ABSTRACT
It is known that plants respond to stimuli and music is considered one. Different genres of
music have been shown to influence plant growth differently. In this paper, the effects of two
different music genres on the growth of plant as observed by the researchers have been reported.
They will compare the effects of both genres, and then, they will determine which genre is better
for the development of the plant. A pilot study was conducted by the researchers to observe the
Radish plant’s response to Classical and Rock Music. It could be commented that the music
encouraged the growth of the plants and this is observable in terms of increased height, weight
and overall. Upon conducting the said experiment, the researchers found out that Classical music
boosts the heights of the plants greatly compared to rock music. Moreover, to make sure that
classical music really affects the growth of the plants, the researchers compared the plants
exposed to classical music to the plants that were not exposed to any form of music(control group)
and found out that there is a difference and the developments of the plants exposed to classical
music are greater compared to the plants that were not exposed to any form of music.

Keywords: Germination, Classical Music, Rock Music, Vibrations, Plants, Radish plant

INTRODUCTION

Music is a structure of artwork combining vocal or instrumental sounds which create a

composition. It is additionally a collection of a coordinated sound or sounds. Sound is described as

a type of mechanical disturbance to a state of equilibrium that generates through a medium

(R.Berg, 2020). Furthermore, there are two common types of waves, transverse and longitudinal,

which only differ in the way they are propagated. According to noisyplanet.nidcd.nih.gov (2019),

sound intensity(also known as sound pressure or power) is measured in units labelled as

decibels(dB). On the other hand, frequency of the sound refers to the number of wavelengths

passing per second and is measure in hertz or kilohertz (R. Berg, 2020).

Music can help people think better, evaluate matters more easily and work greater

effectively. There are various benefits in music, although some studies are needed to affirm the

advantages of music, various studies have proven that listening to music may have the following

beneficial and positive effects on well-being. It enhances mood, reduces stress, decreases anxiety,

improves fitness, improves memory, alleviates pain, offers comfort, and etc. In addition, making

music is the process of placing sounds and tones in an order, often combining them to create

unified composition, and also a track is made up of sounds, vibrations, and moments of silence,

and it does not always have to be nice or beautiful. It can be used to express a variety of

experiences, situations, and feelings (K. Cherry, 2019).

Furthermore, there are different genres of music, some of its type includes, classical and

rock music. Classical music was recognized in 1750-1820 era. It is played seriously and

expressively with the used of instruments. Classical music’s daily pleasure does not require the

listener to strain their brain with such fine differences, but to realize that classical music helps the
2

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

listener to relax their mind (Dr. J. Wildridge, 2019). On the other hand, rock was formed in America

in the later of the 1950s, a time in England and the United States in the 1960s where “rock and

roll” formed into different forms. The electric guitar drums sound will be the first thing that comes

“rock” is spoken, this sound is primarily related to this particular genre. Then the rock genre is

followed by the guitar, electric organs and other electrical instruments (Rock and Classica l Music,

2019).

Music has an intense impact on us, it has a clear influence for our mood and welfare, and

as years passed researchers have recorded the same effect of music on the plants as well. Plants

are defined as multicellular organisms that uses photosynthesis to produced their own food. There

are various species of plants over 300, 000, some of these includes grass, trees, and shrubs.

Plant’s role in the environment is crucial as they are one of main producers of oxygen in the world

and also play a vital role in the food chain as they are the main source of food of other animals

(biologydictionary.net, 2017). Each plant has specific seed-starting equirements, helping to start

small by growing only a few varieties (D. Grist, 2020).

There is a lot of information available about how to better care for plants, such as the

germination of seeds, and the importance of soil and water in plants. Many seeds germinate under

a wide range of conditions; time, temperature, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, light, coating, soil

conditions, and hormones. Others are quite specific to their demands. In most cases, the seed can

be identified if it is viable to germinate. Good seeds will sink to the bottom of the water container,

and any seeds that float may not be viable. (Mike McGroarty, 2015).
3

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Right after the seed germination,

for a healthy plant growth and development, vital nutrients such as water and air are given by the

soil. But each soil plot has its mixture of minerals, natural and non-natural matter, which primarily

determines the effective cultivation of crops, bush or sapling. Ideal soil can be grown on enclosed

plots such as plant beds or gardeners for specific crops. But the feature of the soil to be used for

greater land and lawns allows to be considered (Ruth Barton, 2013). Sandy soil is ideal for growing

root crops. It can provide the right nutrients and texture that vegetables would need. If it is

applied to sandy soil, fertilizer helps drainage (Barbara Fahs, 2017).

