving, poor record keeping, and some
of the students also involved in credit card debt.” Due to these matters,
students should fix their financial behaviors concerning the fact that they
will have to pay back those loans once they finish their studies and start
working. To manage their financial wisely, students should realize that the
study loans are supposed to be used to finance their study fees,
equipment and materials; not to be wasted on unnecessary stuffs which
may be the main reason of why students cannot practice effective financial
behavior.

Related Studies

Gasiorowska (2015) investigated the effect of money attitudes on

the relationship between income and financial satisfaction. This research
has demonstrated that the subjective perception of objective wealth may
be influenced by different individual distinction variables, for example,
one's love for money, level of desires, or materialistic slants. This study
inspected an effect of attitudes towards money on the connection between
personal net income and family unit income, and its subjective
assessment, measured as financial satisfaction and subjective monetary
prosperity.

Knowledge and financial self-efficacy moderate the relationship

between money attitudes and personal financial management behavior,
this study finds the impact of money attitudes on the personal financial
management behavior and check the moderating effect of financial
knowledge and financial self-efficacy on their relationship. The sample for
this research was young adults (University students) who were also
employed. From five universities where two universities were from the
public sector and three were from private sector 500 respondents were
selected through purposive sampling. Hierarchal Regression and factor
analysis were employed to derive the results. The following are the results
which are generated from this research study. Money attitudes and
Financial Knowledge have a significant positive impact on the personal
financial management behavior of young adults, and financial knowledge
has a positive moderating impact on the relationship of money attitudes &
personal financial management behavior. It was found that 20.9%
Personal Financial Management Behavior is explained by money attitudes
at significance level of 5 %. Financial Self-efficacy has a positive impact on
the personal financial management behavior, and it has positive
moderating impact on the relationship of money attitudes & personal
financial management behavior, Qamar et al., (2016).

Factors affecting the spending behavior of college students, the
purpose of this study was to look at the factors affecting the spending
behavior among college students of Surigao del Sur State University in
Cantilan, the northernmost municipality in the province of Surigao del Sur,
Philippines in terms of attitude, family background, lifestyle, and financial
knowledge. Subsequently, this study was done to better understand how
these factors influenced the spending conduct of college students and
their financial behavior. It is therefore critical that young individuals begin
to learn about finance during adolescence for them to have the best
possible chance to be successful in adulthood. Having a good financial
knowledge is not enough. Success requires a set of healthy and positive
attitude and supportive parents who expect responsible financial attitude,
Bona (2018).

The influence of lifestyle, financial literacy, and social demographics

on consumptive behavior, consumptive behavior is a phenomenon that
affects people’s lives today. Current habits and lifestyles are rapidly changing
in a relatively short time towards becoming more luxurious and excessive, for
example in terms of appearance which can lead to consumptive behavior.
This consumptive behavior tends to incur higher costs because it is no longer
just for fulfilling needs but rather leads to fulfilling wants, according to
Alamanda, (2018). Consumptive behavior can occur because it is influenced
by several internal and external factors. One of the factors that influence
consumptive behavior is self-esteem. Self-esteem is the notion of self globally,
which refers to the overall self-evaluation as an individual, or how people feel
about themselves in a comprehensive sense. This statement is strengthen by
the research conducted by Pulungan and Hastina (2018), explained that
people will buy an item directly if they like it. They will try to get money to buy
items such as bags and clothes to support their appearance so that they look
more attractive and make them satisfied.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This section presents the locale of the study, the researcher design,
respondents of the study, research instrument, gathering procedure, and
statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study will use a quantitative research design, aiming to

understand the correlational study between financial management and
purchasing habits of the selected senior high school students of Dr. Maria
D. Pastrana National High School.

Correlational research design will be used in this study to measure

how the financial management correlate with the purchasing habits of the
selected senior high school students.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High

School here in Mauban Quezon. The respondents that we will be taken is
from the selected senior high school students at Dr. Maria D. Pastrana
National High School.

The researchers will conduct this study in the said school to be able
to measure how the financial management correlate with purchasing
habits, since this is the locale where the researchers encountered the
problem.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents for this research will be the selected senior high
school students of Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High School. The
chosen respondents will provide the necessary information because senior
high school students are more likely to have purchasing habits.

23
Correlational Study Between….

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Population and Sampling

This study's respondents are all SHS students in grades 11 to 12 of

DMDPNHS, since these are the variables specified in the survey, the
respondents will be the selected SHS students. Aside from the fact that
the study's topic is linked. Furthermore, the researchers picked students
from Grades 11 and 12 because of their estimated huge population of 800
students for Grade 11 and 700 students for Grade 12, for a total of 1,500
students, with the requisite population acquired from school personnel
following consultation. That’s why we select 140 students as our
respondents.

Simple random sampling will be used by the researchers to obtain a

population sample of SHS students because it is the most time-efficient
and cost-effective sampling approach for such a huge group. This was
also employed for practicality measures and to raise the degree of
accessibility of prospective sample group members, making the findings
more credible and unbiased.

Research Procedure

The permission of the school principal and the class advisers will
be needed to conduct the study. The researchers will explain the
procedure and purpose of the survey. The questionnaires will be
distributed to the respondents and will collect after the given able time to
answer the questionnaires. The results will compute, gather, analyze, and
interpret.

This study needs the student’s participation, to allow the

researchers to make advancements to avoid any problems that will arise.
The researchers will inform the respondents about the scope of the study
and the participation will completely voluntary.

