CHAPTER 3 MOMENTUM &IMPULSE 2021/2022

1. A 0.144 kg baseball is moving toward home plate with speed of 43 ms-1 when it is bunted (hit softly). The bat
exerts an average force of 6.5 x 103 N on the ball for 1.30 ms. The average force is directed toward the pitcher.
What is the final speed of the ball? ( -15.68 ms-1)

2. A volleyball player changes the velocity of the ball from 5 ms-1 to 30 ms-1 along a certain direction. If the
impulse delivered to the ball by the player is -15 kg ms-1, calculate the mass of the volleyball. (0.43 kg)

3. Two group of canoeists meet in the middle of the lake. After a brief visit, a person in canoe 1 pushes on canoe
2 with a force of 46 N to separate the canoes. If the mass of canoe 1 and its occupants 130 kg and the mass
canoe 2 and its occupants is 250 kg, find the momentum of each canoe after 1.20 s of pushing.
(-55.2 Ns, 55.2 Ns)

4. A honeybee lands on one end of a floating 4.75 g popsicle stick. After sitting at rest for a moment, it runs
toward the other end with a speed of 3.8 cms-1 relative to the still water. The stick moves in the opposite
direction at 0.120 cms-1. What is the mass of the bee? (1.5 x 10-4 kg)

5. After winning a prize on a game show, a 72 kg contestant jumps for joy.

a) If the results in an upward speed of 2.1 ms-1, what is the impulse experienced by the contestant?
(151.2 Ns)
b) Before jump, the floor exerts an upward force of mg on contestant. What additional average upward
force does the floor exert if the contestant pushes down on it for 0.36 s during jump? (286.32 N)

6. The diagram shows two ‘vehicles’ on an air track approaching each other. After impact they stick together.
a) Calculate velocity of the vehicle after collision. State the direction of motion. (0.14 ms-1)
b) By performing appropriate calculations, explain whether the collision is elastic or in elastic

0.5 ms-1 0.4 ms-1

0.6 kg 0.4 kg

7. Figure below shows two objects with equal mass, A and B before and after they collide. After collision, they
move together
a) Find the velocity of the objects after collision (11.18 ms-1)
b) Show that the collision is in elastic

8. An apple of mass 220g is on top of a table of height 150 cm. an arrow of mass 100g travelling horizontally
with a velocity u hit the apple. The apple and arrow then fall together towards the ground 2m away. Find u of
arrow. (11.64 ms-1)

9. Flour at mass rate 0.06 kgs-1 and velocity 15 ms-1 is poured vertically into a bowl. If the flour comes to a rest
upon hitting the bowl, calculate the average force exerted by the flour on the bowl.

10. Two objects, A and B move towards each other along a smooth horizontal surface with a velocity of 20 ms-1
and 14 ms-1 respectively. The two objects then collide and object B stops after the collision. Is the collision
elastic? Prove your answer with calculation.
