MOMENTUM TRANSFER--UNIT-3

Venturi meter

1) Venturi meter is installed in a pipe line for the measurement of flow rates of water. The
pressure drop across the throat and the upstream of meter is 10cm of mercury. Calculate the
volumetric flow rate of water in m3/s.Diameter of throat is 15mm, diameter of pipe is
25mm.Discharge co-efficient is 0.98.
2) A 30cmx15cm venturi meter is inserted in vertical pipe carrying water flowing in upward
direction. A differential mercury manometer is connected to the inlet and throat giving a
reading of 20cm.Calculate the discharge if the co-efficient for venturi meter is 0.98.Derive the
expression foe volumetric flow rate through the venturimeter placed vertically.
3) A 20cm x 10cm venture meter is inserted in a vertical pipe carrying oil of specific gravity of
0.8.The flow of oil is in the upward direction. The difference of level between the throat and
inlet is 50cm.The oil-mercury differential manometer has a reading of 30cm.Calculate the
discharge of oil neglecting all losses.
4) Calculate the discharge of water flowing through a pipe 30cm diameter placed in an inclined
position were a venture meter is inserted having a throat diameter 15cm.The difference of
pressure as measured by an inverted u-tube manometer is 30cm.The manometer fluid has a
density of 0.6. The loss of head between pipe and throat is 0.2 times the kinetic head in the
pipe.
Orifice meter
5) Water is flowing at a rate of 500cm3/s through an orifice of 25mm diameter placed in a 75mm
diameter pipe. Calculate the difference in level in mercury manometer connected across the
meter. The co-efficient across the meter is given as 0.65.
6) Orifice meter is installed in a pipeline for measuring flow rate of water. The pressure drop
across the orifice is 10cm of mercury. Calculate the volumetric flow rate if the diameter of the
orifice is 25mm and diameter of pipe is 50mm.Coefficent of discharge is 0.62.
7) An orifice meter is used to measured .The flow rate of water flowing in a pipe having internal
diameter 78mm and orifice has a diameter of 15mm. The mercury manometer reads 18cm.The
volumetric flow rate is 791cm3/s.Calculate a) discharge co-efficient b) if the pressure drop is
decreased to 9cm of mercury, what will be the flow rate?
8) Water is flowing at 1.5lt/s in a 50mm diameter pipe. It is metered using an orifice having
diameter 25mm. If the co-efficient of discharge for the orifice is 0.62, what will be the reading
in the manometer connected to the meter? The manometer fluid is mercury having density
13600kg/m3.Also calculate the Reynolds number for the flow in the pipe.
9) Water flows through an orifice of diameter 25mm situated in a 75mm pipe at a rate of 0.3
lt/s.Calculate the difference in level in the manometer in terms of flowing fluid, if the discharge
co-efficient is 0.61.
10)Sulphuric acid is flowing through a pipe of 15mm internal diameter. An orifice of 10mm
diameter is fitted in the pipe. The differential pressure shown by a mercury manometer is
10cm.Assuming that the manometer is well connected to the pipe. Calculate a) The mass flow
rate of acid b) Pressure loss caused by the orifice in KN/m2.
Rota meter
11)A Rota meter tube is 0.3m long with an internal diameter of 25mm at the top and 20mm at the
bottom. The diameter of float is 20mm.Calculate the flow rate of water when the float is half
way up the tube. Specific gravity of float is 4.8.Volume of float is 6cm3 and discharge coefficient
is 0.7.
Notches & Weirs
12)Calculate the discharge of water flowing over a rectangular notch of 2m length, when a
constant head over the notch is 300mm.The discharge co-efficient is 0.6.
13)Determine the height of a rectangular weir of length 6m built across the rectangular channel.
The maximum depth of water on the upstream side of weir is 1.8m and flow rate is 2000 lt/s,
co-efficient of discharge is 0.6.
14)The head of water over rectangular notch is 90cm.The discharge is 300lt/s. Calculate the length
of the notch. Its co-efficient of discharge is 0.62.
15)Calculate the discharge through a triangular notch having an angle 60◦, when the head over the
notch is 0.3m and the discharge co-efficient is 0.6.
16)Water flows over a rectangular weir 1m wide at a depth of 15cm.Later it passes through a
triangular right angled weir. Calculate the depth over the triangular weir if the co-efficient of
discharge for the rectangular and triangular weir are 0.62 and 0.59 respectively.
17)Calculate the discharge through trapezoidal notch which is 1m wide at the top and 0.4m at the
bottom. Depth of water is 20cm.The head of notch is 30cm.Cd1=0.62 and Cd2=0.6.
18)Calculate the discharge through a rectangular orifice 2m wide, 1.5m deep fitted to a water tank.
Water level in tank is 3m above the top edge of the orifice. Co-efficient of discharge is 0.62.
Emptying of tanks
19)The head of water over an orifice of diameter 4cm is 10m.Calculate the actual discharge and
actual velocity of jet at vena contracta. The co-efficient of discharge is 0.6 and co-efficient of
velocity (Cv) = 0.98.
20)A jet of water is coming out from a sharp edged vertical orifice under a constant head of 10cm
at a certain point. The horizontal and vertical co-ordinates measured from vena contracta are
20cm and 10.5cm.Calculate co-efficient of velocity and co-efficient of contraction. If co-efficient
of discharge is 0.6.
21)A hemispherical tank of diameter 4m contains water to a height of 2m.The tank is provided with
an orifice having diameter 0.5m,calculate the time taken by water a) to fall from 2m to 1m of
height b) for completely emptying of tank. Co-efficient of discharge is 0.6
22)A circular tank of diameter 1.25m contains water up to a height of 0.5m.An orifice of 50mm
diameter is provided at the bottom of the tank, if co-efficient of discharge is 0.62. Calculate the
height of water above the orifice after 1.5min. Take length of tank = 1m.
23)A circular tank of diameter 1.25m contains water up to a height of 5m.An orifice of 50m
diameter is provided at the bottom of the tank, if co-efficient of discharge is 0.62. Calculate the
height of water above the orifice after 1.5min.