24

Research Instrument

The researchers prepared a survey questionnaire that served as a

tool for gathering data. Most of the parts in the survey questionnaire used
the likert scale with a maximum of 5 questionnaire that corresponds to the
respondent’s answer. The researchers' instrument was divided into 3
parts. First (1st) Is the demographic profile of the respondents. Then
second (2nd), was the purchasing habits of the selected senior high school
students in terms of; food, clothes, and personal care products. Third (3 rd),
the financial management practices of the selected senior high school
students of Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High School. Lastly, the
significant correlation between financial management practices and
purchasing habits of the selected senior high school students of Dr. Maria
D. Pastrana National High School.

This study will be validated by the practical research teacher and

language teachers to make it in line in the objectives of the study.

Moreover, this study undergoes revision with the help of their teachers and

experts. Afterwards they also asked their practical research teacher to

testify and correct their language and grammar to make it better.

Statistical Treatment

The collected data are treated statistically by using standard

statistical tools. The following statistical procedure were used to interpret

the data gathered from the respondents of the study.

1. Simple Percentage. Appropriate when it is important to know how

many participants gave a particular answer.

One of the local consumers has buying habits when food is the one

that is being tackled. Especially, food buying habits can be done when

consumers deal with activities that can be done at a single time.

Chakraborty (2016) stated that food consumption is a local activity

involving distinct scales of environmental effects. However, there has been

insufficient exploration of the link between eating food as a social and

cultural practice and the worldwide consequences of food consumption.

Food consumption takes a multidisciplinary strategy to connect social

procedures at the family level with the biophysical flows of food products.

According to Cham, T.H., et al., (2015), clothing is an essential item in

every individual’s life as it is considered the second skin of the body. Clothes fall

into the category of physiological needs and fulfill the fundamental need of

protection for all individuals. However, clothing has taken on an additional

function in this modern world. Not only does it serve as a basic human need, but

it also symbolizes an individual. People use clothes to express and differentiate

themselves from others. Clothes have become a communication medium used to

convey who the person is. They are visual items representing a person’s identity

and personality-gender, age, race, occupation, social and financial status, fashion

tastes, color preferences, time orientation, liking, pride, attitudes, degree of

maturity, self- confidence, and self-esteem. There are other significant roles

played by clothing. Clothes have also shown themselves to be associated with

the identity of the country, religious beliefs, political events, and historical eras.

According to Gupta and Misra (2015), personal care products are

those products which are used by consumers for their personal purposes.

It includes different types of cosmetic and skin care products like talc, cold

cream, fairness cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, perfume, deodorant, hair

oil, shampoo, soap, and all types of baby care and beauty care products.

These are the core FMCG products. Any person needs these products

every day. Personal care products are part of the FMCG industry. In other

words, we can say that personal care products are the backbone of FMCG

industry. As time passes away, the demand for personal care products is

increasing day by day and the future of these products are also very bright

and profitable. There was a time when consumers did not spend too much

amount on personal care products. But in present days, they are not only

eager to spend more money on cosmetic products, but at the same time

they are looking for a good and prestigious brand for the product.

According to Cham, T.H., et al., (2015), buying clothes is both a lot of

fun and a necessity. After all, what we wear not only protects us from the

elements, but it’s also a way for us to express our personalities and make

a good impression on others. However, while fun, clothes shopping can all

too easily get out of hand. New clothes can be expensive, and it’s normal

to get a bit carried away and you can easily be tempted to spend more

than your budget. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have

great-looking clothes all the time. There are several things you can do that

will help you save money on clothing.

there is a significant correlation between financial management and

purchasing habits of the selected senior high school. This implies that the

higher the weekly allowance the greater their purchasing habits.

The results are parallel to the study of Azmi and Ramakrishnan

(2018), these findings suggest that both variables have a positive

relationship. The students’ financial management is significant towards the

purchasing habits. These result supports the findings of past study by (Taft

on individual’s ability that relate to finance in terms of increasing savings,

making purchasing decision correctly, having proper investing, asset

management, employing insurance, debt and credit management as well

as provide understanding of the real economic situation and his or her

financial position reasonably. This will lead an individual to overcome their

stress and worries successfully even if there are financial issues.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter discusses the summary of findings, conclusions, and

recommendations.

49
Correlational Study Between….

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

This study was concerned with determining the correlational study

between financial management and purchasing habits of the selected

senior high school students of Dr. Maria D. Pastrana National High School.

It examines the correlation of financial management and purchasing habits

in terms of food, clothes, and personal care products. There were 140

respondents of senior high school students conducted at Dr. Maria D.

Pastrana National High School, Mauban, Quezon.

Findings of the Study

The main objectives of the study are stated in Chapter 1, especially

in the statement of the problem part there are three major questions that

need to be answered to fulfill the requirements of the study. Through the

financial management and purchasing habits taken by the researchers to

answer these questions, these results were acquired:

1. In the demographic profile of the selected senior high school students in

terms of age, sex, grade level, and weekly allowance are the following

findings were derived:

In terms of age, out of our 140 respondents, 14.29% are 16-years old;

37.14% are 17-years old; 32.86% are 18-years old; 11.43% are 19-years

old; 2.86% are 20-years old; and 1.43% are the 21-years old.

In terms of sex, male was just 45% and females were 55%.

50
Correlational Study Between….

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

In terms of grade level, 46.42% are from grade 12 while 53.57% are from

grade 11.

In terms of weekly allowance, it clearly shows that those students who

has a weekly allowance of; ₱350, ₱750, and ₱1,200 were just 0.71%;

₱550, ₱600, and ₱800 were 1.43%; ₱700 were 2.14%; ₱1,500 were

2.86%; ₱400 were 4.29%; ₱250 and ₱300 were 8.57%; ₱1,000 were

12.86%; and ₱500 were 50%. It means that ₱500 is mostly the weekly

allowance of the selected respondents.

2. The purchasing habits of the respondents in terms of food has an

average weighted mean of 3.46 with the quantitative description of Agree,

while in clothes it has an average weighted mean of 3.42 with the
