Resume Writing
Do’s
• Use serif font face for heading - Times New Roman, Georgia, Baskerville, Garamond, Cambria, etc.
• Use sans serif font face for body – Lato, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Segoe UI, etc.
• Keep body font size between 10 and 12.
• Keep same fonts and font sizes for all headings and same fonts and font sizes for all body text.
• Check indentation of all the headings and body text.
• Use maximum 2 colours in your resume (lighter shades of blue or grey).
• Use reverse chronological order for professional experience and academic achievement (ie latest first).
• Try to quantify your achievements.
• Restrict your personal information to your email id and contact number (Details of parents, marital status not
required).
• Add your LinkedIn URL (but don’t make it as live link, some applicant tracking system (ATS) detects it as virus).
• Proof read your resumes so that there are no typing and grammatical errors.
• Highlight your tech skills – softwares and technologies you are familiar with.
• Mention about your certificates, achievements and rewards.
Don’ts
• Copy career objectives, hobbies, extracurricular activities of others.
• Put photo unless specifically asked.
• Use Cosmic Sans font face.
• Share the word file of resume, always share in PDF format.
• Write “Resume” or “Curriculum Vitae” in the heading.
• Put important details in header and footer (not read by ATS).
• Use unprofessional email id to send your resume for eg coolamit@gmail.com.
• Include references unless specifically asked for.
• Use paragraphs, instead write in bullet points.
• Use acronym or technical jargon which makes it difficult for people from different background to understand.
• Mention your past and expected salary.
Vocabulary
• Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Document with extensive information about academic background, degrees, awards,
publications and professional experience. It is to be used by people having extensive experience.
• Peruse – Read something carefully or in detail
• Synergy – the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances or other agents to produce
a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects
• Bottom line – Profits of the company
• Pioneer – develop or be the first to use or apply a new method, or area of knowledge of activity.
• Proficient – competent or skilled in doing or using something