The type of water used in plants is one of the last things to keep in mind. However, it is

important to know what kind of water will use, as some are better than others, and some may

actually be harmful on plants. Tap or water sources is intended for individuals. For humans, though

not generally for plants, chemical and mineral additives such as fluorides, salts and chlorine are

advantageous, while many plants will thrive on just plain tap water. Let the water out for 24 hours

before use, which will kill off some of the harmful chemicals, to make tap water safer for the

plants. For watering plants, rain water is an excellent alternative. As well as individual garden and

potted plants. The Water Quality Association says, along with rain water, that purified water is best

for plants because it does not contain harmful minerals or chemicals. Often, deionized or reverse

osmosis waters do not contain toxic minerals or chemicals, they are often some of the most

valuable forms of plant water. Hardened water or mineral-rich water is also softened with sodium

carbonate. For plants, the excess sodium concentration in soft water is not healthy. The water will

potentially slow the growth of the plant. Generally speaking, the farmers or gardeners should not

be worried about what sort of water will use on their plants, it is important to be equally worried
4

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

about how they will water their plants.

Plants can never overwater, and in order for the roots not to rot out, plants should be in well-

draining soil. Furthermore, in general, between watering, plants should not be allowed to dry

completely. However, each plant is different, be aware about the irrigation, fertilization and light

needs of the particular plant (M. Lewis,2020).

Plants are also sensitive and many people has claimed that they feel like humans too.

Playing music for plants may seem odd, but evidence shows some genres of music is helping to

improve plant growth. Growth drivers on plants tends to raise caused by sound wave vibrations.

Additionally, vibrations do not only have an effect on development; nature may have given plants

the ability to “hear” so they can be alerted about predators. It is unclear what exactly causes the

effect music has on plants. It is thought that plants have “mechanoreceptors” which responds to

the pressure. Sound waves are composed of compressed-air molecules. Human have

mechanoreceptors that can detect and discern sound waves as each wave strikes the inner ear in

the form of pressure. If the plants have the same receptors, they can also response to changes in

soundwave, similar to those from music. (A. R. Chowdhury and A. Gupta, 2015).

According to, M. Dyer (2019), vibrations create movement in plant cells, which encourages

the plant to produce more nutrients, however, high-frequency and high-decibel sound kills the cells

(J. Jung, 2018). According to Plant Physiology Journal, 2018, the researchers, Bochu et al., in 1998

said, "High frequency and intensity of sound can cause cell damage, but at a proper frequency and

strength it can promote the growth of plant cells.", frequency is pitch while intensity is loudness,

therefore, the higher the pitch and loudness can cause cell damage. Plants tend to listen to each

other's vibrations, too. Plants close to other plants tend to grow faster and healthier than those
5

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

grown in solitary confinement. Research suggests that plants can "speak" to each other through

vibrations, and these communications let a plant know when growth is healthy. Other research

suggests that stimulus from sounds like music will turn on and off genes, suggesting that plants

will "listen" to their environment to know when to express those genes. If scientists are able to

gain a better understanding of this phenomenon, sounds such as music could likely be used to

promote growth (Meg Michelle, 2018).

According to Luther Burbank, an American botanist and horticulturist, 2019, He studied

about how vegetation react when they are eliminated from their natural habitats and he talks to his

plants. Based on his horticultural experiments, he attributed approximately 20 sensory perceptions

to plants. His research were inspired by using the works of Charles Darwin's The Variation of

Animals and Plants underneath Domestication, that is published in 1868. The first experiment of

tune on plants was carried out via Dr. T. C Singh in 1962. Dr. T.C Singh located out that plants

have sensory perceptions and they react through sound waves and vibrations when the flora are

uncovered to track that comes from recorders. Dr. T.C Singh repeated his test however only with

the exception of ragas performed on flute, violin, veena and harmonium. Luckily, the flora did no

longer flip him down. Plants replied with bounty growth. After clearing through these profitable

experiments, Dr. T.C Singh testified that even the classical tune will propel plant growth (S.

Panchadhyayi, 2015).

The goal of the researchers in this study is to determine the effects of different music

genres on plant development. They will compare the effects of both genres, and then, they will

determine which genre is better for the development of the plant. The result will contribute to
6

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

garden ownder, plant owners, and even farmer in raising and taking care of their plants. This study

will also contribute to future researchers to be their reference if their study is related to this topic.

