RATIONAL FUNCTIONS
(Real-life representations, rational equations and inequalities)

I. Learning Competencies
1. Represents real-life situations using rational functions.
2. Distinguishes rational function, rational equation, and rational inequality.
II. Objectives
The learners are expected to:
a. represents real-life situations using rational functions;
b. distinguish rational function, rational equation, and rational inequality.
III. Key Concept
Rational functions are expressed as the ratio of two polynomial functions 𝑃
𝑃(𝑥)
and 𝑄. In symbols, 𝑓(𝑥) = . The value of the rational functions is defined for all real
𝑄(𝑥)
number 𝑥, except for the value of 𝑥 that make the denominator zero.
In real-life, two things can be seen equal and unequal. Sometimes one is greater
or lesser than the other. Mathematically speaking, two ratios are equal for specific
value and unequal for possible values.

Rational expression, rational equation, rational inequality and rational function

follow the same definition which contain ratio of two polynomials.

IV. Activities
ACTIVITY 1
Rational Functions in Real-life

Directions: Identify whether the following real-life situations represents rational

functions or not. Write your answer on the provided textbox.

1. The local barangay received a budget of Php 200,000 to provide financial assistance
due to COVID-19 pandemic. The amount is to be allotted equally among all the family
households in the barangay.

2. A rental company charges a flat fee of Php 3,500 and an additional Php 20 per
kilometer to rent a moving van.

3. To pay for the resort, the swimming class of Mr. Galang must pay Php 1,000 a day.
This rental fee must be divided among all students who attend the swimming class.
ACTIVITY 2
Rational Function or Not
Direction: Identify whether the following functions as Rational Function or Not. If not,
state the reason.

ACTIVITY 3
Rational Equations and Rational Inequalities
Direction: Determine whether the given is a rational function, a rational equation, a
rational inequality, or none of these. Write your RF if rational function, RE if rational
equation and RI if rational Inequalities.
