Critical Information Systems Paper 1

Kudler Fine Foods is an upcoming grocery chain in San Diego. The Kudler Fine Foods

was established in 1998 and currently has three locations. That specializes in domestic and

imported foods and currently has five departments of food services. The Kudler Fine Foods

currently has a finance and accounting system, sales and marketing system, human resources

system, operations system, and an information technology system. In all of the systems there is a

repeated lack of security and loss prevention.

The lack of security and loss prevention in the systems of the Kudler Fine Foods becomes

a major information system critical. Due to the lack of security and loss prevention a high

amount of risk are formed. The implementation of security and loss prevention will provide the

company with the ability to ensure high profit revenues and productivity. It would be beneficial

to the Kudler Fine Foods to implement a loss prevention policy due to the fact the company

ensures a fresh product to the customers. The policy of loss prevention will ensure that the less

amount of product possible will be lost due to expired or poor quality food. Loss Prevention will

provide the Kudler Fine Foods with a precaution and awareness of the products and assets of the

company.

The Kudler Fine Foods can take a number of methods of loss prevention and unitize the

methods to ensure protection in a financial view. On December 31, 2003, the Kudler Fine Foods

had a total of 429 thousand dollars in merchandise inventory. A loss prevention method that

could become beneficial is the first in first out method. This allows the product that was stocked

first to be bought first. The first in first out method will prevent high amounts of waste due to

poor quality or expired food.

The policy of security for the Kudler Fine Foods only truly exists in the finance and

accounting system. There are neither formal company security policies nor are there any written

policies regarding the security of the finance and accounting systems or any other system for that

matter. The Kudler Fine Foods would highly benefit from the use of security in all of the system

because without security the systems are vulnerable to a number of attacks.

Security in the systems of the Kudler Fine Foods will ensure that the company’s assets,

merchandise, and private documentation are protected. The Kudler Fine Foods currently has no

true form of security. The policy states that the following:

Security:

•The power problems plaguing California had a definite financial impact thus all stores

and company headquarters have installed auxiliary generators enabling the finance and

accounting systems to be supported 7 times 24.

•There are no written policies relative to security of the finance & accounting systems.

•The REMS has imbedded security features…passwords, dollar limits, limited access

features…however, there are no formal company policies or audits regarding same.

•Disbursements (checks or cash) over $1,000 must be approved by either the CFO or

President. Over $5,000 by both the CFO and President. (University of Phonix, 2011).

The implementation of a security policy will protect the company from the major of

vulnerabilities that a company. The security methods that could be the most beneficial to the

Kudler Fine Foods would access control and risk assessment.