Research Objective

To determine how two different genres will affect the growth of plants.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the effectiveness of two genres of music; the classical music and

rock music on the growth of plants and how it affects the development of the plant. This study

determined which type of music genres, really affects the plant growth and if ever there are any

effects on a plant’s number of leaves, and weight of the plant. This study helped us determine

which genre of music is effective in boosting the growth and development of the plant.

Furthermore, the researcher used a control group to determine if music has an effect to plant

growth.

Hypothesis

Null hypothesis (Ho)

 There is no significant difference between the means of the 3 groups(Classical, Rock, and

Control).

 Ho : f < Fcrit value

 Ho : μ1= μ2= μ3
7

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Alternative hypothesis (Ha)

 There is a significant difference between the means of the 3 groups(Classical, Rock, and

Control).

 Ha : f > Fcrit

 H a : μ 1 ≠ μ2 ≠ μ3

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of music on plant growth. It will

provide another option of plant growth booster. This study will promote Classical Music as an

alternative option for the growth of the plants other than chemicals.

As for the Farmers, this study will give them another way of effective farming with the use of

music which will help the growth of their crops.

As for Garden Owners, study will give another effective way for the growth of the plants on

their garden than using other chemicals that might pose harm to their health.

As for Plant Seller, this study will give another effective way of promoting the growth of

the plants which is through classical music.

As for Plant Collector, this study will provide another option for the promotion of plant

growth.
8

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

As for Agricultural

Students, this study will provide knowledge regarding to the use of Classical music as an

alternative for the promotion of plant growth to the agriculture students.

As for the Department of Agriculture(DOA), this study will provide DOA an alternative

variable(Classical Music) that promotes the growth of the plants that is safe to both human and

environment.

As for the Future Researchers, this study will show the findings that can be used as a

reference for those who would choose to conduct a research about the effectiveness of music to

the plant’s growth.

Those who will benefit from this study are the farmers, garden owners, and future

researchers in understanding the effectiveness of music to the plant growth.

POSITIVE EFFECT NEGATIVE EFFECT

The figure above illustrates the connection of the study’s main variables. It can be seen

classical music and rock music are both place above the plant growth, which the arrow indicates

that there is a relationship and/or connection on the variables. Classical music greatly emphasized

homophonic melodies, meaning that there was a single melody that all the instruments played. It is

light, almost airy (F. Lonescu, 2019). While rock music was formed in America in the later of the

1950s, a time in England and the United States in the 1960s where “rock and roll” formed into

different forms. The electric guitar drums sound will be the first thing that comes “rock” is spoken,

this sound is primarily related to this particular genre. Then the rock genre is followed by the

guitar, electric organs and other electrical instruments (Rock and Classical Music, 2019). According
10

to, M. Dyer (2019), vibrations create

movement in plant cells, which encourages the plant to produce more

nutrients. Plants are sensitive and many people has claimed that they feel like humans too. Playing

music for plants may seem odd, but evidence shows some genres of music is helping to improve

plant growth. Growth drivers on plants tends to raise caused by sound wave vibrations (A. R.

Chowdhury and A. Gupta, 2015). The growth of the plant has a connection with classical music

and rock music, where these two different music genres shows to be the reason of the cause to a

positive and negative effects of the plant growth.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

A quantitative design was utilized in this study since it specifically focused on gathering

numerical data. According to O. Apuke (2017), a quantitative research design come to terms with

the analyzation of the variables as well as quantifying it so that the researchers will get results. In

addition, it uses a specific statistical treatment for the utilization and understanding of numerical

data. The researcher used experimental method in this study, particularly, a True Experimental

method. The essence of this method is, it involves manipulating a variable to determine if changes

in one variable cause changes in another variable (E. Babbie, 2010). In true experiments, the

researchers adjusted or manipulate the variable that is expected to influence the dependent

variable that is being examined. The independent variable is considered the variable that the

researcher has power over. The outcome or effect of the study is referred to as the dependent

variable. The dependent variable is often referred to as the outcome variable because it is the

outcome of the study. The researcher cannot control the dependent variable (O. Mitchelle, 2015).

Respondents

The researchers only tested the effects of different genres of music on plant growth, Thus,

the researcher used Radish plant as their subject for their experiment.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCESS

In comparing the effects of the different music genres on plant growth the materials and

instruments used are: Pots, Organic Soil, Tap Water, Radish Seeds, Speaker, Flash drive, Ruler,

Weighing Scale.

1.) Germination

1.1 The researchers germinated the radish seeds on tissue paper.

1.2 They monitored the progress of the seeds in 4-6 days.

1.3 After the germination, the seedlings were transferred in a different small cups with same

amount of organic soil.

