Assignment 4

Discharge measurement devices

Q1. Water flows over 1m wide trapezoidal weir at a depth of 0.2m. The width at the water
surface is 1.5m. Afterwards water passes through a triangular right-angled weir. Find the depth
of water over the triangular weir. Take C d for trapezoidal and triangular weir as 0.62 and 0.60
respectively.

Q2. A rectangular notch of 0.80m width has discharge of 150 litre/second. While measuring the
head over notch, an error of 5 mm is made. Calculate the percentage error in the discharge. Take
Cd=0.63.

Q3. A rectangular notch has a width of 8m. The head of water over the notch is 1.725m. Find its
discharge. Given Va= 0.06 m/s and Cd=0.63.

Q4. A suppressed rectangular weir is to be constructed in a channel with a maximum depth of

water on the upstream side 3m and discharge 3m 3/s. If the length of the crest is 5m, find the
height of weir to be constructed. What will be the height required if instead of suppressed weir, a
weir with an end contraction is used? What will be the height required, if the stream is divided
into 3 bays of 3 m length each using two vertical post? Take Cd=0.68 for suppressed weir.

Q5. A rectangular weir channel has a width of 1.5 m. It is sealed at the end by a rectangular weir.
If the length of the weir is 1.180 m and its sill is 0.75 m from the bottom, what will be its
discharge when the measured head over the crest is 0.475 m? Cd= 0.61 and α=1.255.

Q6. The length and width of the weir is 50m and the head of water above the crest is 0.5 m. The
depth of water on the upstream side of weir is 2m. Take Cd=0.65. Find the discharge over the
crest. Consider velocity of approach.

Q7. A sharp crested Cipoletti weir of crest length 0.5 m is constructed in a rectangular channel of
0.9 m width and 0.5 m depth. The water level in the channel is 0.2 m above the weir crest. Take
Cd=0.6, calculate the discharge over the weir?
Q8. A rectangular weir of 0.5 m width empties a reservoir of surface area 450 m 2. Calculate the
time required to empty the reservoir from a height of 5m to 2m above the sill? Take Cd=0.63.

Q9. A reservoir which is 90 m long and 70 m wide is provided with a 2 m long rectangular
notch. Find the time required to lower the water level in the reservoir from 2m to 1m. take
Cd=0.61.
