THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHORISTERS

1. Every single member of the choir has the responsibility to know their part, to attend rehearsal
regularly, Choristers should arrive early to properly warm up their voice importantly before
rehearsal.

2. Good Behaviour: Choristers should conduct themselves in an orderly manner both at rehearsal
and at functions, Reading Musical Notation: With the assistance of the choir master choristers
should strive to learn how to read music and make available for sight reading before full
rehearsal starts.

3. Punctuality: Choristers must be punctual in attending rehearsal and shall be in the church at
least 25 minutes before the schedule time for masses. Thirty minutes after commencement of
rehearsal without an excuse attracts 50 naira fine.

4. Participation/Commitment: A chorister should commit to rehearsal at all times. It is the


responsibility of the choristers to inform the choir master if you need to be absent from a
rehearsal. Never leave the choir master questioning your level of commitment. Chorister should
practice beyond rehearsal at home going over the music. Choristers require participating during
mass as well as special services like Wedding, Birthday, and Burials. Every choristers is
expected to pay 100 naira monthly due.

Note: Only financial members are entitle to welfare package , that is gift at their wedding,
naming ceremony and burials.

5. Discipline: If you are not disciplined you have no business in the choir. No choir can make
any progress if members are lacking discipline. Every chorister should have fear of God and be
humble. The motto of every choir member-should be sing praises unto the lord . A Chorister who
is absent from choir for a period of one (1) month without official excuse , will write a letter of
commitment before returning to the choir.

Education and Experience: A chorister should be able to read and write

DUTIES OF OFFICERS / DURATION

An elected officers will serve a term of 2 years and can be reelected into that post for another 2
years, making a total of 4 years.

MUSIC DIRECTOR (BY APPOINTMENT)

The music director runs musical aspects of choir

Direct and lead choir members and musical instrumentalists.

Arrange auditions and select members for choir.


Plan, coordinate and direct musical rehearsals and performances.

Use music experience and conducting skills to lead the choir and instrumentalists to achieve
optimum effect on music performance.

Study voice, rhythm, tone and tempo of every individual and coach them individually to improve
their musical skills.

Perform solo to direct and guide the vocal ensemble members.

Schedule regular maintenance of musical instruments.

Develop positive working relationships with other musicians.

Stay updated on latest developments in music industry.

Attend meetings and committee meetings as needed within and outside the parish.

Join as a representative of the choir at deneary, archdiocese, national and international meetings

CHOIRMASTERS/CHOIRMISTRESSES

Manage various aspects of the vocal, and sometimes instrumentalist,

Teach songs

Conduct the choir at rehearsals , masses and performances

Conduct performances of musical groups, such as choirs,

oversees choir script, hymn books and musical notes

Attend meetings and committee meetings as needed within and outside the parish.

Join as a representative of the choir at deneary, archdiocese, national and international meetings

PRESIDENT

The administrative head of the choir

conducts choir meetings,

makes sure the choir directory is updated,

serves as the choir’s spokesperson to the rest of the church,

and supervises all committees and other leadership roles within the choir.

The choir president runs the non-musical aspects of choir.


Choir presidents often also oversee everything in the choir including election of new officers for
the choir.

Attend meetings and committee meetings as needed within and outside the parish.

Head of representatives of the choir at deneary, archdiocese, national and international meetings

VICE-PRESIDENT

In the absence of the president act in the capacity of the president and any other duty assigned by
the president

SECRETARY

Keeps track of membership lists, alumni and announcement lists.

Takes notes at meetings, and prepares agendas and minutes for said meetings.

Processes such data as is needed by the President, other officers, the choiresters or the church.

ASSITANT SECRETARY

In the absence of the sectary act in the capacity of the sectary and any other duty assigned by the
president

FINANCIAL SECRETARY

Receive and record all funds transactions in the financial book and forward same to treasurer

Handle disbursements and refunds note.

Reconcile and provide monthly and annual financial reports.

Prepare and issue payment authorizations as approved by the treasurer and president

TREASURER

To monitor the financial health of the choir throughout the year.

To maintain a true record of income and expenditure.

To collect dues from members at monthly meetings

Accepts donations and levies on behalf of the choir before any hired event such as marriage,
birthday, funeral and any functions the choir is invited to function and records the amount with
name , date and purposes.
Deposit funds in the choir's bank accounts.

Keeps detailed records of all financial transactions.

Maintains records of spending habits, and more.

Presents a quarterly statement on the choir’s finances in line with financial reports

LIBRARIAN

Assist in music collating and preparation for distribution as necessary;

Oversee music distribution at rehearsals;

Oversee process of music returns and accounting for each member's music;

Communicate with executives as to outstanding music owed by members;

Expected to prepare and put away equipment and materials for all after rehearsals, activities,

and concerts

WELFARE OFFICER

To oversee the hospitality and welfare of the choiresters during practice and mass.

To plan and organize get together in conjunction with the executives.

In charge of all choirs properties, cleaning and arrangement of choir room

To oversee the refreshment and feeding of the choiresters during and after all functions.

To organize and arrange in agreement with executive to visit any member who is sick,
depressed, discouraged or bereaved.

To liaise with other executive for welfare package during functions of a financially committed
members.

To mobilize supports from the choiresters to minister at a committed members function.

PROVOST

The Provost of the choir is the only member allowed to stand or stroll within the rehearsal room
during rehearsals; this allows her/him to spot inappropriate behaviours.

Delivers punishment in accordance with the exco to the offender .

Failure to obey the provost may lead to a suspension.


Helps in maintaining order

In charged with the safekeeping of choiresters at all times.

RULES AND CONDUCT DURING REHEARSALS

A vast amount of repertoire must be learned each season in a short period of rehearsal time.
Therefore it is essential that every minute of the rehearsal be used wisely.

Choristers are encouraged to come with their scripts and note for every rehearsal.

Modest dressing is mandatory while coming for rehearsals. Head tie for girls is also mandatory.

Gum, candy, food and drink, other than water, are not allowed during rehearsals. Any snacks
must be consumed after rehearsal.

During Rehearsals, choristers must handle choir copies and hymn books with care to avoid tear,

Leaving rehearsal hall or room during rehearsals and meetings is not permitted.

Noise making is not tolerated during rehearsals

Ten minutes break will be permitted in- between rehearsals to allow use of rest rooms, small
stretching, discussions and drinking of water only.

Psalmist for the following Sunday is expected to have the melody for his/her psalm ready.
Failure to do so will result to stripping him/her of the psalm and suspending him/her from sitting
in the Choir stand for that Sunday.

During rehearsals, parents are welcome to wait in the open areas around the hall. Parents are
welcome to quietly observe rehearsals.

After rehearsal closing prayers, choristers are expected to return their seats properly before
leaving.