2.) Seedlings tranferring in small cups

2.1 The researchers monitored the height of the seedlings in small cups.

2.2 They monitored the plants until their heights are 1-2 inches.

3.) Seedlings transferring in pots

3.1 The researchers transferred the seedlings in different big pots with same amount of organic soil

3.2 The researchers divided the seedlings in three groups, the classical, rock and control groups.

3.3 The three groups has five seedlings each.

4.) Music exposure on plants

13

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

4.1 The five seedlings were exposed to classical music, while the other five seedlings were exposed

to rock music. Both groups were exposed to music for 2 hours, thrice a week for 4 weeks.

4.2 The researcher also monitored five seedlings that were not exposed to any form of music, or

known as control group.

5.) Note-taking

5.1 The researchers monitored the height of each plants in three groups.

5.2 They recorded the progress of each plants on a paper once a week.

6.) Final measurements (weight and height)

6.1 After a month, the researcher weighs each of plants in three groups.

6.2 They also measured the final height of each plants.

6.3 After the researcher gathered the data, they compared the plants on each groups using their

statistical tools.

6.4 Lastly, after the analysis, they determined if there is a difference of the growth of the plants.
14

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Research Instruments

The researchers used a Speaker and a Flash drive to expose the plants to music with a

specific genre. Furthermore, the researchers used five radish plants each that will be exposed to

each genre (classical and rock music), and five radish plants as a control group. The researchers

also used a ruler to measure the height of each plants once a week. They also used weighing scale

to measure the weight of the plants at the last day of observation.

Data Collection

The data was gathered with the use of observation and note-taking methods. The researchers

used the instruments to the subjects to measure the growth of each plants. After the experiment,

the researchers gathered the acquired data and correlate them. This represented the effects of

different music genres of the plant growth.

Ethical Considerations

The researchers only observed the effectiveness of two music genres in the plant growth,

no person or no animals was harmed or tested by the researcher in this study.

15

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Data Analysis

To determine the correlation between music genres and plants growth, the researchers

used three Statistical techniques: (1) Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), specifically, One- way ANOVA,

to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between the means of three

or more independent (unrelated) groups (W. Kelton, 2019). (2) Dunnett’s Test (also called

Dunnett’s Method or Dunnett’s Multiple Comparison), to compare means from several experimental

groups against a control group mean to see is there is a difference (S. Glen, 2017). (3) Line Graph

to show data that continuously change over time (C. Halton, 2019). The researchers input the

gathered data from the experiment to Microsoft Excel to get the results. Finally, they confirmed

the hypothesis and showed the results in specific table.

DISCUSSION

In this part, the results of the study are presented and discussed with reference to the aim of

the study which was to determine how two different genres will affect the growth of plants. This

section relays the conclusions and recommendations of the researchers based on the gathered

data.

Conclusions

The use of different chemicals has been used almost everywhere to boost plant development.

These chemicals can sometimes be harmful to humans and also for the environment. This study

aims to show that music can be a substitute or replacement for the chemicals. This study describes

the good and bad effects of music on plant development.

The use of chemicals that are being used for plant development boosters can be expensive

and may kill or damage the plant. While the use of music as a booster can be quite expensive also

but it doesn't cause damage to the plant. The use of chemicals requires a lot of work. The use of

music promotes lesser work because all they need to do is to set it up.

The researchers aim to promote classical music that can also be used for boosting plant

development. Not only for the plants and plant owners but also for aspiring musical artists would

benefit.
31

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Recommendations

In light with the over-all findings of the study, it is recommended that:

 Plant owner who uses chemicals to boost their plant's growth must be aware for the

possible harm it may cause to them and the environment. The researchers are

suggesting that classical music can replaced harmful chemicals and also acts as a

variable for plant development. The use of classical music can make them and the

environment safe. The classical music will not only the plants would benefit but also

the plant owners. It can help them be relaxed because of the sounds that the music

produces.

 When the plant owners experience death of plants caused by the chemicals they use,

the researchers suggest the use of music. Not only less chance of damage to plants

but also requires less work. Plant owners wouldn't need to travel to buy the products

and manually give them to the plants. Using music will only need them to prepare it

properly so that it can last for a long time.

 The researchers would recommend inventors to create a devices/sound

sytems/speaker that can be used for boosting plant development. By this, plant

owners will be able to use music effectively for plant development and also for them

to enjoy it. The researchers also encourage aspiring musical artists to create more
32

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

classical music. By this,

there will be more selections for plant owners and preserving it as well.
