Case Study I: SharedSpace is a sharing-economy based co-working space platform that space owners
can share their physical places (such as an office space or a meeting room) for a short-term rent, while
customers can search and rent a space for their own purposes.

Space owners can register their shared spaces into the platform for rent with different rental rates:
hourly rate, half-day rate, and full-day rate. A space maybe equipped with facilities such as printers,
wifi Internet, computers, LCD TVs, audio systems, teleconferencing systems, etc.). Different spaces
may have different sizes and seating capacities.

Customers can rent a space for various possible purposes such as meeting, presentation, training,
discussion, tutorial, party, etc. Customers can search for available spaces for rent based on the
location, the room size, capacity, provided facilities, rental rates, rating, etc. A booking can be made
online by any customers. For any rent, customers can give rating/feedback of each rent.

SharedSpace Platform staff can also use the system to add new promotions as well as view important
reports. In the first version, this platform is available for sharing/renting spaces within Thailand only.
However, users can be Thai or expats. Since the business model of SharedSpace relies on the
developed digital system, its user-friendliness, performance, speed and availability should be ones of
the most important concerns. Users should be able to use the platform through any devices.

Part I: Consider the given case study. Answer the following questions.

1. [20%] Assume the following estimation for the system development and implementation for
SharedSpace:
• Hiring a new project manager with the salary 40,000 THB per month. The project manager will not
be hired after the first year of project development/implementation.
• Hiring 3 new software developers (temporary), each having 20,000 THB salary per month. After
the development period, one developer will be hired as the software maintenance team.
• During the development and testing period, a cloud platform will be rented with the cost of 20,000
THB per month.
• Computing and data center facilities of the production system will be on Amazon cloud with the
service fee of 30,000 THB per month. Other operational expenses will be around 20,000 THB per
month.
• All costs are subject to 10% increasing every year.
• Each year a promotional event of the platform will be organized with the budget of 30,000 THB.
• The SharedSpace platform expects to generate the total rental revenue on the platform for
1,000,000 THB per month in the first year with 20% growth each year.
• The platform will charge 10% platform fee from the space owner for all revenue generated.
Note:
• A discount rate is 3%.
• The company plans to spend the first year for development, implementation and training.

a. [10%] Identify and classify the cost/benefits into fixed costs, variable costs, one-time costs,
recurring costs as well as revenue/benefits of each year. Compute the cost/benefit item of
each year.
b. [10%] Assess the economic feasibility of this option for the minimum 3 years of operation with
appropriate interpretation and recommendations. Perform break-even and ROI analysis.

2. [50%] Perform the requirement determination and modeling for SharedSpace System development as
specified below. You may make necessary / appropriate assumptions.

a. [10%] Identify all stakeholders of the SharedSpace system. Select appropriate requirements
elicitation methods to further gather the requirements of the system from each groups of
stakeholders. Explain.
b. [10%] Identify important functional and non-functional requirements of the system. You can
make appropriate assumptions.
c. [15%] Draw a use case diagram for the SharedSpace system. State clearly the assumptions
you make (if any). Try to use extend and include when appropriate.
d. [15%] Choose one use case with certain complexity, where you can elaborate the steps as well
as possible extensions/exceptions clearly. Write a use case document in kite level for the
selected use case.

Part II: Project Management

3. [30%] Answer the following questions based on the findings from the related papers presented and
discussed in the class as well as the interview with project managers.

a. Discuss the critical skills for project managers and why they are important.
b. When a project runs into a problem which could compromise the project time, cost or scope,
discuss possible actions that a project manager should do.
c. Discuss the most important factors/challenges of a project which could make a project fail or
